Is mathematics and computing branch is similar to CSE in IIT Delhi?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 10th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Mathematics and Computing (M&C) is a branch offered at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and is quite similar to the CSE branch in the sense that both focus on the study of computer science and technology. However, it’s important to note that M&C is more inclined towards mathematics and its applications in computing, while CSE focuses more on the engineering aspects of computer science.

Both branches offer similar courses in programming, algorithms, data structures, and software development, but M&C additionally covers math-oriented topics like Differential Equations, Number Theory, Linear Optimization, Algebra, Calculus, etc.

There are a number of courses like Discrete Mathematical Structures taught at both departments but separately by professors of the respective departments.

Both branches are the most coveted branches and all companies opening job profiles for one branch offer the same to the other branch because of the similar nature of the branches.

What should I know before going to NIT Patna for CSE?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : August 31st, 2023

I would like to congratulate you for getting into NIT Patna for your CSE. The first-year curriculum isn’t difficult and you can easily score a good CGPA.

The tips I’m going to share below will really help you, given that you religiously follow them-

  1. Before joining, revise these topics from 11th and 12th- Calculus, Algebra, Matrices, Trigonometry, Physical and Organic Chemistry, Physics (Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Modern Physics), and English (Grammar and Written Composition).
  2. Before the start of classes, start learning C language. It is the syllabus of sem-1.
  3. Download GeeksforGeeks to learn coding. You’ll get help with algorithms, data structures, and interview preparation.
  4. As you continue learning the C language, start problem-solving on Hackerrank. This is an online platform to practice coding.
  5. You’ll be taught Java in semester 2. Learn it on your own in advance and solve related problems on Hackerrank.
  6. After a while, you can switch to Codechef, which is another coding platform.
  7. After the mid-semester of second semester, learn data structures and algorithms. Compete in online hackathons.
  8. After the second semester, start learning either Web Development or Android Development. During the semester break, apply for internships on platforms like Internshala.

I hope that you have a great time at NIT Patna and make lifelong memories on campus.

What should I prefer: Mechanical Engineering at HBTI, Kanpur or CSE at IET, Lucknow?

AL
Ajay Lakhra Posted On : August 9th, 2021
Studied at Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow

Both of the institutions are situated at a distance of 80 km from each other. IET Lucknow is situated in the industrial capital of Uttar Pradesh and the HBTI Kanpur is situated in the Political capital. If you live in one of the two cities, you can choose accordingly; otherwise, this factor has no significance.

  1. According to AKTU, both the institutes are ranked at number 1 and number 2 in UP, but the situation is completely different analytically. HBTI is a well-known institution and has been the parent institute of IIT Kanpur and Uttar Pradesh Textile Institute.
  2. Both the institutes are government-run with complete control over examinations and the curriculum of courses offered by them.
  3. If you enjoy programming, Computer Science would be the appropriate course for you, while Mechanical Engineering is for those who want to acquire a genuine sense of what engineering is all about.
  4. The faculty of IET Lucknow is better than that of HBTI.
  5. You will have numerous opportunities outside the campus. The placement statistics for the mechanical department are not very good at both institutes, but placement in the CS department is extremely good.

Make your decision based on the branch and not the institution as it would have a major impact on your career.

Can I get CSE at Thapar University with 127 marks in the Mains, general outside Punjab?

AR
Adarsh Roy Posted On : August 7th, 2023
Studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

Yes, you can get CSE at Thapar University easily even if you don’t hail from Punjab. The reason is even with low marks students can get some other branch and then appear for the December Test to upgrade their branch to CSE. You need to be among the top 20 students to upgrade your branch to CSE.  Another option is to make sure you have a 9.7 CGPA or higher in the first year. This will increase your chances of upgrading your branch to CSE.

The subjects taught in the first to students of all branches are the same so you won’t lag behind in your branch. Also, the pattern and syllabus of the December test are exactly like JEE Mains so you don’t have to worry about preparing for it separately.

Hope this helped you!

How good is the electronics and Instrumentation branch in NIT Silchar? What do you recommend between CSE at TEZU and E&I at NIT Silchar?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : October 18th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Frankly speaking, both Electronics and Instrumentation and CSE are equally good branches that open up ample opportunities in the future. Let us have a brief comparison of the NIT Silchar, E&I, and TEZU.

