How good is IIT Delhi Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation)?

DS
Dipti Sinha Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2022)

IIT Delhi’s Electrical Engineering department has a number of branches like

  • Communication Engineering (Communications Group, Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi)
  • Control and Automation (Control & Automation)
  • Computer Technology (Computer Technology)
  • Integrated Electronics Circuits (Integrated Electronics and Circuits)
  • Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives (Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, and Drives)
  • Power Systems

This allows Electrical Engineering students to choose from a wide range of topics and they don’t have to restrict their area of interest. However, to provide core electrical engineering education and research opportunities, there is a separate Electrical specialization in Power and Automation.

Owing to the small batch size and top-notch lab facilities, IIT Delhi’s Electrical department is highly coveted and is funded by Industry donations and partnerships. The performance rate of the students of this department has been increasing over the past few years and these students continue to perform well in each batch.

However, it is important to note that academic rigor is high in this department and requires a high level of commitment. But your efforts don’t go wasted because of the excellent packages offered to the students of this branch.

I have rated the program based on some aspects to give a better idea.

  • Global recognition: Top 0.1%
  • Scholastic Aptitude: Top 0.1%
  • Work Ethics: Top 0.1%
  • Placement assistance: Top 0.1%
  • Program Support: Top notch
  • Infrastructure: Top notch
  • Faculty: Top 0.1%
  • Research output: Not among the Top 50 global programs

Do your part of the research and talk to people who have completed this program and then make the final decision.

IIT Delhi is a leading Institute offering education in subjects of engineering and has been maintaining a good rank over the past few years. It is ranked second by NIRF, one the most considered ranking bodies. Last year the placement percentage was recorded to be 82% and this year's placements are still going on.

Given the reputation and quality of education it offers, it definitely has a great placement scenario as well. This year, IIT Delhi's highest package was around INR 4 CPA offered by Jane Street. More than 50 students were offered packages around INR 1 CPA. The top recruiting sectors were IT/Software, Finance, Core Engineering, Technology and Analytics .

Some highly talented CS students receive offers worth more than 1 crore from US companies like Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter.

What were the questions that were asked in the IIT Delhi M.Tech interview for Computer Science and Engineering?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

My friend recently gave his interview for the MTech program at IIT Delhi and he told me that only 2 questions were asked him.

  • What is a tree? - To this, my friend gave a general answer that did not satisfy them, after which they asked him to state an additional property of the tree. Right after this, they tricked him by asking him to prove the 2nd property based on the first. Although he tried, he was unable to give the final solution.
  • Next, they chose a number between 0 to infinity and asked him to guess their number exactly using the minimum number of queries. My friend could answer this one better than the first one although the panelists weren’t completely satisfied with this one too.

His interview lasted the longest although he was asked only 2 questions. Some conclusions drawn from his experience and tips to follow to prepare for the same are

  • Study the proofs from Discrete Math and Data Structure and Algorithms.
  • Be well-versed with all major definitions and prepare some good examples to support your definition.
  • Explain the questions asked in detail and not in short

Hope you got an idea of the type of questions asked in the MTech CSE interview.

How are the hostels in IIT Delhi, for girls especially?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

The rooms in the IIT Delhi girls' hostels are rather spacious and decked with basic amenities. For freshers, triple occupancy rooms are allotted.

A typical room in a girls' hostel has basic stuff that every roommate shares such as study tables, chairs, beds, tube lights, windows, and other basic things. Other than this,

  • The food served in the mess is of average quality.
  • There are no AC or cooler facilities
  • The girls' hostel is located close to the academic area
  • There are 3 LAN ports in each room.

All in all, the hostel facilities for girls at IIT Delhi are decent.

Should I choose NSIT COE or IIT Delhi Civil?

A
Admin Posted On : July 9th, 2024

I am a Civil Engineering student at IIT Delhi.

Even though CoE/ CSE/ IT are much more sought after by students in the present times, I would choose Civil at IIT Delhi over CoE at NSUT.

Here are the reasons for the same:

  • The faculty at IIT Delhi is much more experienced and learned than that at NSUT.
  • IIT Delhi was established in 1961, while NSUT in 1983. Because of this, IIT Delhi has a stronger alumni network.
  • IIT Delhi is a globally recognized brand, while NSUT is usually only known to students of North India. The “IIT” brand is immensely helpful when applying to foreign universities for higher studies.
  • Although civil freshers are rarely in demand, a civil engineer with enough work experience, the right set of skills, and great project accomplishments is paid a high salary.

