Gujarat: Private Colleges to Hike Fees by up to 150% after Two Years from 2022-23

The Board of Governors, IIM Ahmedabad has sanctioned the proposal to raise fees by 7% fees for courses like PGP, FABM etc. According to a senior IIMA official, the management institute imposed a 7% fee hike after a gap of two years. The BoG has approved the fee hike for the courses as proposed.

The 7% increase will sum up to INR 23 lakh fee for PGP course for batch 2021-23 and INR 23 lakh fee for FABM. It was decided to have a fee hike considering inflation and in accordance with average hikes the institute has been adopting, the IIMA official revealed.

Similarly,IIT Gandhinagar has imposed 2% to up to 150% fee hike in various courses.

Commenting on the fee hike, Dean of Academic Affairs, IIT-GN, Kabeer Jasuja said that there has been no fee revision for the last three years, i.e, the fee was last revised in 2019-20. Thus, the revised fee structure will be applicable to new students joining from the academic session 2022-23.

He said that there will be an increase of 2% in fees for B.Tech or B.Sc programs, whereas PhD with institute fellowship will witness 5.61% fee increase. About 16.49% fee will be increased in regular IIT Gandhinagar courses like M.Tech, M.Sc and MA along with other PhD, M.Tech, M.Sc, MA and PGDIIT will see 40.88% fee hike.

The huge fee hike of 150%, from INR 10,000 last year to INR 25,000 this year, is in the continuation fee for sponsored PhD students, after their completion of residential requirement, he said.

He highlighted the fact that IIT Gandhinagar provides exceptional financial support and assistance to its students through various schemes and scholarships so that the students don't face any financial struggles during their learning journey.

Jasuja also stated an example that a sum of INR 2.5 crores was provided in the form of laptop grants, scholarships, tuition fees waivers, financial aid, loans, etc during FY 2020-21. This amount is in addition to the government-mandated financial support consisting of tuition fees waivers to B.Tech students and post-graduate fellowships.

Meanwhile, MICA Ahmedabad has decided to increase 8% fee from the new academic year for PGDM and PGDM-C courses. Vinit Shah, Head of Finance at MICA, said that the institute did not increase its fees in the past two years, but it waived off fees for certain sub-heads when the students were off-campus.

However, this year, the institute has increased the fees by 8% for courses namely, 2-year PGDM and PGDM-C, accounting for the inflationary increase and the rise in operating costs. The fee structure for the FY 2019, 2020, and 2021 was around INR 18.6 lakh as compared to INR 20.1 lakh for the new academic year, Shah said.

Speaking about the fee hike, Registrar of NID Ahmedabad, Rekha Nair said that there has been no change in the fee structure of NID for its programmes. Although an annual increase of 7% in the fee has been embedded into the fee structure for many years, this increase is only applicable to the new batches. The current batches of the students will not be affected by the annual increase.

A request to share NID’s comparative fee structure did not elicit any response. However, students who obtained admission in 2021, said the first semester fee was INR 1,49,650 in BDesign course and INR 1,74,180 for Master in Design. But from the academic year 2022-23, the first semester fee without the hostel facility was raised to INR 1,72,900 for BDes.

For Master in Design, the first semester fee will be INR 2,00,900 without the hostel facility. Hence, candidates seeking NID hostel facilities will have to pay INR 17,500 more.
