One of my friends was able to secure a 9 CGPA at Thapar University. He claimed that no extra hard work was required and all he had to do was determine the right strategy. Firstly he divided the semester into two parts. The major and minor courses. Assuming that the semester had 6 courses in all,

  • Major courses: 3 courses- 1 lab+3 lectures 1 tutorial per week.
  • Minor courses 3 courses: 3 lectures and one tutorial

For Midsemetser, he attended 90-95 percent classes, 100% labs, and maximum tutorials. Once the result has been declared he chose an easy and a difficult course depending on the results. Then for the End Semesters, he worked in other subjects diligently. His goal was to score 2 A' in Course Major and 2 A's in Course Minors and Bs in the rest of the courses.

He repeated the same strategy and was able to score a 9 CGPA!

You need to study smart to score more than 9 CGPA at Thapar University. Here are some tips that can help you score better.

  • Attend at least 85-90% of lectures. Paying attention to lectures can help you get a good grasp on the syllabus and you don’t need to put huge effort while preparing for the examination.
  • Attend tutorials. Most students bunk these. But in the tutorials, important questions and numerical are discussed.
  • You don’t need to cover everything, in order to score better. If you attend classes and tutorials regularly, you can figure out what is likely to come in the examination.
  • Go through previous years' questions, and check what type of questions are coming from which section.

Try to score well in the mid-semester. The mid-semester syllabus is less and you can score easily.

I have a friend from Thapar University who scored 10 in three semesters and her CGPA was 9.5. Here are her suggestions on scoring well.

  • Catching power - Know the catching power of your mind. If you can understand new topics quickly, then starting your preparations only a month before the examination can be enough. But if you need more time learning new concepts you will need to revise, so you have to start early.
  • Writing skills and astuteness - You need to understand the expectations of the teachers. Some want highly concise and logical answers while some expect long-winded answers. So you need to figure out the expectations of the teachers.
  • Score well in Labs and Tutorials - Don't miss labs. If you have an M. Tech student as your lab supervisor, be friendly. Being amicable with the lab attendant will fetch you good marks in the practicals. Tutorials fetch you good marks as they are generally about maintaining a tutorial notebook so try not to miss them.
  • Most importantly score well in the mid semesters - The pressure to score well burdens everyone during the end-semester examinations. Since the syllabus in mid-semester examinations is less, you should focus on performing well in the mid-semester.
  • Focus on the grading system and identify subjects where you will score fewer marks due to the expertise of the faculty but you may get a good grade due to the negligence of your classmates.

Analyze your midsemester performance and plan accordingly.
