Bachelors of technology at National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur

I will first give you a brief about each. Civil deals with building houses, bridges etc. Metallurgy deals with building high quality metals which are then used in houses, bridges, cars etc.

I’ll compare these two at NIT Jamshedpur to help you with your decision-making-

  • Placements- As Jamshedpur is a TATA city, it has more metallurgical companies. These companies provide good internship opportunities to NIT Jamshedpur students. This in turn fetches companies from outside during placement season. Civil students usually prepare for GATE or other exams. There’s a high chance for you to get placed in a startup or IT company, in both the branches. If this suits you, prepare for those placements accordingly.
  • Professors - The civil department does not have a good faculty. In terms of faculty, Metallurgy is better.
  • Curriculum- Both the branches have a rich curriculum which is equally huge.
  • Events- Technica is the tech fest of the metallurgy department.
  • Stress-factor- Civil has a lot of classes. Civil students have to put in extra hard work with less core companies offering placements. This causes a lot of stress during the 4th year.
  • Gender Ratio- Metallurgy has a better boys to girls ratio.

I recommend you research both these branches and then make your decision. If you have interest in one of these, go for that branch. Other than that, as per me, the Metallurgy branch is better.
