Pondicherry University offers PhD programs in various specializations under 10 faculties and offers 30+ PhD courses under its departments & affiliated colleges. For applying, candidates must have passed a Master’s in a relevant subject with 55% marks. Admission to PhD programs at Pondicherry University will be based on merit secured in an entrance test followed by a personal interview conducted by the Pondicherry University or any other national-level entrance examination. Candidates who have qualified National Eligibility Test/ JRF/ UGC/ CSIR or UGC Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship for SC/ST or DBT-INSPIRE are exempted from the entrance examination conducted by the university. For the selection process, 70% weightage will be given to the PhD entrance exam conducted by Pondicherry University and 30% weightage for interview and academic record.

Pondicherry University offers PhD admission based on academic performance, entrance score & performance in Personal Interviews.

Selection Criteria

Selection to the PhD program at Pondicherry University is made based on the Entrance Examination (70%) followed by Personal Interview & Academic Record (30%) conducted by the university. NET/JRF-qualified candidates with fellowships will be given direct admission.

PhD Entrance Exam Pattern

For admission to the PhD courses, Pondicherry University conducts its entrance exam, conducted in the last week of May every year. 

  • The entrance exam is of 120 minutes
  • The entrance exam is a computer-based test consisting of 100 Multiple Choice questions.
  • 4 marks will be allotted for every correct answer while 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer
