Campus Insights

IIT Mandi's permanent campus is located at Kamand and is divided into two parts: South and North Campus.
The residential campus has a surreal landscape surrounded by the river Uhl

Clubs

Students who are technology lovers have formed their own clubs to promote the same. Some of them are:

Robotronics Club: This club organizes workshops and combines robotics with electronics along with the "RoboWars" for the "Robo" Freaks.
Programming Club: This club is for coding lovers to explore beyond academics.

Societies and Events

The literary society of IIT Mandi EDLS organizes Group Discussions, Debates, and Just a Minute regularly.
The Music Society, Dramatics Society, and Dance Society also conduct competitions daily.
IIT Mandi's annual Tech-Cult Fest is Exodia wherein the students showcase their creativity and talents

Hostel Facility

IIT Mandi has a residential campus housing around 1300 students in 5 boys’ hostels and 2 girls’ hostels.
The south campus consists of four hostels; while the north campus has three hostels.
IIT Mandi has four messes on the campus, two each on both campuses.
The hostels have all basic facilities like WI-FI internet connection, LCD television, washing machine, cloth dryer, microwave oven, induction heater, refrigerator, electric iron and facilities for indoor games such table tennis, foosball, carom, etc.

So, The students of IIT Mandi love to participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, thereby ensuring a very strong all-round development of their personality.

IIT Mandi offers an enviable campus life. Here is a little insight.

Surrounded by mountains, the campus is beautiful and free of pollution.
Students are provided with all basic amenities.
Wifi speed is decent.
Mess food is good. There are also a few canteen facilities available.
IIT Mandi has several clubs - Robotronics club, and Programming club.
Many cultural and technical events are organized around the academic year. Exodia is the tech-cult fest of IIT Mandi.
There are many places to visit around the campus.

Overall, you will like being on campus.

One of my friends is a student of IIT Mandi. Below are a set of good and bad points of the university which will help you gauge the quality of life to expect here.

Advantages:

Location- Wherever you are on the campus, be it a hostel or academic block, the views are simply awesome. The campus is fully surrounded by mountains. The river Uhl flows just beside the campus and the river Beas is also not far away.
Hostel- The south campus is almost fully built, so you won’t feel a lack of facility at any place. The speed of the wifi is good, if not the best. The food at the hostel is also nothing to complain about. There are other canteens as well for the occasional change in routine.
Academics- The professors are also really good and knowledgeable; you will find some professors not up to the mark, but that’s really every campus’s tale.
Free Time- You will get plenty of them here which you can utilize to get involved in projects which are generally reserved for 3rd and 4th year students. You will get enough time to manage your hobbies and at the same time score more than a CGPA of 9.0.
Placements- If you are in the computer science department, then bagging a package of INR 20 LPA to INR 25 LPA should not be much difficult, with a little effort. Core branches like Electrical or Mechanical generally get a lower package, as with most other colleges, but that should not deter you if you have a strong passion for the subject.

Disadvantages:

Location- Mandi is not a big city either and sometimes small things such as finding a service center for your iPhone will take you to Shimla which is 150 km away. Finding quality parts for your project, especially mechatronics, will be painful. You will have to travel to Delhi or Chandigarh for the same.
Institute- The university is only 11 years old and not in a major city. Thus finding sponsors for fests is a difficult task. Equipment in certain clubs, like the Music Club, is not of a high standard, and space is constrained as well.

Thus overall, the right mixture of academics, faculty, amazing location, and good placements along with plenty of free time for projects and hobbies, make life at IIT Mandi truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
