How did you succeed in cracking CUSAT?
One of my seniors was planning to appear for JEE Mains to get admission to one of the NITs or IITs. He had a percentile of 94.87 in maths. The CUSAT CAT exams will not be difficult for you if you have been preparing a question of the JEE level.
- 125 questions come from Mathematics, 75 from Physics, and 50 from Chemistry. Quite obviously, maths will define your probability here. It is suggested that you be fast in that subject.
- However, the questions are not as easy as those of KEAMs’ but if you refer to the NCERT and/or Arihant Books, then you can get into the CUSAT CAT B.Tech rank list.
- In addition to that, if you manage to complete at least 200 questions, you will have a chance to get a rank of 1000.
- If you wish to get into Naval Architecture and Ship Building, your rank has to be around 550 and 1400 for Safety and Fire.
- For Computer Science, your rank has to be around 1000.

There are few of the great start-ups, founded and raised by students of Cochin University of Science and Technology,or popularly abbreviated as Cusat. Those of which are discussed beneath.
- Mashinga: This was the first startup that people started coming across from SOE CUSAT. This amazing start-up, named Mashinga, is known to be successfully selling products across various industries. It is rather one great piece of news to know.
- Bisko Labs: This start-up developed naturally by students of Cusat that is popularly known for developing a patented automatic gear transmission system for manual bikes. This company has won a chance to lift various awards and recognition among Top Vehicle companies.
- Mobiopush: This is yet another start-up founded on grounds of the campus by intelligent brains. This start-up followed up to be the first student SASS Startup in India and has been serving more than 1000 customers.
- Exploride: It is another successful start-up raised in Kerala. The co-founder of this start-up is a student of Cusat. They saw the largest crowdfunding campaign from the whole nation, which is rather another news to notice. Various prototypes were actually developed with other Cusat students too.
- Innov8 Coworking Space: This can however be regarded as one of a kind. It is co-founded by a student of Cusat as well. This is India’s ultimate co-working space. Begun in late 2015, this saw success within its few months of operation.
Cusat has recently inaugurated a brand new division that is known as Tinkerhub.It is where students are permitted to develop technologies and are mentored by numerous experts from the start-up space. How good are the placements for a B.Tech in safety and fire engineering at CUSAT?
I have a few friends at CUSAT, so I think I can give you an idea about the placement opportunities available for their Fire and Safety department.
Fire and Safety Engineering can be quite challenging. If you are serious about your studies and put in the required effort you will definitely have enough opportunities at the time of placements. But if you are not that serious about academics and end up having backlogs the faculty will not help you during placements.
If you are sincere you can get packages similar to the ones offered at reputed IITs and NITs. Here is a brief highlight of the recent placement statistics for the branch.
- Highest CTC - 14 lakhs
- Major recruiters - BPCL, IOCL, JSW, etc.
Also, it is worth mentioning that CUSAT is NBA Tier - 1 accredited. Other than CUSAT, only IITs and NITs have NBA accreditation. So, CUSAT is definitely a worthy choice for a B.Tech in Fire and Safety Engineering.
How is the IT branch in CUSAT and CUCEK?
In Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) engineering is offered by SOE (Kochi) whereas in CUCEK engineering is offered by (Alappuzha). Having friends studying in both the colleges, I can say that they are equally good.
- When it comes to the IT sector CUSAT introduced IT in India and is considered a pioneer for the IT sector.
- The IT branch is well facilitated in both CUCEK and SOE and is considered a good course to opt for here.
- Both the institutes are well established and have created a name for them.
- Faculties in both are well trained with a lot of experience.
- Both of them have world-class labs with the latest equipment and technologies to equip students with the latest inventions.
- Placements are also good for IT. Mostly they get placed in the southern region of the country like in Bangalore, Hyderabad and etc with good packages.

