AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : September 4th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

One of my cousins was in a similar dilemma when she got selected for both Civil at NIT Jamshedpur and CSE at IIIT Ranchi. S he decided to go for NIT Jamshedpur as she had no interest in the IT sector at all. S he wanted a core branch and NIT Jamshedpur seemed to be her best choice. Moreover, its Civil branch placements are considered to be at par with the top NITs. In your case too, it's best to focus on your interests and future prospects to make a healthy decision. If you have even a slight interest in the IT sector, choose IIIT Ranchi because its CSE is way better than NIT Jamshedpur CSE.

Here is a brief overview of both the institutes'

Particulars

NIT Jamshedpur

IIIT Ranchi

Fees

INR 1.88 Lakhs (BTech 1st Year Fees)

INR 2.14 Lakhs (BTech 1st Year Fees)

How is civil engineering at CUSAT?

US
Usha Saini Posted On : February 11th, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology (2017)

CUSAT is considered to be a good place for Civil Engineering, considering the academic and exposure provided by the institute. Following are a few stats regarding the Civil Engineering department of CUSAT.

NIRF ’20 Rank

178

Total Fees (B.Tech)

3.5 Lakhs

Median Salary offered (Civil)

4.5 LPA

Cut-off rank (Civil)

2313

Some key highlights about the department are listed below:

  • Faculty: The faculties in Civil Engineering are quite experienced and provide quality learning.
  • Extracurricular Activities: A lot of exposure in extracurricular activities is provided by CUSAT, which is a major recreational mode and helps in cultural growth too.
  • Curriculum: The syllabus followed by CUSAT is quite good and well-framed. It is considered to be tougher than other universities, but not very difficult to grasp if the genuine effort is provided.
  • All B.Tech programs in the School of Engineering (SoE) are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for two years under the Tier-I system. This makes it evident that the degree certificate has got a lot of weightage in itself.
  • The campus life in CUSAT is worth enjoying, along with academics and curriculum.
  • The placement of Civil Engineering in almost all institutes across India is not worth considering. But, it is expected for companies to give preference to CUSAT graduates in their recruitment drives.

Overall, Civil Engineering at CUSAT is a good choice for interested students.

Which is better, go for IIEST Shibpur for civil or drop a year for an MBBS?

BG
Bhumi Goswami Posted On : April 12th, 2021
Studies at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2018)

One of my friends was in the same situation last year. He got IIEST Shibpur Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Civil Engineering along with a rank of 1383 in West Bengal State Merit List of NEET for MBBS admission converted with a mark of 462.

  • In West Bengal State counseling he received R Ahmed Dental College in the 3rd round.
  • He refused the seat in KPC Medical College as he knew that his parents will not be able to pay his fees of 8 lakhs over 4.5 years. As he was not interested in Civil so he continued with Metallurgy and Materials Engineering.
  • During his 1st semester, he again started preparing for NEET but figured out later that the course pressure at IIEST Shibpur is too much and with so much to study for NEET, he was just falling apart.
  • His CGPA was not good as it was only 8.67 and ultimately decided not to go for NEET as his father advised him to concentrate on IIEST and give up on his dreams of becoming a doctor.
  • It came as a shock but later he realized that preparing for NEET all over again alongside maintaining a proper CGPA at IIEST is doing more harm than good to his career.
  • He felt that he should have taken the drop in the beginning but he was not ready to take any risk and IIEST Shibpur being a renowned college he was not ready to leave it.

So, if you want to become a doctor and serve people and if it's the long-cherished dream of pursuing MBBS then you should leave IIEST and better prepare for NEET again. Different people will have different views regarding the decision of leaving a good college like IIEST but in the end, it completely depends upon your goals.

Does NIT Surathkal have a good placement record for civil engineers?

PR
Pooja Rani Posted On : April 21st, 2021
B.E Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (1966)

There is very little demand for civil engineers here in the Indian markets. Unfortunately, not many skilled civil engineers are output from any Indian engineering college.

  • The curriculum of all engineering colleges hasn’t been updated for over a decade and it is not at all in sync with the current needs and requirements of the civil industry.
  • Most of the civil engineers who pass out from the reputed colleges across India are either offered computer programming jobs with a package of 5-10 LPA on an average or become managers in the industry.
  • The reality of civil engineering in India is quite a sad sight to look at and the students are paying with their twisted career choices for it.

