Which is better, metallurgy at NIT Warangal or an MSc in Biology at BITS Goa?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : August 16th, 2023

Both Metallurgy at NIT Warangal and MSc in Biology at BITS Goa are great programs offering a plethora of opportunities and exposure to its students. But the choice between the two is a very personal matter as both the branches are very diverse in the opportunities they offer. So

  • Go for NIT Warangal if you are interested in Metallurgy
  • Go for BITS Goa if you are ready to Study Biology along with BE Degree.

However, you need to bear in mind the fact that BITS Goa is expensive and the fees is very high around 25 lakhs while NIT Warangal's total fees are less than 10 Lakhs.

Should I go for Metallurgy at NIT Raipur? How are the placements in the branch there?

DJ
Damini Jain Posted On : March 31st, 2021
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Raipur (2017)

NIT Raipur is a very good college and currently ranks at 67 in NIRF ranking among the top engineering institutes in India. And if you are a good student then maybe you can even get the CS branch as well.

Placements

  • Various companies visited on campus for placements. In addition, the faculty will also train you to clear the aptitude test and focus mainly on the orientation of the students.
  • The highest salary package offered was 7 lakh per year for metallurgy in software development, while the lowest was 4 lakh. So, on average, it went from 5 to 6 LPA, which is considered a decent package here in Raipur.
  • Infosys, Wipro, and Trendence are the top recruiting companies. A total of 5 to 6 out of 50 students are placed in reputed companies of India.

However, if you want to pursue M.Tech in a good college, study well and sit for GATE instead. The department of Metallurgy is famous at NIT Raipur and can help you in getting good scores.

Which is better: CSE in NIT, Durgapur or metallurgy in NIT, Warangal?

Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : September 8th, 2023

I would like you to consider certain important things before making your decision-

  • College- Without a doubt, NIT Warangal is ahead of NIT Durgapur in terms of faculty, infrastructure and hostel facilities.
  • Subject - You need to choose your subject based on your interests. Without that you’ll either hate your profession or choose a completely different career path altogether. If you are into math, coding, logic and problem-solving, choose CSE. On the other hand, if you want to study materials, metals, extraction, etc, choose Metallurgy.
  • Profession - CSE will give you better opportunities in the IT sector. You might get a fat check, work for a good company, and live in metropolitans. As you know, IT jobs are basically office jobs.On the other hand, core Metallurgy jobs deal with steel plants, mines and such. You’ll end up working in a remote area if you choose a core job.The placements for CSE are overall much better than Metallurgy, across all engineering colleges. But if you have a passion for metallurgy, you might end up in a good brand or get selected for a government position.
  • Location- Both the places are culturally very different. Research a bit, and figure out which place’s food habits, climate, and culture suits you better.

According to me your college will last for 4 years. However, your branch will become an intrinsic part of your personality and profession. Unless you have an interest in Metallurgy or a good chance at sliding to another branch, choose CSE at NIT Durgapur.

SG
Sheetal Gaur Posted On : September 19th, 2023
Studied at NIT Srinagar (2020)

To be honest, the placement for the same isn’t very appreciable in NIT Srinagar for metallurgical & materials engineering. However, there are students in the metallurgical department who are excelling, and NIT Srinagar is among the greatest universities in India.

  • Package statistics of 2022 are mentioned in the tabulated form

Highest Package

INR 12.80 LPA

Average Package

INR 7.52 LPA

Median Package

INR 7.00 LPA

So compared to this college IIT provides an offer up to 14LPA as an average package. These top-tier institutes offer 100 % placement opportunities whereas NIT Srinagar provides 65%–70% placement opportunities to their students.

What should I take, metallurgy and material science at IIT Indore or electrical at IIT Bhilai?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : June 17th, 2023

I think the branch matters more than the institute and that being said personally I feel IIT Bhilai Electrical is a better option than IIT Indore Material Science. The small batch size enables you to make the most out of the opportunities and resources. The points below further prove my opinion

Here is a small list of things why you should consider IIT Bhilai:

  • The professors come from IIT Hyderabad, one of the most reputed and well-regarded new IITs.
  • The fractal system is followed here giving you a more flexible academic palette.
  • The core subjects are introduced in the first semester itself so that students can identify their interests early.
  • IIT Bhilai EE lab is one of the very few labs in India which is Cloud Connected.
  • There are 20 All-in-ones that have 8-core i7 processors in the EE lab.
  • The institute has vibrant campus life with dynamic student activities going on such as 6 cultural clubs and 3 tech clubs.
  • The Electronics Club of IIT Bhilai Is well-equipped and enables you to experiment with various modules like GPS module, GPRS module, accelerometer, etc

Overall, taking IIT Bhilai will not disappoint you and you will have a plethora of opportunities here.

What are the placement prospects of a student pursuing a B.Tech in metallurgy and materials engineering in IIT Madras?

AB
Aarti Bora Posted On : March 30th, 2023
IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore

My friend graduated from IIT Madras a few months ago and was devastated by the placement scenario of her branch. It almost seems that only Electrical and Computer Science students were eligible for decent placements, rest all suffered.

Talking about Metallurgy specifically, he did not find a single core company visiting the campus for placements almost as if the branch was non-existent. He was told to maintain a good CGPA of 7-8+ for core roles but no core company visited.

In case you are looking for a high-paying non-core job, which is the case for most IITians, you will have to appear for several written and online exams not related to your specialization. You will have to make a good resume by including extra skills, developing your personality, and going the extra mile in your academics to achieve a high-paying job.

Concludingly, Metallurgy has little or no core job prospects so you will have to work hard to get non-core jobs.

What should I choose: IIT Roorkee metallurgy or NIT Warangal/Trichy CSE?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 6th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

IIT Roorkee, NIT Trichy, and NIT Warangal are well-established institutes in India. The scope of metallurgy is comparatively lower than that of CSE. IIT Roorkee mainly concentrates on textual learning and does not give the students exposure to practical learning. They are using the practice of mugging up the lessons without having a clear understanding of the topic. The placement is very poor here; the students from the metallurgy department usually end up in data analytics and coding.

So CSE at NIT Warangal and Trichy would be a better choice.

How is materials science & metallurgical engineering in MANIT Bhopal?

Sapna Malik updated Posted On : November 11th, 2023

Materials Science and Metallurgy is a good branch. It has huge career prospects in R&D. One can also opt for higher studies post a B.Tech in Metallurgy.

This branch deals with the science of materials. One gets to study the extraction of metals and their refining & purification. The Department of Metallurgy at MANIT Bhopal is quite good. It allows ample time to prepare for GATE. Upon cracking GATE, one can get a job in PSUs like Vizag, IOCL, SAIL, etc.

The department professors are good and supportive. They encourage the students to grab new opportunities in the field of Metallurgy. The placement figures for B.Tech Metallurgy aren’t as good as B.Tech CSE/ECE. The average package is 5–6 LPA, and the highest package touches 8–9 LPA. About 60–70% of the students receive campus placement.

Materials Science and Metallurgy is a good branch, given that one shows interest in it. It offers ample study time to prepare for competitive exams on the side.
