NIT Surathkal and NIT Calicut both are considered among the top NITs. According to the overall NIRF Ranking NIT Surathkal has been better than NIT Calicut. Having some friends studying in both these institutes, I can say that It totally depends on the aspect you are looking for.

Course Fee | 5.4 lakh | 5.48 lakh |
Highest CTC | 17 LPA | 14-16 LPA |
Average CTC | 9 LPA | 6-7 LPA |

In terms of education and placement students prefer to go to NIT Calicut and hence it would be the better option of the two.
According to some of my friends studying at NIT Calicut, the internet service there is very good. But there are also some things you have to keep in mind about the internet usage, before getting admission in NIT Calicut.
As for the restrictions, torrents are restricted through an Internet Firewall Company named Fortiguard which is an excellent Internet Firewall. Some students use tunneling to use NIT Calicut’s internal server named Athena which is much faster than the LAN connection. For login you need a username and password provided by a CSE student.
One of my friends had studied at NIT Calicut and here are some facts he shared about the college. These might answer your question.
It would be recommended to talk to the current student of this college, as they can give you a better picture of the current scenario.
NIT Calicut equally puts preference to most of the major festivals shared by different kinds of religion.
Whether it is Christmas, Onam, Id, Diwali, or other major festivals, NIT Calicut usually offers a one-day holiday to students. But, since the majority of students at the institute belong from the South Indian area, Onam is naturally the biggest festival. It is one of the major and biggest celebrations at NIT Calicut. Other than that, students also obtain holidays for the festival of Dussehra.
Apart from festivals, students usually get holidays by the end of their semesters, on national holidays, or on national emergencies, if any.
ECE has more job opportunities than Mechanical Engineering. After completing Mechanical Engineering, you will get jobs in PSUs, in government organizations.

Highest CTC | INR 37 LPA | INR. 43.17 LPA |
Therefore, both Mechanical at NIT Calicut and ECE at NIT Jamshedpur are good options. It all depends on which field you want to make your career. ECE will be the right choice if you want to be a part of the corporate sector after completing B.Tech or M.Tech.
Both the colleges are really good and come with their own tags. In one, you will have the NITian tag and the other will give you a BITS tag. In the end, you will have to make a choice between the branch and which one you like more.
If you are interested in coding and electronics, ECE will be a good fit for you. If you are good with fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and like hands-on work with machines, mechanical is another really good option.
With ECE, you will probably end up working in core firms that are IT-based. You should figure out what kind of life you are looking for and what field you want to study.
Mechanical/Electrical Engineering is superior to Production Engineering because Mechanical engineers can apply for jobs in the field of Production, whereas Production engineers cannot apply for core Mechanical jobs.
So, instead of selecting Production, I will recommend Mechanical /Electrical at NIT Durgapur in this case.
Here is a brief outline of NIT Durgapur.
Average CTC | 9 LPA |
Highest CTC | 33 LPA |
Major recruiters | TCS, IEM, Vedanta, TATA IQ, etc. |
Course fee | 5.56 lakhs |
Choose between Mechanical and Electrical based on your interests.

The department of CSE is crucially the most celebrated branch on campus, and if you are securing a seat, you should go for it.
In terms of the teaching quality, there are a few senior faculty at NIT Calicut, but the chances of getting those desired faculty are very less.
For placements, a number of core companies visit the campus. You will get decent job opportunities and roles. However, there are better NITs such as NIT Trichy and NITK Surathkal with much better placement statistics.