There is no doubt to the fact that NIT Surathkal is an impressive institute with reputed faculty guiding the students, with an exception for the branch of civil engineering. Either the students are not able to develop sufficient interest in the same or the curriculum is not such that invokes interest or keeps them motivated enough. Moreover, it is also not in accordance with the industrial standards and needs.

If anyone gets selected for civil engineering in CUSAT, does he get to study in SOE or the CUSAT main campus itself?

SJ
Suyash Jain Posted On : February 19th, 2021
Studied Civil Engineering at Cochin University, 2019

CUSAT is a university that had colleges under it in the past. Now it only has colleges or schools to be exact. Which are under the main university campus.

Following are the various schools affiliated with CUSAT University.

  • SOE: It stands for School of Engineering and deals with UG engineering courses.
  • Old SOE: It deals with Grad and Ph.D. courses. It also comprises various departments for MCA.
  • SLS: It stands for School of Legal Studies and deals with the law courses.
  • SMS: It stands for School of Management Studies and deals with business-related courses.
  • Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering: It deals with marine engineering courses.

The above-mentioned schools constitute the main campus. This is not the entire CUSAT, there is another campus for the university.

Lakeside Campus:

  • The Lakeside campus is around 12 km from the main campus. It is set in Cochin city on the estuarine waterfront.
  • It consists of the School of Ocean Science and Technology, School of Industrial Fisheries, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Chemical Oceanography, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Department of Physical Oceanography.
  • The School of Marine Sciences has a library that is regarded as one of the largest marine science libraries in Asia and a research vessel for coastal water studies.
  • The school has academic interactions with other universities and research institutes in India and abroad.

Apart from this, there is also CUCEK in Kuttanad, also known as the Pulincunnoo campus. So, if you get selected into civil engineering, then you will be studying in SOE which is inside the main campus.

Which is better, Kanpur civil or IIT BHU electrical?

A
Admin Posted On : June 12th, 2024

Both IIT BHU and IIT Kanpur are one of the best and oldest institutes in India. But according to me IIT Kanpur is better than IIT BHU here are some reasons:

  • IIT Kanpur generally ranks higher than IIT BHU in the NIRF rankings. As of the most recent rankings IIT Kanpur is usually within the top 5 engineering institutes in India and IIT BHU typically ranks between 10 to 15.
  • Both IIT Kanpur and IIT BHU have excellent placement records. Electrical Engineering at IIT BHU has placement records with an average CTC is 18 lakh whereas Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur also has strong placement statistics with an average CTC is 22 lakh.
  • When it comes to research education and course curriculum IIT Kanpur is better than IIT BHU.

Considering the above points I could say go for IIT Kanpur over IIT BHU. Although, it depends on personal choice.

SB
Shruti Bonnerjea Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) (2018)

Yes, IIT Bhubaneswar is worth it to pursue civil engineering. Although it is a new name among IITs, it’s doing quite well. According to NIRF Ranking 2019 IIT Bhubaneswar was ranked at 26 among the engineering colleges all over India. It’s a popular belief that there is not much placement opportunity available for civil engineering students in India. And most of the students from this starts to prepare for non-core placements from the very beginning of their courses. But this is not the case for IIT Bhubaneswar. Past placement records suggest that 70% of the civil engineering students got core placements. Placement record for 2019 in IIT Bhubaneswar shows a total of 89% students from civil engineering got placement offers. During placement, the average salary package offered to civil engineering students is 10 LPA. The highest salary package offered even went up to 39 LPA over the years.

Students of this IIT have opportunities to do their internships in R & D organizations and in many foreign Universities. For summer internship program, students of IIT Bhubaneswar visited organizations such as ABB Ltd, Amazon, Microsoft, Aditya Birla Group, Airbus Group, India HINDALCO Industry, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Bharat Dynamics Ltd, NTPC, PNB, Metlife, Wipro, BSNL, Jaipur Metro, BHEL, Vizag Steel Plant (RINL), DRDO, Mahindra & Mahindra, Jindal Stainless Steel.

So, yes, civil engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar is worth it as it will provide you with good placement and internship opportunities.
