Studying at IIT Dharwad is like running a startup.
At IIT Dharwad, you’ll be responsible for setting up the college culture. You’ll form new clubs and societies and learn teamwork. At the same time, you’ll get to enjoy a lot of freedom. You’ll learn ways to find sponsors for your respective club, and to make budgets for important college events. You’ll learn to manage things on your own, with minimum guidance from seniors.
This experience of being part of a developing institution is extremely unique. Even the old IITs can’t offer such learnings.
Why are IIT Dharwad placements not good?
As per the 2023 placement data available till now, B.Tech CSE and EE have performed decently. But B.Tech Mechanical lags behind.

The placements at IIT Dharwad are decent, and not bad at all. It is important to consider that it is a 3rd gen IIT, established very recently. So it will take some time to show the same results as 2nd and 1st gen IITs, and top NITs.
What is special about IIT Dharwad?
IIT Dharwad is located in Karnataka, which is home to a flourishing IT sector in Bangalore. Dharwad is well connected to Mumbai, Bangalore, and other major South Indian cities.
The faculty members of IIT Dharwad have completed their education from well-reputed colleges including MIT, IITs, IISc and NUS. Most of them have prior industry experience. All this adds value to the quality of education at this college.
The permanent campus is already up and functioning, and was inaugurated by Hon. Prime Minister himself. IIT Dharwad offers numerous UG courses for students to choose from. These are- Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, Civil and Infrastructure Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences (5 years Dual Degree).

Which one is better , IIT Dharwad or IIT Tirupati, for CSE?
IIT Tirupati was started in 2015, and IIT Dharwad in 2016. As a student of CSE at IIT Dharwad, I can give you some details on my branch/college-
The CSE branch at IIT Dharwad receives internship offers from well-known companies like McAfee, Microsoft, Google, and some well reputed academic institutes. The CSE students qualify for GSoC in decent numbers, and the Open Student Society of IIT Dharwad conducts an Open Source Contribution Event during the summers. It is called ‘Summer of Innovation’, and it receives participants from across India, including the OS society of IIT Kharagpur. Dharwad is well-connected to major IT hubs- Pune, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad. IIT Dharwad is backed by a huge incubation center based in Hubli called Sandbox Startups.
Based on my experience, I can assure you a rich learning environment at the IIT Dharwad CSE department.
Does the IIT Dharwad have clubs and IIT culture?
The student community of IIT Dharwad runs many clubs. Our college has actively functioning Technical, Cultural and Sports Clubs. Plus, the Career Development Cell helps students develop their overall personality and career prospects.
IIT Dharwad is very new, and as its students, we are continuously trying to build a rich campus life despite our busy academic schedule. The campus culture is not at par with old IITs right now. But being members of a new college allows us to take part in its development, and to learn new things during this process.
Here are some clubs at our college-
- Technical Clubs- Hardly Human (AI-related), Space Data Science Club, Robotics Club, Coding Club, Finance Club, Astronomy Club.
- Cultural Clubs- Literary Club, Fine arts club, Dramatics Club, Photography Club, Dance Club, Music Club, Quiz Club.
- Sports Clubs- Athletic Club, Badminton Club, Basketball Club, Chess Club, Cricket Club, Football Club, Table Tennis Club, Tennis Club, Volleyball Club, Weight Lifting Club, E-Sports Club, Yoga Club.
The Technical Council conducts the Summer of Innovation, and it has really good projects and activities.
IIT Dharwad offers plenty of academic and extracurricular exposure, despite being a 3rd gen IIT.
Which is better, NITK CSE or IIT Dharwad CSE?
Even though IIT Dharwad is very new, it has certain advantages over NITK.
IIT Dharwad carries the prestigious ‘IIT’ tag which benefits it in many ways. The government allocates a separate, bigger budget for the IITs. IIT Dharwad is under the mentorship of IIT Bombay, so it receives highly experienced teachers from the IITB CSE department.
Moreover, the CSE curriculum of IIT Dharwad is the same as that of IIT Bombay. While formulating its curriculum, the authorities took suggestions from the students. This made the syllabus student friendly. IIT Dharwad has recently shifted to its permanent campus, and it offers good extracurriculars for the students.
NITK is a prestigious college with very high rankings. But even if you end up with IIT Dharwad, you can make the most of it.
What should I prefer between BITS Hyderabad and the new IITs like Dharwad, Tirupati?
Branch should be your first preference, and not the college.
If you are getting CS at BITS Hyderabad, then choose it over 3rd gen. IITs. This will be a safer bet for now. But BITS Hyderabad is an expensive option.
For core branches and dual degrees, 3rd gen. IITs are a better choice than BITS Hyderabad. You can’t be sure of scoring high grades in college, so don’t leave your branch selection in the hands of destiny. That is why choosing IITs is better if you want to opt for a dual degree.
I am a B.Tech CS student at IIT Dharwad, and frankly speaking, even CS from 3rd gen IITs is not a bad option. By the time you graduate from your college, it would’ve made considerable progress.
Why is there so little information on IIT Dharwad?
IIT Dharwad started functioning from 2016, and is one of the 3rd gen. IITs. Because it is very new, not much information is available about it online.
It recently shifted to its permanent campus, and is continuously making progress in infrastructure and academics. The mess food may not be to the liking of North Indian students because it caters to the South Indian taste palette. The highlight is the teaching faculty which consists of best teachers from IIT Bombay.
IIT Dharwad is continuously progressing, and will hopefully make its place among renowned engineering colleges in the future.
How is mechanical engineering at IIT Dharwad?
Mechanical Engineering studies are good at IIT Dharwad. The academics of IIT Dharwad has always been great, experienced faculty members from IIT Bombay taught courses to its students since the beginning of this college
As for Mechanical specifically-
- The Mechanical faculty consists of professors from IIT Bombay, and other highly skilled academicians.
- The curriculum is the same as that of IIT Bombay Mechanical.
- The department has separate labs for different courses. The lab equipment is either new or from the IIT Bombay labs.
- Prof. Prabhu of the Mechanical Department is a highly respected faculty member at IIT Bombay. He is very hardworking and learned. He has over 2000 citations.
- The peers of Mechanical are very friendly and cooperative.
IIT Dharwad Mechanical will give you ample exposure and good academics, despite being a new institution.
