How are the placements at IIEST, Shibpur?
As a B.Tech Mechanical student at IIEST Shibpur, I can tell you about the placements in my branch.
Several companies recruit mechanical students from IIEST. Here is a list of them-
- Core Companies- CESC, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto, Tata power, Saint Gobain, MN Dastur, Hindustan Unilever, Vedanta Limited, Hyundai, DCPL, WSP, VikramSolar, TEGA Industries, Tata projects, Elegant Marine, Denso Haryana, Haldia Petrochemicals, Aditya Birla, Eleation, Tata bluScope, JSL, JSW, Britannia, Wood group, Daimler, Tata Steel, etc.
- Consultancy firms- PwC, ZS, Capgemini, Zycus, etc.
- Mass Recruiters- TCS, CGI, Nissan Digital, Infosys, Cognizant, Compro tech, Silfra tech, HCL, Aakash Institute, etc.
61 out of 75 eligible students from B.Tech ME were placed last year. As an ME student, you can’t expect a 7 figure salary through campus placements. Only a handful of companies offer 8 LPA or above. Mass recruiters offer less than 4 LPA.
The placements are decent for my branch at IIEST Shibpur. You can consult some seniors to know about the placements in other branches.
Does IIEST Shibpur provide a good placement for M.Tech?
No, it is more or less the same as a bachelor's. Not just at IIEST Shibpur, the scenario of placements for Masters is more or less the same at every institute in India.
If you pursuing Masters then you should keep your aim straight to get a Company related to your branch or pursuing higher studies (Ph.D.) for the teaching line. B.Tech level hiring is more or less the same in M.Tech at the institute. There are some departments in M.Tech which have a moderate placement. The other departments do not offer good placement opportunities. But at IIEST Shibpur you will get the best learning opportunities.
At last, it is up to you only which field you are choosing. If you want a job then go for it with for B.Tech degree, If you want a purely technical job then go for a master's and if you want an academic line then go for further higher studies i.e. Ph.D. from abroad.
Does IIEST Shibpur provide good placement for M.Tech?
As a former Civil student at IIEST, my answer especially concerns my branch.
Before pursuing an M.Tech, you must keep your aim straight. It should either be to work in a design company, or opt for a Phd. This is because B.Tech is a much better degree if your aim is to get placed with a good package.
The placements for B.Tech are much better than M.Tech, at IIEST Shibpur. Some M.Tech departments offer decent placements, while others aren’t even average in this respect. But the teaching is really good for all departments.
My answer isn’t very particular, but I tried to give you a general idea of the placement scenario for M.Tech at IIEST.
How can I reach IIEST Shibpur from Sealdah Railway Station?
There are several means of transportation from Sealdah Railway Station, Kolkata to IIEST Shibpur campus, located in Howrah. All transportation modes are available from the bus stop near Big Bazaar, which is just 2 minutes walking from Sealdah Railway Station.
The following points below state the possible and easily accessible modes of transport.
- There is a direct, white-colored bus, named “Beleghata –B garden”. There are buses every half an hour, which start at Beleghata, which is close to Sealdah and goes till B-garden. The route of this bus is through Vidyasagar Bridge, or commonly known as the second Hoogly bridge. It will drop you just in front of IIEST Shibpur.
- There is another option by breaking bus routes. People can take any bus towards Howrah, from Sealdah. From Howrah, there are several buses that go to college ghat. After reaching college ghat, it is just a two-minute walk to the IIEST campus.
- Other than the above two, there is the easiest option, which is taking a direct cab to IIEST Shibpur. It may cost around Rs. 200, depending upon cab surges.
These are the options to reach the IIEST campus located in Shibpur, Howrah, from Sealdah Railway Station.
Which is better, IIEST Shibpur or NIT Patna?
This is a pretty difficult question as both the colleges are great in their own ways. National Institute of Technology (Patna) is ranked 134th in India among the leading technical institutes of India by NIRF. Whereas, IIEST Shibpur is ranked 19th among engineering colleges by NIRF. Let's compare some of the parameters which may help you choose which institute will be better for you.
Admission-
Both the institute offer UG, PG, and Ph.D. programs across various streams.

IIEST Shibpur witnessed a placement record of 311 students for the academic year of 2018-2019. The highest recruiting batch was Information Technology. 39.2 LPA was the highest salary offered in the 2019 placement drive.

Whereas, NIT Patna placed 279 students from the streams of B. Tech, M. Tech, B. Arch. The highest salary offered was INR 39.12 LPA and the average salary was record around INR 7.71 LPA in the 2019 placement.
Both IIEST Shibpur and NIT Patna are equally good. So choose an institute among the two according to your convenience.
What improvements are needed to make IIEST, Shibpur, a premier one which excels overall?
Here are some improvement ideas that can help IIEST Shibpur excel better.
- It should work on offering better infrastructure, learning resources, laboratory facilities, and faculty similar to that of old IITs and IISc.
- IIEST should collaborate with leading technical institutes from India and abroad.
- Work on developing a better industry reach to provide students with better exposure and networking opportunities.
- The institute needs an effective marketing strategy to make people aware of academic and research activities happening on campus.
- Promote technical events and programs such as GSoC.
- Support and encourage entrepreneurship. Improve placements.
These are the major aspects IIEST needs to work on for further growth.
Is IIEST Shibpur a good institute? Is it better than NIT Jalandhar, NIT Durgapur/NIT and Silchar/IIITM Gwalior?
Without second thoughts, IIEST is better than all the colleges you mentioned. The institutes that are better than IIEST are the top 7 IITs, BITS Pilani, IISc.

If IIEST is worthy of comparison to any of the colleges you have mentioned then it is NIT Jalandhar. The academic excellence is very similar. But other colleges don’t even stand in the race to compare.
Is IIEST Shibpur better than NIT Trichy?
IIEST Shibpur might have the edge over NIT Trichy in terms of research. However, the same cannot be said with certainty in terms of academics. In case of academics, NIT Trichy may be ahead of IIEST Shibpur.
In terms of placements, NIT Trichy is way ahead of IIEST Shibpur. It also gets the upper hand in case of the students. As the research in NIT Trichy is superior compared to IIEST Shibpur, the faculty of the former is also superior to the latter.
However, IIEST Shibpur is often ranked in magazines like Outlook, Mint, EduRand owing to its research and other collaborations. BESU, even being a state government institute, was facing problems in its funding. After its conversion to IIEST, things took a turn for the better. It is the second oldest institute for engineering in the country and the alumni are also pretty renowned. In terms of infrastructure as well, NIT Trichy has the upper hand over IIEST Shibpur.
Is IIEST Shibpur better than NITs like Jaipur, Allahabad, Delhi, etc.? Does this institute come in par with NITs?
