Yes, XLRI HRM students get placed in general consulting roles also. According to recent statistics, around 15% of students from HRM get placement opportunities in consulting firms. But most of these consulting jobs offered were either from Big4 or niche HR Consulting firms such as Mercer, Hewitt, Hay, etc. No sales/marketing roles are offered at XLRI. Management Trainee program is the only way to achieve a successful sales stint.
One of my cousins studied here and he suggested not to believe in any kind of fraudulent placement reports from different sources. Major recruiters during his time from the HR batch were Infosys and ICICI.
