RBU is an affiliating university. It offers UG, PG and Doctoral courses in its Main campus and in Jorasanko & Salt Lake campuses also.RBU was established on 1962. At present, it has three faculties, namely, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Visual Arts.

The university offers BA (Hons.), BFA, B.Li.Sc & B.Ed programs in various disciplines under the faculties of Arts, Fine Arts and Visual Arts. The basic eligibility for BA & BFA is a pass in 10+2 with relevant subjects. For B.Li.Sc and B.Ed courses, a Graduation degree is a must.
Admission is completely based on the marks in the qualifying examination. RBU releases the course-wise provisional merit lists for the shortlisted candidates.
Merit List Preparation: For B.A (Hons.) in Rabindra Sangeet, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Dance and Drama subjects, the merit list will be prepared on the basis of score in Admission test (out of 80) and marks in 10+2 (out of 20). The admission test will consist of 50 marks for Practical and 30 for Theory.

M.A, MFA & M.Li.Sc courses are offered in various disciplines. A relevant UG degree is a must to secure admission in MA course. BFA/ BVA degree holders can apply for MFA while B.Li.Sc or any Master’s degree holders are eligible to apply for the M.Li.Sc program.

The Faculty of Arts, Fine Arts and Visual Arts also offers courses at the doctoral level. Those students who have passed Master’s degree with 55% marks in the relevant discipline are eligible to apply for M.Phil & Ph.D. programs. Admission is offered on the basis of Written Test followed by an interview. Candidates have to score minimum 40% marks in the written test and 45% marks in the interview.

RBU M.Phil & Ph.D. Entrance Test: Admission is based on Written test (total 100 marks) of three hours duration followed by an interview. The written test will consist of two papers of 50 marks each.
First paper (Common Research Aptitude Test) is common for the faculties of Arts & Fine Arts and it is based on Research Methodology. This paper will consist total 50 MCQs of one marks each for the duration of one and a half hour.
Second paper will be subject oriented. It will consist Objective and short answer type questions for 10 and 20 marks respectively and an essay writing test (minimum 300 words) for 20 marks.
The Directorate of Distance Education, Rabindra Bharati University, was established during the academic session of 2001-2003 with the approval of Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal. RBUDDE imparts education through Open and Distance Learning System and serves as a platform of guidance for the students who might have been deprived of education.
The admission to MA (Geography) and MSW have only limited seats and admissions are offered on the basis of merit only. DDE also offers Diploma in Tagore Literature.

The distance center of RBU Kolkata offers major PG courses, i.e., MA and MSW.
