How are placements in Thapar?

RD
Raashi Dey Posted On : August 8th, 2023
Studied at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (2019)

The placements in Thapar University are better than almost all the NITs, barring the top 4 or 5 NITs. Like the usual trend, CSE placements are the best in Thapar. For other branches, placements at Thapar and all the other Engineering colleges have suffered immensely in the past few years. This is because the PSUs formed a large chunk of recruiters for core engineering branches like Civil, Mechanical, etc, and they are now recruiting via GATE. This is a setback for Thapar University and other Engineering Colleges.

For the CSE branch, placements are really good. Even the Mechanical branch has good placements. It is a top branch at Thapar University. EIE comes third in terms of placements. The placements for Electrical and ECE are not so good. But ECE, Electrical, and the other remaining branches get plenty of offers from IT companies that are mass recruiters and offer non-core jobs to all the branches.

Choose Thapar University if money is not a concern for you as it has decent placements. However, if there are financial constraints, even an average NIT is not a bad option.

Which is better, NIT Jalandhar or Thapar University?

MA
Madhav Aneja Posted On : August 18th, 2023
Lived in Chandigarh, India

Anyone who has the chance to get admission to Thapar University should definitely prefer it to NIT Jalandhar. It’s one of the best private engineering colleges in India. However, Indians have many false notions regarding it just because of its high fees. In reality, Thapar University fees and BITS Pilani fees are more or less the same.

There are false rumors circulating regarding the Thapar University admission process and many claim that it’s not transparent and there are a lot of conspiracies involved. However, it’s just like any other private university, only better than others.

Thapar University's curriculum and faculty are excellent. So I will advise you to choose it unless you get the top 7–8 IITs, top 5 NITs, and BITS Pilani.

Should I Join Thapar University (CSE) or take a drop to study CSE (B Tech) at IIT or BITS Pilani ?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : June 27th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

My brother completed his CSE at Thapar University. He was also planning to take a drop initially. But after doing a lot of research and consulting others, he decided to go to Thapar University. It is a prestigious and well-reputed institution.

My brother felt he couldn’t handle the pressure of entrances and preparation any longer. Besides, the placements at Thapar University are at par with other top institutions like PEC and ISM Dhanbad. Even the education system and reputation of Thapar University are good.

According to my brother, if you have the courage and determination, you can take a drop and try for the IITs or BITS Pilani. But as far as Thapar University is concerned, it has a good infrastructure, good facilities, and amazing seniors. It is better than most NITs (barring a few) and also has a strong alumni network. Therefore, you won’t regret joining Thapar University for your CSE.

How is Thapar University for a B.Tech?

AS
Anwita Sen Posted On : August 9th, 2021
B.E. Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2020)

My sister used to be a student of Thapar University so I think I can give you some information regarding the institute.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the TU.

Pros-

  • The infrastructure is really good. You will get Wi-Fi at around 4Mbps, Sports facilities are good, and the accommodation is really good.
  • There are a lot of research opportunities that you can pursue without a lot of questions.
  • You will have to attend college only 5 days a week. You get off for 2 days and you can travel around a city.
  • Patiala is a nice city. It has all the basic amenities.
  • There are a lot of cultural events and societies you can be a part of. The campus is really good.
  • The placements are really good. According to the recent statistics, the highest package offered was 28.5 LPA.

Cons-

  • There are teachers who are fresher in the field of teaching and lack the skills required.
  • There are a lot of cultural activities, but the students raise the money only by the exterior motive of making money.
  • There are societies like Student Alumni Interaction Cell (SAIC), with biased selection criteria.
  • There is the 75% attendance criterion.
  • There is a 50% Punjab quota. You might see people with half your JEE marks in the same branch as you are.

Apart from this, the placement report of the college is good. Just keep your pace and give your best in your studies.

What is the passing criteria in Thapar (complete)?

JG
Janki Gupta Posted On : August 7th, 2023
Studied at Thapar University (2019)

There are a number of criteria that Thapar University students need to fulfill in order to pass. A few of them have been listed below

  • Students have to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance including tutorials, lectures, and labs. Students who don’t fulfill this criterion face detention and have to repeat the course next semester.
  • Students have to score 33 marks after combining tutorials, practicals, quizzes, and semester exams. However, they will still pass the subject if they score less than 33% at the End of semester or any other exam.
  • Students scoring between 33 and 27 in one subject, and more than 33 in others, get a D grade without repeating the course.
  • Students scoring between 33 and 30 in two subjects, and more than 33 in others, get D grades in both subjects
  • Students who fail to fulfill the above 2 criteria get an E grade in a subject and can appear for an exam, the marks of which are substituted as END SEM marks. If your marks become more than 33, then you get a D grade in the subject,
  • If a student fails to secure more than 33 even after this exam,  then they have to repeat the subject in the next semester and they will be getting a D grade on passing the subject.

Hope this helped you!

Is a CSE degree from Thapar University worth spending 25 lakhs?

KH
Kaushik Halder Posted On : August 10th, 2021
Mechanical Engineering from Thapar University (2019)

A CSE degree from Thapar University doesn’t cost 25 lakhs. I have a friend from the institute who will soon graduate from the institute. He paid approximately 12 lakhs for four years. Hostel fees are not included. Even with annual increases and hostel fees, it will never reach 25 lakhs.

  • CSE from Thapar is worthwhile because they have excellent placements and a welcoming environment. According to the 2020 placement highlights, more than 264 companies visited the placement drive and the highest CTC offered was 43 LPA.
  • Also, there are a number of societies in Thapar where you can learn a variety of non-technical skills such as dance, singing, economics (ECON Club), event management, marketing, and design and various events take place throughout the year. This contributes to an individual's overall development.
  • Apart from what is included in the syllabus, there are societies that cater to technical learning such as CCS, Microsoft Student Chapter (for CS students, anyone with an interest is welcome to join), IEEE, IETE (for ECE students), and many more for all branches.

All these factors make Thapar a good option for pursuing a CSE degree.

What does a new student joining the hostel at Thapar University need to bring?

Sayantani Barman Posted On : February 21st, 2024

You’ll get most of the required items at Kabir General Store in COS. But you can still bring along these things, especially if you have spare ones at home-

  1. A mattress, pillow and bed sheet(s).
  2. A bucket, mug and soap container.
  3. A door lock. You’ll especially require one if you have been allotted a single room in Hostel J.
  4. A table fan/mini cooler.
  5. A mosquito repellent, eg. Good Night.
  6. Some hangers for your clothes.

These are the things you can bring to the Thapar University hostel as a fresher.

Should I go for CSE or COE at Thapar Patiala?

SS
Shubh Sharma Posted On : August 5th, 2021
Studied at Delhi University (2019)

A few of my friends graduated from Thapar University and here’s what they have to say about it.

While discussing both the branches, they consider COE to be better than CSE because of several reasons. These include:

  • COE is the oldest branch at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.
  • COE being a bit experienced has better placement records than CSE.
  • COE also has a strong alumni network.
  • The subjects of COE are related to both software and hardware. Thus, students will learn about programming languages too.

If we see CSE it is a new branch started this year only and has no placement records. Also, little or no hardware knowledge is given to CSE students as compared to COE.
