How is NIT Raipur for MCA?
I studied MCA at NIT Raipur, and completed my degree a few years back. Here are some pros and cons of joining this stream at NIT Raipur-
Pros-
- You’ll get an NIT tag.
- You’ll be offered a decent package, given that you stand eligible for the placements.
Cons-
- The faculty for MCA is underqualified. The teachers don’t solve the students’ doubts properly. If argued with, they might reduce your marks in the examinations.
- You can’t choose your elective paper in the 5th semester.
- The HOD and other faculty members aren’t cooperative or supportive towards their students.
- Although you’ll sit for placements with CS and IT engineering students, many companies don’t allow MCA students to apply. However, the same companies do pick MCA students from some of the other NITs.
- Sometimes when well-known brands visit the campus with placement offers, many MCA students are already busy with their internships.
- You’ll have to score 60% and above throughout your academic career. Failing to do so means you’ll most probably not be placed.
- Even if you stand eligible for placements, getting placed is still a challenge.
- The fee is higher in comparison to the educational and hostel facilities provided by this college for MCA students.
- B.Tech students are always prioritized and kept above MCA students, which is a bit unfair.
Thus, NIT Raipur isn’t the best place to pursue your MCA degree from.

NIT Raipur:
All necessary facilities are available on campus. The CS Faculty is well-qualified and cooperative. Teachers guide students regarding their career opportunities and placements.
Overall NIT, Hamirpur and NIT Raipur are really equally good Institutes for CS. Placement rate of the universities is almost 92%. So, choose an institute according to your convenience.
Is branch change option available in NIT Raipur?
Yes, NIT Raipur offers a branch change option after 2nd semester. The availability of the branch change option depends on the availability of vacant seats in a specific branch. You will need a CPI of 7.5+ to apply for branch change. You can enlist 10 choices of branches while applying. Once submitted, you can’t alter the choices.
Which is better, NIT Raipur or LNMIIT Jaipur?
If you are getting CSE at LNMIIT, go for it. Do not choose a branch just for the sake of the NIT tag. After completing the degree you may only have placement options in MNCs like TCS, Infosys, etc. I know many people from unknown branches of IIIT working in service companies. So, you get the idea.
- If you are one of the top students at LNMIIT Jaipur, you can easily secure a placement package of around 7-8 LPA.
- According to the recent industry trends, for securing good placement offers you need to be good at coding. And LNMIIT has a developed coding culture.

How is the hostel facility at NIT Raipur? How many students will stay in one room?
NIT Raipur has 5 boys' hostel and 3 girls hostel in all. The hostel facilities are great and every hostel has a huge dining hall with a mess, badminton court, garden, etc.
Boys Hostels
- The boys' hostels at NIT Raipur are named as A-Manipat, B-Chitrakot, D-Malhar, F-Kotumsar, and H-Sirpur
- The first-year students of B.Tech and B. Arch., are allotted the first 4 hostels and hostel H is for the second, third, and fourth year of B. Tech., B. Arch., MCA & M. Tech.
- The total capacity of these hostels is 1180.
Girls Hostels
- The girls' hostels are named as E-Mahanadi and G-Indrawati housing around 400 students. 403.
- For first-year students, 75% of seats are for BTech students, and the remaining 25% are allotted to students from the state quota (Chhattisgarh).

I am a student of NIT Raipur. Unlike before, the state of infrastructure and facilities has tremendously improved in my college. I don’t know much about IIIT Naya Raipur, but I can definitely enlighten you about the state of NIT Raipur-
- NIT Raipur has a good hostel infrastructure. There is a dual mess and lift facility within the hostels. The rooms are well furnished and spacious. Other than that, there are badminton courts and table tennis facilities.
- The campus has a huge canteen.
- The labs are well equipped with instruments and devices. This allows the students to work on advanced projects.
- As for placements, NIT Raipur was always in a good condition. Because of its NIT tag, good companies visit the campus during placement season. At present, CSE/IT branches see a very good placement record. From core branches, Mechanical, Electrical and ECE perform well. Mining also has a good placement record.
- There is a virtual classroom where video conferencing sessions, Skype interviews, etc. are conducted.
- The college has its own committees like- Cultural, Technical, E-Cell, Literary, Robotics, IEEE SB, SAE, Green Committee, Mentor-ship club, etc.
- The crowd of NIT Raipur consists of qualified students.
- The students from this college go for internships and projects in IITs and foreign Universities, like University of Nebraska. Its students also actively participate in many national level competitions, both technical and non technical. In the past, its students have secured good positions in Intel Embedded Challenge and Tata Crucible Quiz.
Thus, NIT Raipur has made tremendous improvements in every parameter. You can definitely consider this college for your engineering studies.
I am getting mining engineering in NIT Raipur. Should I take it or drop a year?
NIT Raipur started with the Mining, Metallurgy, and Mechanical branches. These branches are highly regarded in the institute.
- An acquaintance of mine who is an NIT Raipur alumnus advises against dropping out. Even after dropping out a year, some students sadly do not live up to the expectations they had set for themselves.
- The best option in NIT Raipur is arguably mining. Some of the students of NIT Raipur prepared for the JEE to appear for a second time and they were able to score big.
I do agree with my friend that it will be better if you pursue your studies along with the preparation for JEE Main. This way you will have a sense of security and a contingency plan if things don’t turn out as planned.
I am getting mining engineering in nit raipur. Should I take it or drop a year?
Mining, Metallurgy and Mechanical are the oldest and best branches at NIT Raipur.
I can understand how motivated you feel right now. At this phase of your life, you must be confident that a year’s preparation will land you in a better place. Surely, this can happen with dedication and hardwork. However, many students fall into depression and anxiety a few months after taking a drop year. This affects their performance which can lead to lower scores in the second attempt.
I suggest you take admission into the Mining branch of NIT Raipur and prepare for your JEE Mains side by side. This will require time management and discipline from your side. But you’ll always have your ongoing degree to fall back to, in case things don’t work out. Rest assured that the Mining branch at NIT Raipur is a good option.
