Airforce Common Admission Test and Combined Defense Service Examination are written exams accompanied by an SSB Interview in order to pick appropriate young boys and girls for India's Defense Forces. Air Force General Admission Test is a test that is only taken for Airforce to select young boys and girls, while Combined Defense Service Examination is an examination designed to select candidates for all three wings, i.e. Army, Air Force, and Navy.
Given below are some of the major differences between CDS and AFCAT examinations.
Examination - Notifications:
AFCAT is carried out by the Indian Air Force, while CDSE is carried out twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission.
The AFCAT1 notification is released by the first week of December and is conducted in the last week of February, while the CDS 1 notification is released by the beginning of November and is conducted at the beginning of February.
Notification for AFCAT2 comes in the first week of June and the exam is conducted in the last week of August, whereas notification for CDS 2 comes in the last week of May, and the exam is conducted at the beginning of September.
Eligibility:
Both CDS and AFCAT requires an applicant to hold a bachelor’s degree(B.E/BA/B.Tech/B.Sc)
Age Limit:
The age limit for different wings at CDS and AFCAT is tabulated below.
AFCAT |
Age Limit |
CDS |
Age Limit |
Flying |
19-23 |
Army |
19-24 |
Technical |
18-28 |
Air Force |
19-23 |
Ground Duties |
20-23 for Graduates |
Navy |
19-22 |
Exam Pattern:
The AFCAT exam consists of a single paper that includes English, GA, mathematics, and reasoning, with a total of 100 questions which are to be completed within 2 hours.
The CDS exam consists of three papers English, GA, and Mathematics. For students opting for the OTA(Officer Training Academy), mathematics is optional. There are 120 questions in each paper and the time is 2 hours.
Level of Difficulty:
For each topic in both tests, the level of difficulty varies. The reasoning is considered to be the most difficult segment of AFCAT.
Results of AFCAT1 and AFCAT2 are declared by the end of March and September respectively, while the results of CDS1 and CDS2 are declared by June and January respectively. After the results are declared, students are scrutinized through SSB Round.

AIEED is conducted in two stages-
The entrance exam tests the students on their aesthetic sense and creativity. As it is for the Design college, it also takes into account the design sensitivity, logical reasoning and problem-solving aptitude of the students. Those students who qualify this exam have to go through a Portfolio Assessment and Personal Interview.
The exam is conducted in both online as well as offline mode. AIEED is scheduled to be conducted through the online mode in 2021. The eligibility criteria are different as per the different courses. All the students who have cleared their Class 12 from a recognised board are eligible to give AIEED. If the students want to apply for a UG programme in Interior Designing, the score of NATA, as well as AIEED, is considered.
It is actually the other way around. CDS and AFCAT have more advantages over NDA. Some of the advantages of NDA are as follows.
In NDA, Govt. pays for your graduation. So, your graduation is basically free. You become financially independent at a young age. You are also molded into the system early.
My cousin have qualified both exams and without a doubt, CDS is the toughest one. The reason being that the CDS paper is created by the UPSC, whereas AFCAT is prepared by the Indian Air Force. So you have to think a lot when attempting CDS questions, it tests your conceptual knowledge. AFCAT touches on basic topics and is much easier.
The following points must help you in a better understanding:
Here's a table reflecting the previous three-year cut-offs for AFCAT and CDS exams-
Exams |
2019 cut off |
2018 cut off |
2017 cut off |
AFCAT |
133-140 |
160-140 |
150-155 |
CDS |
95-128 |
NA |
120-260 |
Do not pre-suppose that clearing AFCAT with SSB will clear your path to the Indian Air Force, because apparently the final cut off is quite high, so if your AFCAT score is really high, between 140-180, only then will you be able get into the permanent commission.
However, if you clear the written and SSB in case of CDS, then you'll definitely join any of the forces and get into PC.
Study thoughtfully and try to prepare with determination and an open mind.
This is the question that after schooling or in between schooling student asks many times for the best coaching institute for IIT JEE in Bhubaneswar. It depends on the student either he or she want to do coaching in one place or subject-wise. But in my opinion, coaching at a single institute is good but it totally depends on the students.
I would suggest that Allen Career Institute is the best coaching institute because they have a unique process and have a good strategy of teaching the Aspirants of IIT JEE. The success rate of the institute is 99% which matters a lot. Not only the success rate but the majority of students who secure the rank below the 100 in the list for the JEE Mains and Advance exam are from this coaching institute. It has great efficiency in comparison with the other and also the success rate is very high.
So, in my opinion without any further delay if you really want to take admission in IIT Bhubaneswar you may join this coaching institute.
Both PSU and IES have their own advantages. Here is some insight regarding both these services.
Postings:
In IES, each department except railways gives posting in metro cities or tier 2 cities. But in PSU, there are high chances that you will get a rural posting. Due to obvious reasons, most plants are set up in rural areas. DMRC, POSOCO are the only exceptions. So, if you want to live in metro cities, you should prefer IES. But most PSU has good townships set up near their plants. These townships have decent facilities like gyms, pools, clubs, shopping malls, etc.
Compensation/Salary:
PSUs offer better salary packages. Most PSUs offer a basic pay of INR 60,000. You will also get various allowances like cafeteria allowance, uniform allowance, etc. The CTC offered at most PSU is around INR 17-18 LPA, while it’s around INR 11-12 LPA in IES.
Authority:
In terms of authority, IES wins. No PSU job will offer you the power and authorities an IES service offers. IES jobs also have better respect in society.
Lifestyle/Facilities:
IES posts have more responsibilities. In sectors like railways, you need to be available 24*7. In terms of facilities, PSU is better. Large PSUs have almost every big private hospital in their panel.
You should choose one of these two services according to your preference.
My cousin qualified for the AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) exam in 2018 into the AFSB which is an acronym for Air Force candidates. Basically, it is just the first step, including the CDSE which is the short form of the Combined Defence Service Exam. So these exams work as a filter in letting the best candidates come to the surface, these then go to the SSB/AFSB.
Here are some key points on the process-
If you wish to become an officer in the three defense forces, you'd have to submit a clearance by SSB or AFSB. If you're selected through the CDSE and NDA, then you'll be given the Permanent commission (PC) and if you have qualified AFCAT, then you'll get selected for Short Service Commission (SSC). Although, sometimes technical and non-technical staff go through the AFCAT only (not through CDSE) and they get through PC.
Note that if you fail PABT, your flying dreams are over, as far as IAF is concerned. So be careful there, you'll need a lot of patience and resilience to go through the process.
COMEDK is easier than JEE Mains, VITEEE, and MU OET. Based on the difficulty level, these examinations can be ranked as - JEE Mains>MU OET>VITEEE>COMEDK. Here is a video on everything you need to know about COMEDK
COMEDK is more scoring and easier to crack. If you read NCERT books thoroughly and solve last year's question papers, you can easily get a good rank.
One of my friends used to be a student of ACE Academy. According to her, the ACE Academy study materials are unbeatable for the preparation of competitive examinations like GATE or IES. Their test series is also very challenging.
Before joining ACE Academy, my friend was going through a period, when he didn’t use to concentrate on his studies. Similar to a period, which almost all engineering students go through during their BE/BTech. After joining ACE Academy, he had the opportunity to clear his concept in basics. He ended the course with good command of the subjects.

Lectures:
The lectures are quite helpful in preparing notes properly. Which are more helpful for preparation as compared to books.
Join the classes as early as possible. The course is also completed early. You will have plenty of time to self-study and revise for the examination. For GATE or IES coaching, ACE Academy will be best.
