How will the written test and interview for a Ph.D. in electrical engineering be in IIT Hyderabad?

SY

My friend had the opportunity to appear for the written test and interview at IIT Hyderabad for Ph.D. this year in July for the Communication and Signal Processing Electrical Engineering department. There were 2 tests conducted out of which the first comprised 6 questions. 5 questions were based on probability and random processes while the other one was on signal and systems. The test lasted for 2 hours. The questions asked in this fest were quite difficult and tested functions of one and two random variables.

For the second test, a transfer junction was provided and 9 questions were asked related to it. The entire test lasted for an hour. The questions in the test were comparatively easier than those of the first. The only challenge was to complete the lengthy questions in a short duration of 1 hour.

Out of the 60 applicants that appeared with my friend, only 8 were shortlisted for the interview.

Overall, the professors were very supportive and helped students wherever necessary. The duration of the interview is around 20 minutes.

Which college is better- NIT Warangal, IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad, CBIT or BITS Hyderabad?

SB
Sachin Beriwal Posted On : May 16th, 2023

Let’s do a comprehensive comparison of IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad, and NIT Warangal (as my knowledge is limited to these 3 only)

IIT Hyderabad

  • It has a great learning environment and students are very focused on academics and research. The fractal system is a cherry on top.
  • The faculty is dedicated and very young, some of them aged less than 40.
  • The system of fractal academics imparts a diverse learning experience as students are allowed to choose a course of their choice taught by their favorite professor. You can take courses in liberal arts like painting, learning foreign languages, pottery, etc.
  • The course structure is flexible and one can do a minor or even a second major in other departments.
  • Being close to the metropolitan city, Hyderabad, IIT Hyderabad attracts the best recruiters and faculty.

NIT Warangal

  • It’s one of the first RECs established and is a highly esteemed institute with experienced faculty and notable alumni.
  • Many professors lack a systematic course plan and are unable to complete the course in time. Some of them aren’t approachable and students are unable to get their queries solved.
  • A lot of on-campus politics goes on at NIT Warangal.
  • You get the opportunity to join NCC as well. There is a big outdoor stadium, gym and facilities for sports.
  • The student body committee is very powerful and you can even protest openly against the director.

IIIT Hyderabad: It’s considered a good option for computer science students.

BITS Hyderabad: It is also a decent institute with students enjoying good opportunities and freedom.

CBIT: It is one of the best private institutes in AP and Telangana. However, it cannot be compared to NIT Warangal or others, as the exposure and opportunities of NIT are way better.

In my opinion, the ultimate preference order should be,

IIT Hyderabad> IIIT H>=BITs H>= NIT W>CBIT

Should I prefer civil engineering in IIT Hyderabad or CSE in RVCE?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : May 9th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

My suggestion would be to opt for IIT Hyderabad Civil Engineering and prepare for a branch change.

IITs cannot be compared to any private college other than BITS. Even if you are unable to change your branch, don’t feel disheartened as the IIT Brand name is more than enough.

I know many people who were part of the Chemical, Biotech, and Civil Engineering branches of IIT and are earning more than 12 LPA currently. Irrespective of the branch you belong to, IITs offer an excellent coding culture making you proficient in the same. The quality of peer groups you will be interacting with is also better at IITs than at private colleges like RVCE.

All in all, IIT as a brand is better than RVCE and other private colleges except BITS.

IIT Hyderabad is one of the best new IITs and is growing by leaps and bounds. With its fast-paced development, it’s expected to reach the level of old IITs. IIT Guwahati, although it is older than IIT Hyderabad but became an IIT much later than IIT Hyderabad. The reasons for its increasing demand among top recruiters

  • Major capital or investments are done hence it is a hub of companies.
  • IIT Hyderabad has collaborations with the Japanese University, University of Tokyo and that’s exactly why it’s the best new IIT.
  • The major highlight is the Internship opportunity of going to Japan for a year or two in research

How is the ranking for new IITs for Mtech CSE, IIT Patna, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Ropar, IIT Bhubaneswar, Indore, Jodhpur, and Mandi (in terms of placement, coding and academic workload)

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : June 20th, 2023

Based on placements, coding culture, and academic environment here is how I will rank the second-generation IITs

  • IIT Hyderabad takes the first place because of its location in the IT hub of India. The preferable location attracts many reputed firms like Goldman Sachs, NVIDIA, JP Morgan, INTEL, Qualcomm, and Microsoft.
  • IIT Gandhinagar comes second again because of its location and the type of recruiters it attracts. It might not have companies like Qualcomm, INTEL, or JP Morgan Chase but other big shots like Nutanix, Microsoft, GS visit the campus frequently. Even IIT Indore and IIT Bhubaneswar are ranked second as they are similar.
  • Both IIT Jodhpur and IIT Ropar are equal in rankings and are placed 3rd in this list because of their location. These colleges provide excellent opportunities for CS students who are at par with IITs like Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Indore, and Bhubaneswar.
  • I would rank IIT Mandi the last because of its poor location. The college has zero connectivity and no big companies care to visit for placements. IIT Mandi is a good option for those who want to study in a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Overall, most IITs are similar, and thus distance from home should be the major criterion to be considered.

What is the quality of accommodation and mess food at IIT Hyderabad?

SG
Sachin Gupta Posted On : May 16th, 2023

No matter what delicacies you are offered in the hostel mess, nothing can be compared to home-cooked meals. So, it's better to lower your standards when it comes to mess food served at IIT Hyderabad. If you find the mess food unsatisfactory you can always go to canteens and get yourself your favorite food. You will be glad to know that food is sold at subsidized prices at these canteens.

IIT Hyderabad has decent accommodation facilities and all permanent students are made to stay on the permanent campus while interns and other temporary students will have to stay on the temporary campus (Ordnance Factory) The commute between the accommodation and the main campus might be tiring given the weather conditions and the huge distance.

How is the placement scenario in IIT Hyderabad for an M.Tech in the CSP branch?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : May 15th, 2023

IIT Hyderabad is one of the fastest-growing new IITs that has almost reached the level of older IITs in no time. Its location of being in one of the biggest industrial cities of India plays a big role in its fast-paced development. My sister was a student of the CSP branch (MTech RA) and enlightened me about the placement scenario there. However, she passed out in 2016 so the placement stats are for that year only.

The CSP department of IIT Hyderabad has extremely learned and experienced faculty with a decent placement scenario even better than VLSI.

  • In 2015-16, CSP recorded 80% placement with an average salary above INR 10 LPA.
  • In the 2016–17 placement session, CSP boasted of 100% placement with the average CTC standing at INR 12 LPA. Some students even received more than one offer.

Considering the improved trend, the placement scenario of CSP at IIT Hyderabad is currently expected to be even better.
