IIT Madras is consistently ranked at 1st position in the NIRF India Rankings 2023: Engineering, leaving behind even IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay. The Civil Engineering department at IITM is filled with numerous opportunities and the faculty, staff, and placements are without a doubt, top-notch.
The Centre For Innovation ( CFI) and IITM Research Park motivate students to come up with innovative ideas. Innovation is deeply encouraged and impressive ideas are helped with incubation and providing expert mentors. These are some startups specific to the Civil Engg. Department: Foldable Housing, Tvasta - 3D printing of buildings, Marvel Structural Consultants, etc.
Other than this, IIT Madras Civil Engineering Department has 14 well-equipped modernized labs. IIT Madras’s location in a city like Chennai makes it attractive for aspirants of various Government exams as well.
In all, IIT Madras is filled with opportunities and its Civil Engineering Department is highly renowned and offers numerous opportunities to the students.
I would recommend you choose IIT over NIT any day irrespective of the branch because it is recognized globally. The quality of packages and roles offered are also better and with the right motivation and determination, one can even change his branch to a better one.
At IIT Kanpur, I would advise you to go for Chemical rather than Civil. BTech Chemical Engineering combined with Masters in Petroleum Engineering is the highest paying bracket in the USA with more than 74000 Jobs available for outsiders in the Middle East, US, and Canada at a five yr median of $ 18600.
Additionally, at IIT Kanpur the ocean of electives to choose from enables you to pursue CS course side by side through certifications in 64/128/256 bit SSL Encryption, Data Structures, and Oracle which have great importance. While CS students can be found everywhere, you will find only a few Chemical Engineers.
Concludingly, it’s best to go for IIT Kanpur Chemical for the long term or IIT Kanpur Civil with a branch change to EEE or Mechanical in mind.
If you are considering pursuing engineering and wondering which branch to choose, there are some important things you should keep in mind while making a decision. Here are some key points to consider:
If you are still interested in pursuing Civil engineering despite the challenges, then you may want to consider NIT Warangal. According to the author of the original statement, this institution is better than NIT Surathkal. However, keep in mind that this is a subjective opinion and you should do your own research before making a decision.
If NIT Trichy is your only option, then you can go for it. But for Civil Engineering infrastructure can be a vital factor.
The budget that usually is allocated for infrastructure incorporates buying lands from peasants to fund the research later on with a low-cost housing or environmental impact assessment.
If you have chosen Civil Engineering, based on your electives, you could opt to specialize in Hydraulics engineering, Structural engineering, Environmental engineering, Building materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Construction Management, Infrastructural engineering, and other relevant disciplines.
It is best to get familiar with the topics briefly noted above. Based on your knowledge and expertise, choose one (or more, if required) of the many specializations and then do a brief research on the basic amenities, like faculty strength and similar aspects of NIT Trichy.
However, in terms of academics, NIT Trichy is an excellent choice.
NIT Calicut is good for Civil Engineering. The department has an experienced faculty base. The laboratories have the apparatus needed to perform exercises but the instruments are old and don’t work properly. But the lab sessions are very useful, you can learn a great deal by attending these, The Civil Engineering Association also provides good workshops often.
NIT Calicut placements are good for Civil Engineering. Around 75-80% of students get placed through the campus drive. The average CTC offered is around INR 8 LPA.
I am a B.Tech Civil student at IIT Roorkee. Here’s a comparison between the two options-
Parameters | IIT Roorkee Civil | IIT BHU Mechanical |
---|---|---|
Average Package | INR 18 LPA | INR 21.95 LPA (around 80% students get placed) |
Top Recruiters on campus | Larsen, Turbo, Tata, Sprinklr, Jio, L&T, Godrej, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Zepto, Google, Jaguar Land Rover. | Amazon, American Express, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Google, ITC Ltd., Microsoft, Oracle, Paytm, etc. |
Research Facilities | One of the best research facilities at the Civil Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee. | Ample research opportunities and well-equipped laboratories. |
One important thing that my friends told me is that the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT BHU is one of the strictest departments in India. It makes the students question their own potential. The department professors are very strict and the coursework is extremely rigorous. The students are given assignments and projects which they have to complete within a day.
I would suggest you choose IIT Roorkee Civil as it offers the same facilities and placements as IIT BHU Mechanical. Moreover, the Civil department at IITR is not as strict as the Mechanical department at IIT BHU.
Since you haven’t mentioned the branch you are interested in, I will assume you have no particular preference. Now, the primary factor to consider is if you value the brand of the college or the branch of your choice. Consider the following points
The best option would be to choose IIT Dhanbad CSE. It’s true that it won’t offer the opportunities and exposure that the top 5 IITs would but for me branch is more important than the brand name of the college. So, choose according to your preferences.
There is no such thing as placement strategy but talking of placements, very few students of the civil branch are interested in it.
India is a developing country and there is a huge requirement for Civil Engineers and will be in the coming future for Infrastructure development. So, it would be good, just stay focused on the core subject.
It would be advisable to choose the branch as per your interest first. And then if you figure out that you have an interest in civil engineering, you should go to Thapar. On the other hand, if you have an interest in computer science then you should go to Jaypee Noida.
Category | Civil Engineering at Thapar University | CSE at Jaypee Noida |
Total Fee | INR 66,000 | INR 2,62,750 |
Companies Visited | Wipro, Adobe, Samsung, Ambuja Cement, etc. | Adobe, Cisco, Amazon, Capgemini, etc. |
Highest Package | 24 LPA | 28 LPA |
Average Package | 8-10 LPA | 12 LPA |
Category | Civil Engineering at Thapar University | CSE at Jaypee Noida |
Total Fee | INR 66,000 | INR 2,62,750 |
Companies Visited | Wipro, Adobe, Samsung, Ambuja Cement, etc. | Adobe, Cisco, Amazon, Capgemini, etc. |
Highest Package | 24 LPA | 28 LPA |
Average Package | 8-10 LPA | 12 LPA |
Being a student of Jaypee myself, I can say that Thapar’s placement records are better, especially recently.
The table represents the branch-wise statistics of IIT BHU and IIT Roorkee 2023 Civil placements:
College | Placement Percentage | Median Package | Average Package | Highest Package |
---|---|---|---|---|
IIT BHU | 76.98% | INR 15.75 LPA | INR 19.09 LPA | INR 1.15 CPA |
IIT ROORKEE | 84% | - | - | INR 1.3 CPA |
Both IIT BHU and IIT Roorkee offer good placements to the students of Civil Engineering branch. The 2023 placement figures for both institutions are quite promising.