Infrastructure – TEZU is leading in terms of the best infrastructure and well-equipped lab facilities, especially in the CSE branch.

Faculty – TEZU is gifted with more highly qualified and experienced faculties than others.

Placement – NITs and TEZU have had a good record of placement in recent years.

Research – CSE has an active and advanced research environment at TEZU.

Other than the qualities of the institute, your initial preference should be given to your interest in the core subject.

Which is better: IIIT-Delhi CSE or DTU CSE?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : October 9th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

I had the same choice in front of me a few years back. As a student of DTU, I can present before you some pros of choosing it over IIIT Delhi for CSE. These are-

  1. DTU will provide you with ample time to explore your interests. These can be anything- coding, dancing, music, sports, drama, etc.
  2. You’ll have less academic pressure. With one to two hours of routine self-study, you can score good grades.
  3. You’ll have more time and energy for GATE, CAT, or GRE preparation.
  4. You’ll get excellent peers and a large and lush green campus. The campus is spread across 164 acres.
  5. DTU has great fests. These are- Engifest (cultural), Aahvaan (sports), Yuvaan (Literary), and Invictus (Technical). You’ll also enjoy DJ nights at the campus.
  6. It has a strong alumni network and brand value.

However, the CSE curriculum at IIIT Delhi is more up-to-date. Also, as DTU has a huge number of students for CSE, the competition is high.

Despite these cons, I believe DTU CSE is a better choice. But your decision should be based on your personal preferences.

Which one is better for CSE: Jaypee Institute of Information Technology or NIT Hamirpur?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : September 14th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

There are several factors which one can consider while comparing two institutions. Here are some things that I considered while choosing my college.

NIT Hamirpur will offer you the prestigious ‘NIT’ tag. As compared to other colleges in this region, the environment over there is superior. By environment I mean the learning, interaction and personal development offered at an institution. The placements are continuously improving with new companies visiting the campus each year, offering better packages. This college has shown positive growth in terms of exposure and student- teacher interaction as well.

Even though I’m a student of NIT Hamirpur, my opinion is devoid of such biases. Thus, according to me, NIT Hamirpur is a better choice for your CSE program.

Should I prefer civil engineering in IIT Hyderabad or CSE in RVCE?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : May 9th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

My suggestion would be to opt for IIT Hyderabad Civil Engineering and prepare for a branch change.

IITs cannot be compared to any private college other than BITS. Even if you are unable to change your branch, don’t feel disheartened as the IIT Brand name is more than enough.

I know many people who were part of the Chemical, Biotech, and Civil Engineering branches of IIT and are earning more than 12 LPA currently. Irrespective of the branch you belong to, IITs offer an excellent coding culture making you proficient in the same. The quality of peer groups you will be interacting with is also better at IITs than at private colleges like RVCE.

All in all, IIT as a brand is better than RVCE and other private colleges except BITS.

Which is the better choice for a CSE, ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT Gandhinagar?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : June 16th, 2023

The aforementioned IITs have witnessed exponential growth over the past few years and are good options for engineering. You will have to consider your personal preferences to make the right decision. All the IITs mentioned have progressed well. You need to look over various factors while making a choice. Also, I will like to add IIT Patna and IIT Ropar as they also have been doing quite well.

  • On the basis of the cutoff, IIT Gandhinagar is the winner after which comes IIT Ropar.
  • All the new IITs except IIT Ropar have managed to shift to their newly constructed permanent campus out of which IIT Gandhinagar seems to have the most beautiful campus.
  • IIT Gandhinagar CSE has been established not very long ago and lacks the credibility yet. However, since IIT Gandhinagar functions under IIT Bombay, it will soon give promising results with a rich coding culture.
  • Sparing IIT Gandhinagar, the CSE placements of all new IITs is visibly good.
  • ISM is a new IIT but an old institute and thus has better cultural clubs and events than the newly established IITs.

In my opinion, IIT Gandhinagar should be your first choice among the new IITs followed by IIT Patna.
