Yes, an MTech in Nanotechnology from IIT Roorkee is definitely a good option. Some benefits pertaining to this program are
The potential career prospects after completing this program include
Industrial: It’s honestly difficult for an MTech student to get core jobs mainly because companies prefer BTech students to MTech students. The only way is to become an expert in that particular field, such that no company is able to reject your resume. Complete as many internships as you can during vacations and gain maximum exposure. Attending conferences, and workshops helps with career growth. Depending on your performance, most companies consider you for their job roles. Some core Engineering companies that visit for placements are Punj Lloyd and L&T ECC.
Corporate: Every engineering branch is open to non-core placements, especially from the corporate sector. Some major consulting companies that visit the campus for placements are TCE Consulting Engineers LtdZinnov Research & Consulting among many others.
Research: For those who are interested in research work, the option for Ph.D. after MTech is always open. growth in the funded projects initiated by the government. Many central and private universities have research centers offering M.Tech in different specializations. The extensive research work will help you become proficient in that field making Ph.D. a good option. Some R & D companies include BARC and ISRO.
Teaching: Entering academia is also an option after completing the MTech program. But it is advisable for such teachers to continue their research work and keep broadening their knowledge base for the benefit of their students. Adopting an updated teaching methodology is also crucial.
There are many career prospects for MTech students from Industrial and corporate to teaching and research work. You just need to hone your skills well and keep a positive attitude.
The choice of subjects for doing an MTech depends on your inclinations and also your engineering background. In my opinion, the best bet would be Microelectronics or digital electronics and communication.
Additionally, there is a branch called the School of Information Science (SOIS) that offers a degree equivalent to an MTech degree which is MS. Its course is at or with industrial trends. The overall curriculum focuses more on lab work than theoretical knowledge. The courses offered here are embedded systems and VLSI digital electronics.
In all, MS offers a better hands-on experience but MTech is a better choice if you want to pursue teaching.
The better option depends on what your purpose and life goals are and what you want from your Master.
If you want to pursue a career in research (PhD) the best option for you is IIT Guwahati. Being one of the oldest and most highly reputed IITs, it has high credibility and will fetch you Ph.D. interviews much more easily. Additionally, IIT Guwahati also offers immense exposure through foreign exchange programs. IIT Guwahati has collaborations with various reputed universities and can be preferred over NITs.
However, if it's the jobs you are after, then NIT is a better option as it’s more accessible to employers. Still, IIT Guwahati will always be my first preference. Be it a job or higher education, IITs always give an edge to other engineering institutes.
MTech placements for the ECE branch at IIT Kharagpur depend a lot on your specialization.
Those under VLSI and VIPES get placed with great packages and there are almost cent percent placements for them. VLSI students are usually offered core jobs in contrast to VIPES which offers both core and non-core jobs. There are a lot of software profiles offered to VIPES students.
Communication also has decent placements but not the same certainty as VLSI. Here companies like Qualcomm come for placements and some even are offered software profilers
