Which will give me the exposure and on-site working experience: XLRI, HRM, or BM?

AM

One of my friends is studying at XLRI. To her, there is no difference or classification of the amount of international exposure or on-site opportunities, based on specializations. The points below provide a clear picture of the modes of international exposure that students of XLRI receive during their course and afterward.

  • There is a student exchange program in XLRI, which provides foreign learning opportunities to students.
  • The institute has tie-ups with several international business schools like ESADE, Audencia, Darden, and EM Lyon.
  • Almost 20% of students from the batch get the opportunity to spend a semester in one of the foreign institutes. Among them, most of the seats are available to HR and BM students.
  • Students get the benefit of interacting with international students and get used to the global perspective of MBA.
  • In terms of internships and placements, the working experience of candidates totally depends upon the job role offered by the company.
  • In certain cases, companies send their summer interns abroad to their offices.
  • There are HR interns from HUL, who worked in the United Kingdom during their internship period.

Therefore, specialization is not the mode of distinguishing chances for on-site opportunities, and the factor is entirely based on the company’s business requirements.

What can someone with 6 CGPA do to better his chances of getting into one of the top IIMs or top B-schools like XLRI Jamshedpur, FMS Delhi, IIFT?

Firstly, you should focus on getting a very good score on the entrance exam as it is something that demonstrates your innate intelligence, which is a good indicator of your potential to succeed in the program.

Secondly, you should focus on scoring well in the GD/Essay portion of the admission process. This demonstrates your intellectual capacity and knowledge, which can also be important qualities for success in an MBA.

Thirdly, you should focus on other points in your engineering experience that showcase your interests and abilities such as hobbies, sports, books, or other extracurricular activities that you are passionate about. Discussing these during the interview can help to showcase your personality and unique qualities.

Lastly, you should be very clear on why they want to pursue an MBA and why they want to attend that specific college. This demonstrates your clarity of thought and future career aspirations, which can be appreciated by the admission committee and compensates for the low CGPA.

What are my chances of getting into any of the old IIMs or XLRI with this profile: class 10 - 69.7%, class 12 - 83.8%, B.Com - 49.6%? I am a CA.

Sourav Gupta Posted On : May 28th, 2021
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (2019)

Your mentioned scores are very low and being a CA will only give you an advantage. IIMs give special preference to those who are CA or pursuing it. The main question is if you are eligible to write the CAT exam.

The criteria for writing CAT is to be a Graduate from a recognized University or a final year candidate in any discipline having a minimum of 50% marks. There are relaxations for those with a quota like SC/ST and they can have a minimum of 45% marks in graduation to write the CAT exam.

Not much weightage is given to academics at XLRI but they still need a minimum of 50% marks in UG. So, try to score well in XAT- anywhere from 95 to 96 percentile. This is because the higher you score the better chances you have. XLRI has no reservation policy and admission there is purely based on merit.

Among IIM Ranchi's PGD HRM and XAHR's MBA-HRM, which is a better programme?

RS
Rashmi Singh Posted On : January 12th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (2019)

Both programs have their own merits and demerits. Yet I am here to talk about XAHR’s MBA-HRM only. I will further list down some points in favor of my inclination toward this program particularly.

  • According to Eduniversal Best Masters Ranking Human Resources Management - Central Asia, XAHR holds the 5th position among the top B Schools within India specifically for this program.
  • Being one of the oldest Educational institutions in India, it has rich cultural values.
  • It just does not focus on academics but also on the extracurricular growth of its students.
  • The faculty is one of the most experienced ones, with both industry and teaching experience.
  • The comprehensive curriculum makes it possible for the students to experience the HR Conclaves, Leadership talks, and Outbound Leadership Program(TSAF).
  • The 3-month student exchange program is an excellent opportunity provided by the college.
  • Its early establishment has helped develop a strong alumni base which brings in many top companies for recruitment.
  • Excellent exposure is offered through Live Projects and Corporate Competitions.

All these features make the XAHR’s MBA-HRM program one of the most coveted courses in this field.

What is required to get into XLRI for BM?

SS
Shefali Sharma Posted On : June 14th, 2021
Studied at Xavier School of Management

I would be mentioning steps to follow if you want to get into XLRI for BM. So, here's how it goes:

  1. A good XAT score can do more than half of the job.
  2. Your solid communication skills actually prove to the panel that you are hard-working and will learn throughout the two years you would spend here.

Both of these steps is a pretty easy task to do and to achieve these skills, you do not require to do something extraordinary. Even if you have any coaching around your locality, perhaps consider joining it as they can provide you the guidance that is required.

Also, something which is more important and needs more emphasis are a few factors, which I feel you should introspection on are:

  1. Is BM going to help you in the long run of life? Is it actually going to help you achieve something and establish yourself?
  2. Why exclusively XLRI when it comes to BM?

The reason I mention these is that they are generally asked by the interviewers. I hope my answer has given you direction.

One of my very close friends studied GMP program at XLRI and here are some review points according to his experience which might give you a proper idea -

  • It involves building a career in Strategy/ Consulting.
  • You can directly get into a consulting firm but remember this happens often and not all the time.
  • It is a 2-phase preparation where you can build expertise in a particular domain and move to consulting roles.
  • At the end of the day, remember that "Consultant" is just a name given to a role. You may be creating a solution or devising a strategy under different roles.

Is SCMHRD HR programme as good as XLRI HRM in terms of brand value?

AS
Anshika Saxena Posted On : May 18th, 2023

No, the XLRI HRM program is one of the oldest and most respected HRM courses in Asia, which gives it a higher brand value than the SCMHRD HR program. However, going to a prestigious B-school is not the only factor that determines success as an HR professional. What matters is how good someone is at their work over the years. There are many well-respected HR heads from SCMHRD, and I've personally encountered multiple SCMHRD alumni who are brilliant.
