My brother had to appear for an online interview because he applied during the corona time. He joined Google Meet on time and began with his introductions. The interviewers asked him a number of questions like
Basically, he was bombarded with a lot of technical questions although they helped him a lot. From the interview experience, he arrived at the conclusion that to ace the interview one must have revised the notes he/she prepared while studying for GATE.
You will find both core and non-core opportunities in all departments at IIT Kanpur. Mostly Analytic roles are offered to students of all departments. These roles and packages depend on your own caliber and not on the branch you belong to.
Core roles are also offered to Mechanical Engineering students at IIT Kanpur. These roles are given on the basis of your academic performance and your knowledge base pertaining to the specific branch. But it’s important to know that core roles offered are very fewer in number than non-core jobs.
It’s recommended that you prepare for both. After all, some Analytics roles just evaluate you for your aptitude.
The written test for MS Mechanical has 3 major topics to choose from: Design; Thermal; and Manufacturing.
The section you chose has to be necessarily the same for both written and interview. There are a total of 12 questions in the written test - 10 questions from chosen section and 2 questions from Maths.
Every question carries equal marks (2 marks). Usually, 8 questions are numerical based while the rest 4 are theoretical. Numerical questions were based on engineering topics like SOM, Tom, and Mechanics while theoretical questions were highly conceptual. One has to answer around 8-9 questions to get shortlisted for the interview
Once the shortlisted candidates' list is released, you are required to go for document verification. You will be informed of your interview date as well. You might be asked to bring a copy of your first-year project along with you and will be asked questions related to it.
Once summoned, you will be asked to select 3 different projects out of 3 different specializations. (Thermal/design/manufacturing) for the MS course. You will be asked basic questions from the topic you have prepared beforehand and sometimes additional mathematics questions are also asked.
Overall, the interview is not as difficult as it seems and enough preparation will get you through.
NIT Silchar is a prestigious engineering college that imparts quality education in various fields. However, the PG courses aren't very well-known and only the UG courses have gained fame over time. It is therefore advisable to check the profiles of the teachers in the respective department.
Additionally, NIT Silchar is located in a remote location and you might find it difficult to procure your equipment for projects. MTech depends on the quality of the research and project you have completed and if you fail to accomplish it your MTech degree is invaluable.
Most companies visiting NIT Silchar prefer BTech students to MTech students. So getting a good job let alone a core job is very difficult here. The institute has no international ties so your future prospects may narrow down further.
Consider all the above factors before making your final decision!
Yes, IIT Delhi MTech Machine Design students do get placed with decent roles and packages. In fact, after IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi is the most preferred IIT for students mailing to get enrolled in the MTech program. The 2 main reasons for this are listed below:
MTech Program offered by the Mechanical Department of IIT Delhi has a decent placement scenario with a placement percentage of around 70-80%. Design stream has the best placements in the entire department in terms of the average package as well as placement percentage. Mainly roles in R&D and a few managerial roles are offered.
When considering a certain program, there are 2 things to choose from; the institute and the branch. So my answer talks about both, IIT Guwahati in general and MTech in Computational Mechanics.
IIT Guwahati
Computational Mechanics
This course is the perfect blend of Mechanics and programming. The key highlights pertaining to the course are
Overall staying and studying at IIT Guwahati will offer you a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will cherish for the coming years.
IIT Guwahati is visited by many reputed Indian and foreign firms both Indian and foreign from both private as well as public sectors. These companies know that they will find talented individuals at IIT Guwahati and thus despite the fall in the economy, they continue to visit it and offer decent packages.
IIT Guwahati has wrapped the first phase of the 2023 placement drive with 919 offers. 1269 students had opted for placements this year. IIT Guwahati's highest international package was recorded at INR 2.4 CPA whereas IIT Guwahati's highest domestic package stood at INR 1.2 CPA. Some of the top recruiters included Larsen & Toubro, Schlumberger, Piramal, TVS R&D, GAIL, etc.

IIT Guwahati's mechanical engineering department placement percentage stood at 74.73%. A few Public sector companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Nuclear Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL), etc, have also recruited candidates. Both the private and public sector companies are expected to recruit more candidates.
I have a few friends pursuing MTech Applied Mechanics from MNNIT Allahabad. According to their review, the Department of Applied Mechanics at MNNIT is known for its rigid and research-oriented teachers.
If you plan to complete a Ph.D. and further studies after M.tech then this course is a good option.

However, if you are opting for MTech just to prepare for BTech level competitive examinations, then it will be better not to choose this department.
MTech students do get placement offers in the on-campus placement drive. If you work hard and maintain good grades, you are likely to secure a placement offer. Many private companies visit the campus for placement drives. Securing a placement offer depends more on your effort.
My friend received a call in Cryogenic on the basis of her GATE score in the Instrumentation exam. The entire interview lasted for 12 minutes. The panelists initially cross-checked the GATE score with her and then began the interview.
They asked her where she hailed from and then posed a number of technical questions like
Based on her experience, the maximum questions were based on her research work only so you need to prepare well in the same.
In all engineering colleges, BTech students are given more preference than MTech students because they can do the job at a lesser salary than MTech students. Moreover, they are more in number and are ready to grab any role whatsoever. MTech students on the other hand prefer core jobs that align with their academic profile and specific interests. So the placement opportunities offered to Masters students are less. Mostly, they have two options to choose from, academia or corporate.
NITK offers a great research culture that instills all the necessary skills. The placements are unpredictable though. Ultimately I will advise you to opt for a Master’s degree only if you are really interested in getting a specialization degree because there is no guarantee you’ll get a job in the end.