There’s not a single reason for not opting IT in these colleges. IT is a demanding branch and has potential to grow in the future as do these colleges.
Which is better- SMVDU or CUSAT?
I had a friend who was a student of CUSAT. He scored 181 marks in JEE Main and was allotted north-east NITs and SMVDU. Power Engineering at Jadavpur was also offered to him with his WB JEE Exam. But he wanted to get into CUSAT in Safety & Fire Engineering at SOE.
- Reason for selection: If I talk about SMVDU, you would end up competing with students from various reputed colleges. The syllabus of CUSAT is much better in terms of completion.
- Location factor: Since the location of CUSAT is in Kerala, you would be surrounded amidst the peace and you would have so much to explore as well!
- Campus placement: If you end up doing your B.Tech from the first campus (SOE) leaving behind the Civil Department- it is safe to say that you would get placed. If you manage to get to the Safety & Fire Engineering (IT/CSE), you would earn a good package too.
Back when my friend had passed out in 2018, students from Safety & Fire Engineering were placed in some great companies like- Maruti, ONGC, GAIL, Reliance, Maharatna, etc. For campus placements, you'd witness reputed companies around you. Plus, any placement offered by CSE, ECE, IT, or Mechanical departments is much better than SMVDU's.
Read the following points before taking any decision -
- CUSAT is in Kerala and you would witness a sort of South-Indian union among the Kerala masses along with special reservations for Keralites almost everywhere.
- Do not let the language barrier get to you and instead of feeling low, learn it and work on your communication skills.
- College strikes would happen often because of SFI and other parties.
- Your interaction would be confided to Keralites, U.P, or Bihar students.
- The culture and traditions that are followed in Kerala are entirely different from the North.
If you are getting SOE, then prefer it over SMVDU. Apart from that, Kerala is a very beautiful place that you should enjoy thoroughly.
Will I be eligible for CSE in CUSAT with 258 marks? What approximately would be my CUSAT rank?
The eligibility for admission in CSE at CUSAT depends on various factors, such as the number of candidates appearing for the exam, the difficulty level of the paper, and the cutoff trends from previous years. However, based on previous year trends, with 258 marks in CUSAT CAT, you have a good chance of being eligible for CSE at CUSAT.
As for the approximate rank, it is difficult to determine the exact rank as the rank is influenced by various factors, such as the difficulty level of the exam, the number of students appearing for the exam, and the previous year's cutoff. However, based on previous year trends, your estimated rank could be in the range of 1000 to 2000.

What is photo counseling in CUSAT admissions?
During CUSAT admission counseling, they verify that there is no fraud and you are the same person as the photo that was given in the registration form. This process is known as photo counseling. This round is just for verification purposes. This process ensures that there are no discrepancies during admission.
Which is better: CUSAT or JNTU Hyderabad?
CUSAT and JNTU Hyderabad, both the colleges are good. I have few friends at both, so I can give you some insight into them.
- JNTU Hyderabad is a reputed institute. According to the placement report which is given by the college companies like TCS, Wipro, cognizant, etc visits the campus.
- CUSAT is a better choice than JNTU Hyderabad. As in CUSAT, you would get a lot of exposure. The facilities are up to the mark even though it is not much of a luxurious college.
- You will get a proper atmosphere to learn and as far as the study is concerned you will get adequate material here for study purposes. The library facilities are good and it is quite large. You will also get adequate facilities for games and sports.
- The campus placement of CUSAT also holds a better record than that of JNTU Hyderabad. For better placement, you have to work hard and pass the exams. As the syllabus and whole curriculum are a bit tougher than that of JNTU Hyderabad. Also, the ranking of CUSAT is higher than that of JNTU Hyderabad.
So, it’s better to go for CUSAT.
CUSAT or VIT, which is better?
Both of these colleges are good. VIT is the best private engineering college in India. Whereas CUSAT is also a reputed institute. CUSAT is a government college, and VIT is a private college. Thereby, you will get a better facility in VIT rather than in CUSAT.
Hostel Facilities: (Winning Institution - VIT)
However, the hostel facilities are also not up to the mark in CUSAT. But VIT offers good hostel accommodation. But VIT charges a lot for hostels.
Course Fee & Infrastructure: (Winning Institution - VIT)
- The education fees for entire engineering courses in VIT are around 16-18 lakhs, including food, lodging, and education fees. In comparison CUSAT charges around 8 lakhs for the same. Thus, VIT is quite costly.
- But it can be mentioned that VIT is far better than CUSAT. The better infrastructural facilities in VIT assist the student in their entire courses. Whereas in CUSAT, college infrastructure is not like VIT.
Placement: (VIT ~ CUSAT)
You will get good exposure in both of these institutes. Placement records of both of these colleges are also outstanding. If you work hard, you can bad a decent salary package from the campus placement from any of these colleges.

If you want to get better infrastructural facilities and good food and lodging, then you should go for VIT. But CUSAT is more affordable and it is also a good choice with excellent placement statistics.
Which is better, CET Trivandrum or CUSAT?
Among these, CET Trivandrum is better. It has a heritage of over 75 years and a well-established alumni base. The alumni of the institute are well-established across the globe.
CET has good infrastructure and facilities. The campus is fully wifi equipped. Students are given access to central computing facilities and central library. CET organized many technical, cultural, and political activities throughout the academic year, in which you can take part according to your interest.
CET Trivandrum placements are good. During the 2022 placement drive, more than 150 recruiters took part in the campus drive. The highest CTC offered was INR 33 LPA.
