BITSian

BIT Mesra (Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra) is a semi-government-funded technical institute. BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani) is a private deemed university in Pilani, Rajasthan.

Apart from the name “Birla” and the founders who were related, nothing between them is related to the other. They are two separate universities altogether.

  • BIT Mesra is a GFTI (Government Funded Technical Institute), so government reservation policies apply, while BITS Pilani is a wholly private university, so no reservation.
  • In terms of reputation, alumni presence, rankings (BITS Pilani is ranked 15 in NIRF university ranking 2020 while BIT Mesra is ranked 66 in the same ranking), etc. BITS Pilani is way ahead and is many times considered equivalent to top IITs while BIT Mesra is considered to be equivalent to decent NITs.

So, there is no similarity between the two universities except for the “Birla” name and they are two different universities run by two different business groups of the same family name.
