Would it be a mistake if I choose IIM Trichy over IIM Shillong?
IIM Shillong has recently celebrated its 13th year, and this year's placements have been better than in previous years. These placements have been more successful than those at IIM Trichy, and the roles offered have also been of a higher quality. In terms of infrastructure, IIM Trichy has an advantage, but the faculty at both institutes is roughly comparable. Based on current trends, it is advised to consider IIM Shillong for its strong placement record and improving performance.
While placements at IIM Trichy are not bad and students can expect to receive good roles and pay, IIM Shillong currently holds the lead in terms of success in placements. Some students at IIM Trichy have even left the institute for IIM Shillong due to its stronger placement performance.
Should I join the PGP of IIM Shillong?
Asking others if you should join a certain program is illogical. I think it’s a decision that you have to take solely yourself. People can guide you in your decision but cannot make the decision on your behalf. That is exactly what I am here for. I will list down the parameters you should consider while making your decision. The rest is up to you.
- Try looking at other available options at hand. Comparing your options is a good way to decide on your B School.
- Ask yourself if you are confident enough to drop a year and attempt for CAT again just to try your shot at a better B School.
- Check whether the domain specialization of IIM, the companies that visit the campus and the roles they offer are in line with your career interests.
Once you are sure about these things, making a good decision will become easier for you.
How good is IIM Raipur, and what is the position amongst the six new IIMs and Shillong?
Firstly let me clarify one thing. IIM Raipur cannot be compared to IIM Shillong because the latter is out of the league and is no longer a new IIM. Its worth and placements are much better than the newer IIMs and are in the league of old IIMs. We can only compare IIM Raipur to the 6 new IIMs namely Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur, and Kashipur.
After Shillong, one new IIM that gives an edge to older IIMs is Ranchi mainly because it works under the mentorship of IIM Calcutta. The placement statistics of IIM Ranchi are a testament to the same.
After Ranchi comes to Trichy, one of the fastest-growing IIMs. It has a decent placement scenario and a better professional approach.
Raipur and Udaipur are almost similar and are better than Kashipur and Rohtak. Raipur especially enjoys location advantage being situated in the capital of Chattisgarh. The faculty base is also quite learned and the institute has proper connectivity.
Kashipur has many connectivity issues but is famous for its guest lectures and interaction with industry experts.
IIM Rohtak is the last in line mainly because of its pathetic placement scenario which overshadows its vicinity to Delhi.
So the final order is
Shillong>Ranchi>Trichy>Raipur=Udaipur>Kashipur>Rohtak
Which one is better between IIM Lucknow PGP sustainability Management and IIM Shillong PGP and why?
IIM Lucknow is one of the older IIMs and therefore has a stronger alumni base. IIMs mostly specialize in Core Management and Investment Banking. So before you consider taking Sustainable Management look up at the figures and campus records.
Sustainable Management is only beneficial if at the end of the program you have formed professional colleagues or have come up with a business idea.
Currently, Sustainable Development lacks the demand and credibility enjoyed by other domains. So it’s a risky choice and should be considered only if you are serious about it or don’t have any other options.
Should I join IIM Shillong or Krannert Purdue for an MBA? Please answer considering the USA market conditions.
It is important to consider the reputation and brand strength of both IIM Shillong and Purdue University when making a decision about which institution to attend. While IIM Shillong is a well-respected business school in India, Purdue University is a globally recognized institution with a strong reputation. If a candidate has confidence in their own abilities and is willing to take a risk, Purdue University may offer more opportunities and a different career path than IIM Shillong.
However, if a candidate is unsure of their ability to succeed or is looking for a more established and reliable path, IIM Shillong may be a better choice. It is important to carefully consider one's own goals and abilities before making a decision about which institution to attend.
Which one is better for the long term: an MBA from IIM Shillong, IIM Trichy or SJMSoM IIT B?
IIT B is particularly known for its specialization in Operations. Although it has a decent specialization in other domains like Marketing and IT as well, it is for Operations that people usually choose it. Some consider IIM Shillong or Trichy a better option for Finance. But I personally think that SJMSom IIT B is overall a better choice.
I cannot choose one between IIM Trichy and Shillong as both are at an equal level at this point. Despite being new, Trichy has managed to be in the league of Shillong. It has been growing at a fast pace and may even surpass IIM Shillong in the near future.
So if I am to rank the above options it has to be
SJMSom>IIM Shillong=IIM Trichy
Should I pursue my MBA in Canada from a mediocre university (like McMaster or UBC), or should I get into a new IIM (Shillong, Udaipur, etc.) in India if I ultimately want to settle down in Canada?
If you have already decided to settle abroad, investing your time and money in the new IIMs is useless. You should start looking for the top B Schools in your preferred country. Moreover, the IIMs, even the older ones, have a non-existent international scope.
So why invest so much money in something that will not improve your chances of settling abroad? To make it easier I have listed a few Canadian Business Schools that are the most preferred ones.

- York University
- University of British Columbia
- McMaster University

Between IIM Shillong, SJMSOM, and IIM Trichy, which college is best? I am looking for a good learning experience and placements.
The Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM) in Mumbai offers several advantages to its students. According to a report, the highest salary package for the 2022 batch at SJMSOM was approximately 49.39% higher than the previous year, at INR 49 LPA. The average salary for the 2020-2022 batch was also 18.1% higher than the previous year, at INR 25.9 LPA.
SJMSOM attracts highly prestigious companies for recruitment, including JP Morgan, ICICI Bank, Infosys Consulting, KPMG Global Services, PwC India, Wipro, and MAQ Software, among others. The smaller batch size at SJMSOM allows for more opportunities for students to participate in activities and committees, promoting their holistic development.
SJMSOM also offers a high number of live projects and industry interaction sessions, providing students with knowledge and experience beyond what is found in textbooks. When considering SJMSOM as an option, students may also be considering other institutes such as IIM K or IIM I. It is worth noting that while IIM Trichy is a good college, new IIMs may still be in the process of establishing themselves.
With 84% in 10th, 79% in 12th, a 7.89 CGPA and 3 yrs of work experience, am I eligible for the IIM Shillong and IIM Udaipur? I am a GEM.
You are eligible for both IIMs. Your academics, on the other hand, are mediocre, which can work against you.
IIM Udaipur will contact you solely on the basis of your CAT score. IIM Shillong, on the other hand, may or may not. IIM-S has stringent admission requirements.
My only piece of advice is to ignore everything else and concentrate on getting a high CAT percentile, preferably above 99.5, and you'll almost certainly get into one of the IIMs.
With a balanced sectional and good percentile in CAT, you should get calls from both these institutes. Also, prepare well for the interview. The interview part of admission is the most difficult, so try to be confident as much as you can.
If you are confident that you will get a great percentile in CAT, you can also apply for FMS.
Is it good to do Executive MBA from IIM Shillong being a mechanical engineer having 5 years of experience in manufacturing industry?
IIM Shillong is a decent option for an executive MBA. Having 5 years of experience will give you an edge. During IIM Shillong placement 2022, Manufacturing and Retail sectors offered around 19% of job offers.
However, institutes such as NITIE, Mumbai, or ISB Hyderabad will be better, for Manufacturing. NITIE Mumbai placements are excellent for Manufacturing. During the recent placement drive, the highest CTC offered from the manufacturing sector was INR 24 LPA.
