Dhanrajgiri Hostel is among the oldest hostels in IIT BHU. It dates back to the days when the institute was known as IT BHU. In fact, it is the first hostel on the engineering campus of BHU. Naturally, the hostel building is quite old and in need of renovation.
To accommodate the increasing number of students, IIT BHU has decided to demolish the hostel and rebuild it as Boys Hostel - I (S+10) and Dining Block (G+1 floor).
IIT BHU was not IIT BHU from the start. Previously it used to be IT BHU and it came under Banaras Hindu University. Only recently it became an IIT and started regulating as an autonomous body. IT BHU was established in 1971 and all the hostels were also built around that time. Even after becoming an independent body, those same hostels are still used to accommodate students in IIT BHU. As the hostels were built back in 1971, those hostels are over 45 years old. Although the other hostels are in good shape and well maintained, being one of the oldest hostels of IIT BHU, Dhanraj Giri’s condition is not that good. Dhanraj Giri hostel was in a dilapidated condition, with the ceiling crumbling at several places. That’s the reason why the administration decided to demolish it to ensure that no one got hurt. The other hostel’s condition is pretty good. There is no sign of any damage even though they are old. Dhanraj Giri is the only hostel that is getting demolished. Last year a new hostel was built to accommodate the increased number of students in this IIT.
