How is Delhi university for an MSc in physics?

SS
Savi Sharma Posted On : July 5th, 2023

The Department of Physics and Astrophysics, Delhi University is one of the oldest and highly regarded departments of the institute. The faculty pool is actively involved in their own research work and encourages the students to do the same. researchers in their respective fields. This department has a plethora of experimental and theoretical studies.

Like every coin has two sides, this department has its own sets of weaknesses too. One of the main drawbacks is the high intake around 300. Thus high intake makes it difficult to get equal attention from teachers related to research, Ph.D. guidance, and seminars. It is also very challenging to organize any scientific or non-scientific programs because the batch size is very large and not every student can be convinced. The exams of this department are challenging and the limited resources make things more so.

If you are a sincere student who is ready to commit yourself to hard work and persistence you will excel here without any doubt.

Which institute is better for M.Sc. Physics IIT Kanpur or IIT Madras?

RP
Raveesha Pandey Posted On : July 30th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Both IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras are excellent institutes for M.Sc in Physics, considering the student is actually interested in learning the subject to the core.
The points below give a brief overview of IIT Madras, stating some of the advantages of choosing it over IIT Kanpur.
? Professors will help you to get involved in challenging projects during your course, with specializations in complex topics like cosmology, etc.
? The main motto of the faculties of IIT Madras is to build their students to at least a certain limit of knowledge, over anything else.
? Most of the professors have a solid foundation in advanced concepts of theoretical physics, for example, Prof. M V Satyanarayana, Prof. M Pattabiraman, Prof. V Balakrishnan, Prof. A Lakshminarayan, etc.
? Although the level of questions set during the exams at IIT Madras is always up to the mark, almost no students fail in the institute due to the teaching facilities offered throughout the year.
? Talking about the campus of IIT Madras, it is extremely beautiful, being close to the sea as well.
Therefore, although both the institutes are equally excellent, IIT Madras can be a better option for students interested in Physics, considering the points listed above.

Which one of these two is better for M.Sc in physics, IIEST Shibpur or NIT Durgapur? Are there any placements for M.Sc students at IIEST?

AS
Akriti Sinha Posted On : August 16th, 2022
B.Tech in Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology Durgapur

NIT Durgapur will be better for an M.Sc Physics. The quality of academics and exposure offered is better than any of the non-tech institutes in the region. Most students prepare for competitive examinations like NET, GATE, JEST, BARC, ISRO, etc. NITD also has collaborations with many national institutes and research labs.

Yes, IIEST offers placements to MSc students. But the salary packages offered aren’t very high.

How good is IIT Hyderabad for an MSc in Physics?

SA
Shruti Agarwal Posted On : May 9th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)

My brother had taken MSc in Physics because he was left with no other option but later realized it was the best decision of his life.

  • Being new, IIT Hyderabad has young and passionate faculty in contrast to old professors with old thinking at older IITs.
  • The lab equipment are latest and updated because IIT is new
  • You can take advantage of it being a new IIT by making your mark as a good researcher
  • There are many buses running to and fro the new campuses to enable easy transit

Ultimately, the final decision is yours to make. It’s good to refer to the website for more details regarding the program before making the final decision.

Which one will be better for an M. Sc. in Physics (IIT Madras or IIT Kharagpur)?

KK
Kanika Kasturia Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Studied at International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (2019)

This is a common dilemma faced by many who are applying for MSc. It requires a great research-oriented approach and thus the choice of the Institute should depend on the research work and projects offered by that institute. One needs a wide range of choices of courses so that you can select the one that matches your area of interest.

Before researching campus life, look up the faculty profiles available on the official website of the institutes. Once you come across a profile with the kind of research work you are looking for and want to work on, then choose that particular Institute.

My friend chose IIT Madras because she found diversity in the fields people worked in there. You can find people working in almost every field from Experimental Condensed Matter, Theoretical Condensed Matter, Nanotechnology, General relativity, and cosmology to String theory, Quantum computation, and chaos, High energy - particle physics, Theoretical and Experimental Optics, and Mathematical aspects.

IIT Madras maintains the right balance between Experimental and Theoretical Physics which is sometimes not possible at other IITs. Despite this many flocks to IIT Kharagpur mainly because of herd mentality. In reality, IIT Madras has a lot to offer provided you are committed to doing your part of your efforts.

Which university is better for an M.Sc in physics Burdwan, North Bengal, Visva Bharati University or Calcutta University?

TG
Titas Ghosh Posted On : September 28th, 2021
Completed Ph.D. in Experimental Particle Physics,Visva Bharati University,Santiniketan in 2020

A senior I know from school completed M.Sc in physics and in his opinion, the University of Calcutta is the best place to pursue this course.

  • 70% marks in B.Sc (Hons) in Physics is required to pursue this course at the University of Calcutta.
  • In the University of Burdwan, the faculties of the department of Physics had individually obtained some major research projects from funding agencies like DST, ARDB, ISRO, UGC, BRNS, CSIR, etc. and all these projects were completed successfully.
  • For admission to the University of North Bengal, you need to have at least 50% in B.Sc (Physics). The department has active research groups in the fields of - Liquid Crystal; Relativity, Cosmology, and Astrophysics; High-energy Heavy-ion Interaction, and Cosmic-ray Physics.
  • In the case of Visva Bharati University, you need to score at least 50% marks in Physics Honors.

The best option among the mentioned institutions is University of Calcutta. You will be offered great opportunities here.

Is CUSAT better than NITs for msc physics?

AM
Aritra Majumder Posted On : February 17th, 2021
MSc Physics & MATHEMATICS UNIVERSITY LEVEL, University of Kerala (1987)

NITs are generally much better than Cochin Institute Of Science & Technology (CUSAT) as they receive higher funding, seminar, workshops, facilities and have reputed international Scientists. They include -

  • Funding in the institution

The funding is straight from the government and therefore tends out to be more advanced in terms of technology and curriculum. All facilities are provided in order to make it a global course.

  • International Collaborations

The NIT across the nation are actively engaged in seminars/workshops that allow its candidates to have a great exposure towards good & eminent scientists across the globe.

CUSAT can compete with NOT only on the grounds of the Physics department as it is the only department that fulfils the criterion of good faculty and advanced projects in a general sense. The major areas to look up to are :

  • They try to interact with institutions like NCL, NIIST, Inter University Accelerator Centre New Delhi, IWATE University Japan.
  • There are almost 205 PhDs and approximately 1100 publications in international/ national journals.
  • Five Indian patents have also been filed within the department.

CUSAT gives you good opportunities but when it comes to choice between CUSAT & NIT ; surely the latter will be more preferable.
