Is MBA better than CA?

SM
Sushmita Mukherjee Posted On : October 29th, 2020
PGDM from SVKM's NMIMS (2016)

MBA is offered as a 2 year full time program MBA in India. It is one of the most popular postgraduate courses in India. Admission in MBA is based on the CAT, XAT, CMAT, Gmat, etc. exams. The entire Chartered Accountant course takes 5 years for completion. Students have to go through a CPT (Common Proficiency Test) which will lead to the inclusion in ICAT (Indian Chartered Accountants Institute).

The table given below shows a brief overview of both programs:

The top recruiting companies include Deloitte, Accenture, Infosys, Capgemini, Citibank, ITC, Nestle, Saint Gobain, JP Morgan, Wipro, Microsoft, Phillips, Reliance, L&T, McKinsey & Company, Avendus, Asian Paints, etc.

CA Recruiting Companies -

The top recruiting companies include JP Morgan, KPMG, Deloitte, E&Y, Federal Bank, Lodha & Co., IDFC Bank, Luthra & Luthra, Citibank, Edelweiss, Morgan Stanley, etc.

Admission:

  • Admission in MBA is based on the various entrance examinations like CAT, CMAT, SNAP, XAT, MAT and NMAT.
  • CA admissions is based on the Common Proficiency Test (CPT), Intermediate (Integrated Professional Competence) Examination and a Final Examination.

The amount invested in a CA is less compared to an MBA degree. Out of 100 only 3-5% of candidates are able to qualify with CA and get certified. 90-95% of candidates who opt for MBA courses end up getting good jobs with generous salary packages. So the demand of pursuing MBA is much higher in India than CA.

XLRI BM is the better option. It is an old B-School and ranks right after IIM A, B, and C. It has a large and varied alumni network. You will find XLRI alumni in almost every reputed companies.

XLRI BM has a smaller batch size. So, it’s easier for students to get decent job opportunities. XLRI placements are great. During the 2022 placement drive, the average CTC received by the students was INR 30 LPA.

How is the PGDM program at Calcutta Business School?

PS
Pravritti Shaha Posted On : April 6th, 2023
PGDM , Calcutta Business School (2016)

If you are considering pursuing a B-School program in Kolkata, there are some important factors to keep in mind before making a decision. Here are some things to consider:

  • Lack of Corporate HQs: Kolkata does not have many corporate headquarters, which means that only Sales and Marketing and KPO-type jobs are available. Regional offices have only Sales roles for most companies. This can severely limit the job opportunities available to B-School graduates in Kolkata.
  • Shortage of Faculty Talent: The best possible faculty for B-Schools are alumni of Top B-Schools with Corporate Experience. Unfortunately, there is a serious shortage of such talent in Kolkata in comparison with NCR, Bangalore, Mumbai, etc.
  • Limited Interaction with Corporates: Internships, live projects, and guest lectures are some of the ways in which B-School students interact with corporates. However, these opportunities may be limited in Kolkata due to the lack of corporate presence.

Based on these factors, if you are looking for the best B-Schools, it is advisable to consider colleges in Bangalore, NCR, or Mumbai. However, if you must stay in Kolkata, here are a couple of colleges you could consider:

  • IMI Kolkata: This college has good placement opportunities, but it is a bit expensive.
  • Globsyn: This college is also an option, but you may want to do more research to ensure it meets your specific needs.

Remember, it's important to do your own research and speak with current students or alumni to get a better understanding of what a particular B-School is like before making a decision.

Which would be a better choice for an MBA-IMI/VGSoM?

RS
Rajeev Sen Posted On : January 23rd, 2021
MBA, IIM Kolkata (2019)

There are some assumptions that help to select any business school. And they're valid for all top business schools at least the top 20. Go through these assumptions and see which B-Schools are closest to them.

The table given below shows a detailed overview of the institutes.

Particulars

IIT Kharagpur VGSoM

IMI

Median Salary

Rs 16.29 LPA

Rs 27.5 LPA

Entrance Criteria

CAT

CAT/GMAT

Fees

Rs. 10,82,000

Rs. 27,00,000

Deciding Factor:

  • Many Business schools today are student-driven businesses and it has nothing to do with anyone else. No other factors such as faculty, infrastructure, knowledge capital do not matter as much. If the infrastructure were the issue then FMS or JBIMS would have been a long way behind. Most of the reputed B-Schools are all about their students, clubs, events, committees, placement drives, etc.
  • Alumni is one of the most important factors to consider for choosing a B-School. That is why many management institutes like FMS, JBIMS, IMT- GZBD thrives.
  • What activity you are deciding on, in an enterprise college is categorized into clubs and committees, business college events (this one receives you plenty of prize cash too), academics (good academics and accurate CGPA offers better placements).
  • Rankings no longer matter much for the pinnacle 10–15 schools.
  • Placements depend a lot on alumni base and past history. For most business schools the percentage of companies coming back for placement is around 50%. It is all about reinventing the contacts and alumni are the best options for that.
  • You may hear a certain institute is better for Finance or Marketing. Which is not entirely true. Placement depends on hard work.

Go through the factors given above and choose the institute that fits these factors.
