B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2021)

My brother pursued his MS in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras back in 2016 and these are some of his experiences for the overall MS program offered at IIT Madras-

  1. The MS program at IIT Madras is extremely fulfilling for students who want to pursue a career in research by going for a Ph.D. and Post Doc.
  2. The MS program is different from the M.Tech program. The M.Tech program is highly coursework oriented and is a better choice for securing a job.
  3. IIT Madras has, over the years, made efforts to give MS graduates an equal chance at placements.
  4. MS students tend to focus a lot more on their thesis as compared to M.Tech students.
  5. MS students are given an extra year to submit their thesis (2+1).
  6. An MS student, by the time of placement, will have worked extensively on a scientific topic and published at least one article in a reputed journal, or his article will be under review.
  7. This research work holds benefits during placements. The MS student’s CV is made impressive and data analysis and scientific reporting skills are highlighted. A little smart work will help you convince your interviewer of how these skills make you a suitable candidate for the offered position.
  8. Very few IITs offer an MS degree and many employers are unaware of this course.
  9. The MS degree becomes demanding and tough because you need to get an article published in an international journal to obtain your degree.

Though not specific to the Mechanical branch, I hope this information about the MS program at IIT Madras helped you gain important insights regarding the same.

Studied at IIT Madras (2019)

IIT Madras is a tremendous college. The ambiance, the seniors, the faculty all are outstanding and cooperative. Being a part of IIT Madras, I can say that the institution provides for a competitive learning field for engineering and career options.

  • MS is a research-oriented program that provides for its students to enhance their research skills. It requires the students to take an active participation in research studies at IIT Madras.
  • Candidates are selected based on their GATE score, UG CGPA and Interview performance, similar to M.Tech candidates’ selection.
  • The candidates are provided with the opportunity for Half-time Teaching/Research Assistantship of 12,400 per month upto 3 years.
  • An MS student has a beneficial edge as the students get to work directly with the professor in their chosen field of research.

Exposure:

  • Research Scholars day: It is an opportunity for the research scholars to go beyond their limitations of their laboratories and witness research and gain first-hand experience.
  • Shaastra:is an annual technical festival of IIT Madras. The festival lasts for four days and four knights during the beginning week of January. It attracts participation from the diverse parts of India. Shaastra provides for the students a platform to showcase their scientific and engineering talents.
  • A Global Outreach: a number of opportunities are offered to the students to travel abroad and attend international conferences.

MS candidates have been placed in vast numbers with great offers. You will get to learn a lot and build yourself up for your career ahead. You will get industrial exposure, seminars and internships also. Conducted by big companies like Cognizant, PwC, etc. You would not regret having gone for it, as the college life here is fun and quite happening.
