It depends on the subject that you are applying to. The required cutoff varies depending on the subject. For admission, some department accepts students based on their board marks. While for some departments, you will need to seat for an entrance test. Usually, to get admission at Lady Brabourne College, you will need more than 60% in aggregate with a minimum of 75% in your subject of preference.
My sister studied economics at Lady Brabourne College for 3 years and from that experience, she came to realize that Jadavpur University would've been the better option.
The subjects taught at Lady Brabourne College were very hectic and lengthy answers were asked in exams and even then you will be given low marks.
Whereas in Jadavpur university, the faculty number is vast and they are all very well read and experts in their fields. Amartya Sen is one of the JU professors. You will find that the semesters are well spaced too so that even if you study all year long, it won't feel like a burden. Economics has not only a very advanced syllabus but also a very brilliant faculty who focus on the development of students and remain unaffected by university politics.
One thing is for sure, that as a JU student you will not require tuition fees because the faculty will always be ready to solve all your doubts and answer each query.
Based on the trends of last few years, Lady Brabourne College cutoff for Microbiology stays quite high, above 90%. Shortlisted candidates need to go through an interview, in order to get admission at LBC.
The cutoff criteria are similar for Scottish Church College as well. Admission to Scottish Church is based strictly on merit.
Admissions will be according to the rules of Calcutta University that is through overall merit and entrance exams conducted by the university.
For B.Sc. you will require a score of 85% or above to secure a seat for admission. It also depends on the subject you are applying for.
To qualify in the first round of counselling you will require a minimum of 93% aggregate, but this percentage gradually drops down to 87–88% in the second counselling.
It also depends on the basis they calculate the percentile, like for Economics, mathematics marks is considered. The cut off for microbiology and statistics are much higher when compared to other science subjects, so it varies.
The hostels at Lady Brabourne College, (LBC) Kolkata are very basic and usual. The building is very old with corridors having fewer lights making it difficult to walk around.
Many students opt to stay in the hostel but if you want an alternative you can choose to stay as a paying guest. There are many places nearby. The people here are very cooperative and overall it is a good college, so there will not be many problems.
It will depend on the cut-off marks as set up by the college. It differs from year to year. If you score above 85 your chances of getting selected in the first round will be easier.
Later it will gradually drop down to 75-80. This will also vary among students of reserved and unreserved categories. Students belonging to reserved categories might require a lower score like 70-75, which can drop down to 60-65, depending on the course and the college’s set cut off.
Lady Brabourne College is one of the best options under CU for a B.A or B.Sc. The faculty base of the Economics department is excellent. Classes are held regularly. The faculty members are also patient about clearing doubts. Although there are a few cons regarding the CU syllabus, overall Lady Brabourne is a great option for pursuing a degree in Economics.
The class timings are 10 AM to 4:30 PM. The Honours classes can take place at any time of the day.
The day might begin with an honours class with the very last class being for honours subject too.
All the departments are very strict, so you cannot skip any of the honours classes if you have attended one already.
You must be very particular with attendance in college as it is strictly checked. Failure to maintain a 70% attendance will restrict you from sitting in the selection exams.
One of my friends studied in Lady Brabourne College with Physics (Hons). The criteria was an exact 100 in physics. The criteria for other boards may be equal or vary.
This might have changed over the years, but chances are very less if you have scored less than 95.
St Xavier’s College’ Chemistry (Hons.) criteria is around 95–98%. Some students with 90% or above will get admission through 3rd or 4th list if there are vacant seats.
Therefore to secure a seat, your overall percentage must be more than 95 and in the subject you want to pursue for your honors, you must have a higher score than 97, from whichever board you graduate from.
Lady Brabourne is comparably better for a Political Science (Hons). It is one of the top colleges in Kolkata. The faculty base is great. However, it is quite difficult to get admission at the institute as the number of seats is limited. They are also quite strict regarding attendance.
Loreto College is also one of the most reputed colleges in Kolkata. And both Lady Brabourne and Loreto come under Calcutta University. So, you will take the same examinations and go through the same evaluation process.
