Firstly, The admission process is not founded on your percentile; it mostly depends on your final rank. The rank will vary every year according to the number of students who attended the examination. With this percentile, you can secure a seat in either Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering at NIT Silchar.

B.Tech CSE from NIT Silchar is a good choice. Here are some parameters to assess it-

  • Coursework - The CSE coursework at NIT Silchar is relevant and up-to-date. But the teachers won’t guide you much. You will have to rely on online courses and videos. During your first year, you’ll have just one CS subject which will cover C language and the basic fundamentals of C++. During the 4th year, you will have specialization courses like Data Mining, Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Image Processing, Machine Learning, Speech Processing, Wireless Networks, Cryptography and Cloud Computing.
  • Facilities- NIT Silchar campus has high speed internet facilities. In the CSE department, you will have 24-hour lab access with assigned PCs to work on. There is a SuperComputing Center as well. It can be used during your projects when you will need high processing speeds. The NITS coding club is very active. The CSE department has its own society which is called the Computer Science Society. It organizes workshops, seminars, and offers regular updates on the latest developments in the field of Computer Science.
  • Placements- The placement scenario at NITS is quite good for CSE students. Top companies visit the campus with tech and other job offers. The major recruiters for CSE department include- Microsoft, Samsung, Amazon, DE Shaw & Co, Infosys, Deloitte, and ITC Limited among others.

Thus, you can definitely consider NIT Silchar for your B.Tech CSE course.

Why is NIT Silchar devoid of the repo that other NIT's get?

SG
Sudipta Ghose Posted On : August 25th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology Silchar (2020)

There are a number of reasons why NIT Silchar does not enjoy a good reputation like other NITs. The remote location and poor connectivity seem to be the major factors contributing to the poor reputation. Other major reasons are

  • Low Cutoffs: The institute has very low cutoffs and thus the quality of students admitted is also average. For BTech CSE Home State the cutoff is 21683 while for Other States it is 10645.
  • Alumni network: The alumni network is the backbone of any college that guides the current students and also speaks of the college's worth. NIT Silchar has no such alumni network and there is no connection between alumni and students. Moreover, successful alumni working in MNCs don't prefer giving credit to NIT Silchar for their achievements and attribute it to their graduate school.
  • Infrastructure: Another reason for its bad reputation is the poor infrastructure and lack of good quality journal publications from students or professors.
  • Recruiters:  Usually, PSUs visit the campus for placements as NIT Silchar is not famous among the private ones.

All the above factors combined have resulted in a poor reputation of NIT Silchar in comparison to other NITs.

How do you think NIT Silchar can compensate for its location and appear more mainstream?

SB
Silvia Basu Posted On : August 25th, 2023
Studied at NIT Silchar (2019)

One of the major challenges NIT Silchar faces is its remote location. This has led to many issues such as fewer companies visiting during placements, no industrial visits until the institute pays for the airfare, lack of projects and construction materials, and long travel hours for students. Here are a few solutions I have come up with that might solve this issue to a certain level

  • Speeding up the process of Broad-Gauging the Guwahati-Silchar railway line: The deadline for the completion of this project has long passed and it is still under construction. Because of this students have to opt for the costly road travel from Guwahati-Silchar.
  • Speeding up the process of making a 4-lane road between Guwahati-Silchar: Construction for this has started recently and earlier the journey from Guwahati-Silchar used to take about 13 hours. Now it has been reduced to about 9-10 hours and the duration is only expected to reduce.
  • Become a part of the institute once you have been admitted instead of criticizing it. Acceptance does wonders.
  • The management has to be ready to fight this disadvantage with every possible resource.
  • NIT Silchar should build a robust marketing structure. It can capture every ongoing campus activity and post articles, pictures, and videos. All the visiting dignitaries should be treated with utmost care and respect. Excellent content should be updated on the institute's social media handle
  • NIT Silchar has video conferencing facilities and this can be utilized to the fullest to organize guest lectures, deliver courses, conduct placement drives, etc.

I hope these solutions can be implemented as soon as possible to improve the situation at NIT Silchar.

Should I join mechanical at NIT Silchar or CSE at IIIT Guwahati?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 25th, 2023

One of my friends was in a similar situation and with her rank she got NIT Silchar Mechanical. However, she changed her mind at the last moment when she heard of the poor placement scenario of NIT Silchar. Sbe enrolled for the special round and luckily made it to IIIT Guwahati. She took the risk of choosing a new institution only because its placement scenario seemed more promising and the curriculum was well-updated.

IIIT Guwahati also has an excellent research culture since the faculty comprises professors who are Ph.D. holders from renowned IITS. Students get the chance to work on projects under their excellent guidance. The resources are limited but their excellent course makes up for it. The courses in the 2nd semester are very interesting like data structures, calculus, differential equations, Computer architecture, etc

Unless you have a specific interest in Mechanical go for IIIT Guwahati.

How good is the electronics and Instrumentation branch in NIT Silchar? What do you recommend between CSE at TEZU and E&I at NIT Silchar?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : October 18th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Frankly speaking, both Electronics and Instrumentation and CSE are equally good branches that open up ample opportunities in the future. Let us have a brief comparison of the NIT Silchar, E&I, and TEZU.

Infrastructure – TEZU is leading in terms of the best infrastructure and well-equipped lab facilities, especially in the CSE branch.

Faculty – TEZU is gifted with more highly qualified and experienced faculties than others.

Placement – NITs and TEZU have had a good record of placement in recent years.

Research – CSE has an active and advanced research environment at TEZU.

Other than the qualities of the institute, your initial preference should be given to your interest in the core subject.