These are the 2023 placement figures for both these institutions:

Particulars

IIT DELHI

NSUT

Median CTC

-

INR 17 LPA (B.Tech)

Average CTC

INR 17.60 LPA (Overall)

-

% Batch placed

84.94% (Overall)

(Students Placed in B.Tech: 977)

Top Recruiters

Google, Deloitte, BCG, HCL Technologies, Lenskart, Flipkart, etc.

(2024)

Unfortunately, the branch-wise placement detail is not available for both these institutes.

However, based on the various reasons listed above, I would recommend you choose IIT Delhi Civil Engineering over NSUT CoE.

Which is better, IIT Delhi (chemical) or BITS Pilani (CSE)?

A
Admin Posted On : July 9th, 2024

I am a B.Tech Chemical Engineering student at IIT Delhi. According to me, these are the main factors you should consider while making up your mind:

  • Demand: CSE is more in-demand than chemical engineering.
  • Brand: The “IIT” tag holds more brand value than the “BITS” tag. The “IIT” tag will be more advantageous if you want to apply to foreign universities for higher education later on.
  • Fees: IIT Delhi is an affordable choice, whereas, BITS Pilani has high fees for its engineering programs. Additionally, IIT Delhi has better placements, which places it at a better position in terms of ROI.

Here is a comparison between IIT Delhi Chemical and BITS Pilani CSE:

Parameters

IIT Delhi Chemical

BITS Pilani CSE

Course Fee

INR 99,650 (for sem-1)*

INR 3.32 lakh (for sem-1)

Highest Package (2023: Overall)

INR 2.5 CPA

INR 60. 75 LPA

Average Package (2023: Overall)

INR 17.60 LPA

INR 30.37 LPA

CTC Range (for 2023)

-

(IT branches) INR 11 - 38 LPA

Campus Recruiters

Microsoft, CISCO, Accenture, Brain & company, Jaguar Land Rover India Limited

EY, HSBC,KPMC, HCL,IBM, TCS

*This is the fee-structure for General/OBC students with family income>5 LPA.

Even though CSE is a highly sought after branch in the current market, I would suggest you opt for Chemical Engineering at IIT Delhi. IIT Delhi will offer a better ROI, and its brand name will be of immense benefit if you wish to pursue higher studies in India and abroad after graduation.

You can do some research on the career and research opportunities after Chemical Engineering, and see if this branch aligns with your future goals.

IIT Delhi or IIT Kanpur for electrical engineering? Also, I really dont know what my interest is in, how do I know if electrical engineering is right for me?

SN
Saugata Nayak Posted On : April 20th, 2023
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2020)

As far as the choice of the Institute is concerned, I will recommend you go for IIT Delhi instead of IIT Kanpur. Here are a few reasons that support my recommendation

  • Ranking-wise, IIT Delhi Electrical is better than IIT Kanpur.
  • Location-wise too, IIT Delhi fairs are better than Kanpur considering its central location. Moreover, it has the facilities of coaching institutes nearby, making it possible for students to prepare for higher exams

Coming to the choice of the branch, it might be difficult for some to identify their area of interest as of now. However, I can give you a slight info into both of the most preferred branches viz CS and Electrical.

CS: It comprises abstract math and algorithms. It involves step-wise problem-solving concepts wherein you get an answer after following a clear pattern. If this is your forte, then CS is for you.

Electrical: If you like playing with circuits and have an interest in dealing with graphs and their analysis, EE is for you.

As a side interest, you can always opt for open electives after the 2nd year that allows you to pursue more than one branch at a time. Truth be told, the packages offered to CS students are bigger than those offered to EE students.

How are the placements for energy studies at IIT Delhi?

SM
Subhashree Modak Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2020)

Some key highlights of the placements for Energy Studies at IIT Delhi are

  • Top companies that have ties with IIT Delhi for placements are GE Power, Sterling Power, John Deere, ABB India, Deloitte India, Applied Materials, and Renault-Nissan.
  • Most students who had average or above-average academic profiles were able to get a good role
  • Most of the students chase placements only and have no interest in acquiring knowledge and skills. So try not to adopt such a mindset and invest maximum efforts to reap benefits.
  • Always be ready to work hard and face challenges. You will face tough competition as you will be dealing with geniuses of the country so prepare yourself for the same.
  • Be open to multitasking or else you won’t be able to survive long. I know a friend who was a T&P coordinator who would do his joint project during the day and study for his additional course during the night.
  • Make sure you start your project way before others

I will strongly recommend not joining IIT if your goal is to prepare for GATE or IES as you will be stealing someone else’s seat unnecessarily.
