Located in the state of West Bengal, Sidho Kanho Birsha University is quickly gaining reputation among the best Universities of the state. It offers a number of programmes at the postgraduate and research level, including B.Ed., M.A., and Ph.D. Applications are accepted online through the official website of the university, and candidates have a period of around two weeks to submit their applications.
The selection process is purely merit based for the postgraduate courses, though an entrance examination may be conducted at the discretion of the University. An entrance examination as well as viva voce / personal interview is conducted for admission to the Research programme. Students with valid score in GATE, SET or UGC NET are exempted from the entrance exam. Those students have to appear only in the personal interview round conducted by the University.

The selection process consists of in-depth analysis of marks obtained at the UG level, and the merit list is prepared. An entrance examination may be conducted for certain PG courses based on the number of applicants, seats available, and discretion of the university. Selected students will be called for the counselling process after publication of merit list.
After the release of the merit list, candidates must provide all original documents for verification at the time of admission counseling, and will only be given the final offer of admission thereafter. Caste certificate is necessary for reserved candidates. Payment of fees thereafter is required to complete the admission process.
Reservation is in accordance with the rules of the Government of West Bengal. In general, preference is given to Home University students, who make up around 60% of the intake.
The University also offers Research programmes in various subjects. Application forms are released following an official notification from the University, and candidates are given a short period of time thereafter to apply if interested. The details of the admission to this course are as follows.

The selection process to the Ph.D. programme consists of an entrance examination followed by a personal interview.
A merit list is released thereafter on the basis of the performance in the entrance examination as well as the viva voce / interview. Performance at the Master’s level or other qualifying degree may be considered when selecting candidates.
Those who have been selected as per the merit list are required to appear for admission counseling, where all relevant documents are verified. This includes marks cards of all qualifying examinations and degrees, and caste certificate if applying under reserved category. The offer of admission will be given thereafter, and payment of the stipulated fee amount is required to confirm admission.
Ques. What are the courses offered by Sidho Kanho Birsha University?
Ans. The university offers multiple programs and courses at bachelor’s, postgraduate, and research levels. The bachelor’s courses are limited, however, courses in the higher level are more. The courses range from M.A , M.Sc, B.Ed, PG Diploma, Certification, MBA, B.Sc (Hons.) to PG Diploma.
Ques. What is the fees structure for the courses at Sidho Kanho Birsha University?
Ans. The annual fees structure could range from INR 3,500 for Certification courses to INR 14,000 for PG Diploma courses. While M.A and M.Sc courses range between INR 3,400 to INR 4,800, PG Diploma and MBA courses are INR 10,00 and INR 40,000 respectively.
Ques. What are the eligibility criteria for the B.Ed course?
Ans. The B.Ed course requires an aggregate of minimum 50% at UG level from a recognised university. There is a 5% relaxation for reserved categories. In addition, an applicant should be less than 37 years of age by the end of June of the year in which they are applying for the B.Ed course.
Ques. What is the selection process at Sidho Kanho Birsha University?
Ans. There is an in-depth analysis of the UG level marks obtained by the applicant. After which there is a merit list published, on the basis of which selected candidates are called for counselling. For some PG level courses entrance exams may be conducted at the discretion of the university. For research level studies, students have to sit for entrance examinations unless they have cleared exams such as NET/SET/GATE.
Ques. How are the placements of the college ?
Ans. The placements offered by Sidho Kanho Birsha University are decent and average. Some of the courses are given more priority such as Diploma courses. However, there are general placement drives and there is a placement cell within the college that gives placement opportunities to the students.
Ques. When will the cutoffs for this year be out (academic year) ?
Ans. According to the official notice circulated by the college, the admission application process for M.Sc and M.A Economics are currently going on. However, the application deadlines for B.Sc and M.Sc are over. As for the PhD admissions, an official notice will be circulated in the coming days after the completion of NET/SET/GATE or equivalent examination.

Ans. The university doesn’t offer any internal scholarships or financial aids. However, the state government of West Bengal offers two types of scholarships. One is for the reserved categories such as the ST,SC, OBC students. The other one is for other minority communities.

Ans. There are no hostel facilities available at the university. As for the campus life, there is a lot of scope for extracurricular activities. The sports department of the college is also very active and encouraging and the college administration has given a huge playing field for the students.
