How does the CV of students who get selected in IIMs(any), ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJIMR, JBIMS look like?

AB

This might seem like a shallow statement but when you look at an average student from a top-tier college and an average student from a lower-tier college the difference that you witness would not surprise you if you just look at their CVs.

It’s not as if they have done something exceptionally great but the CVs of students who get selected in top management schools like top IIMs, ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJMR, and JBIMS are highly analytical. They know how to quantify their achievements and in the end, that’s all that matters. It’s all just numbers and data.

Typically, the students have impressive academic records and have been part of numerous non-academic avenues that have helped them in understanding the importance of extra-curriculum activities.

Some might have told you that most of the students who go to these top colleges have work experience but that is not true. You do not require work experience to get into your dream college. If you’re looking to get into one of these top management colleges and do not have an exceptional profile, just start focusing on your speed and accuracy for the written examination and polish your CV. Highlight the things that have impacted you and that you think would help you in becoming a better manager in the future.

What is the reputation of IIMs and XLRI outside India?

GS

If you are considering pursuing higher education, you may be wondering whether a degree from a foreign university is worth the investment. Here are some points to consider:

  • Indian vs Foreign degree: While having a degree from a prestigious Indian business school like IIM or XLRI can give you an edge in certain industries, it may not be enough to secure top positions in international organizations. For example, most top tech companies like Google and Microsoft have CEOs who are not from Indian business schools.
  • Prestige of foreign universities: Many foreign universities are well-known for their high-quality education, research opportunities, and global networks. Some of the most prestigious universities in the world are located in countries like the US, UK, and Australia.
  • Networking opportunities: Studying abroad can provide you with opportunities to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, which can help you build a global network of contacts. This can be especially beneficial if you are interested in pursuing an international career.
  • Career prospects: Having a degree from a foreign university can increase your chances of finding employment in certain industries or countries. Employers may be impressed by your international experience and language skills and may view you as a valuable asset to their organization.
  • Cultural exposure: Studying in a foreign country can expose you to new cultures, languages, and ways of thinking. This can help you develop a broader perspective and become more adaptable to change.

Ultimately, the decision to pursue a degree from a foreign university should depend on your personal goals and priorities. If you have the opportunity to study at a reputable foreign university, it may be worth considering the benefits and weighing them against the potential costs. However, if you are unable or unwilling to study abroad, there are still many great Indian business schools that can provide you with a high-quality education and excellent career prospects.

How can I get into XLRI with 8.0 GPA in 10th and 76% in 12th (MPC) and 6.5 in engineering? Will these marks affect my admission into XLRI or IIM even if I score well in XAT and CAT?

AC
Ashmita Chatterjee Posted On : June 29th, 2021
PGDM Human Resources, Xavier School of Management (2017)

This depends on the score in XAT and CAT. If you are aiming for IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore or IIM Calcutta, then a CAT score of close to or more than 99.8 percentile is needed for a general category student.

You may get a call from other new IIMs such as IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIM Lucknow, and IIM Shillong. As far as 2nd and 3rd generation IIMs are concerned, then a score of more than 96 percentile is enough to secure the interview call.

For XLRI Jamshedpur a XAT score of more than 98 percentile is enough to get a call for the interview process. The institute gives somewhere in the range of 10% - 15% weightage to 10th, 12th, and graduation marks.

Next is your performance in the WAT and PI which will determine your eventual admission.

XLRI and IIFT are both excellent. What matters is which one you are able to enter. Simply focus on each exam and consider it important, and you will be admitted. When you have a choice, you can make a decision. In terms of the alumni network, corporate connect, international collaboration, placement, PPOs, and offers, both Business Schools rank higher than many IIMs.

Honestly speaking, it might be very difficult to secure admission in the aforementioned B Schools with low academic scores. However, these are not the only B schools in India providing excellent Management education. These B Schools require a decent academic background with a good CAT score. The list is as follows

  • S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research
  • National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli
  • Lovely Professional University
  • Great Lakes Institute of Management
  • Vellore Institute of Technology
  • Nirma University
  • PSG College of Technology
  • Fore School of Management
  • SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies
  • Birla Institute of Management Technology
  • Banaras Hindu University

Please bear in mind that getting admission to any BSchool depends on your individual profiles and not on the policies of the institute.
