Northeastern Illinois University was established as a teacher training institution and has changed its academic structure to acquire a status of a full-fledged university. Currently, admission is offered to students in more than 70 undergraduate and graduate programs at Northeastern Illinois University across arts, sciences, education, and business fields. It is a public institution, instructing all its courses on-campus through the academic intakes of fall, spring and summer. The student body represents nearly 100 countries around the world, showcasing a multicultural environment of learning.

With an acceptance rate of nearly 61%, the instute represents a moderately selective admission policy for all students. The university has an enrollment of nearly 7,500 students among which the number of undergraduate enrollment is over 5,200 and that of graduate students is 1,700. International students need to submit 30 USD as a non-refundable application fee. Northeastern Illinois University Programs

The programs at NEI are offered along the levels of of bachelor’s, master’s, certificate and licensure/endorsement courses. At present, the institute offers more than 60 undergraduate major and minor courses and 37 master’s programs. There are honors program for academically prospective students having an ACT score of 25 or minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (~89-90%).

The academic majors and minors are categorized under three schools namely, College Of Arts And Sciences, Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education and College of Graduate Studies and Research. NEIU also offers International Exchange programs cooperatively with over 40 partner universities. The Student Center for Science Engagement offers mentoring, tutoring, professional development, summer research opportunities, scientific conferences specifically for science students.

Northeastern Illinois University Campus and Accommodations

The institute has five campuses providing different programs and services to the students. The main campus is located in a residential area on the Northwest side of Chicago. The other 4 locations are:

  • Jacob H. Carruthers Center– a focal point for the African-American community, this campus provides programs for Inner City Studies and prepares the student to study the interests of the residents of Chicago along with participating in the rich Afro-American cultures. 
  • El Centro– this campus provides a bachelor’s degree in majors like Computer Science, Justice Studies, Social Work, and Special Education. The campus is equipped with modern facilities like technology-enhanced classrooms, laboratories, student lounge and study spaces, etc.
  • University Center of Lake County– located in Grayslake, Illinois, the campus is dedicated to transfer students and degree completion.
  • Center of College Access and Success– it is one of the largest schools for improvement organization in Chicago. It develops partnerships involving the entire community to help students succeed academically and socially.

The campus offers a large number of student resources including academic support, career counseling, clubs and organizations, extra-curricular activities etc. Students get a variety of options like swimming, cycling, high ropes, sock climbing, Zumba and many more to stay fit. Moreover, the university manifests a vibrant learning and research community.

Northeastern Illinois University Accommodation

Northeastern provides on-campus student housing facility for local, national, as well as international students. The Nest, the first residence hall of the university is to the west of the main campus. There are 2-bedroom and 4-bedroom options. All the rooms are well-furnished with shared bathroom facility. Other amenities provided includes fitness center with strength and equipment and cardio machines, recreation center with arcade games and billiards, furnished apartments, private bedrooms and bathrooms.  

Students enjoy fully equipped kitchens with appliances, on-site laundry services, and basic utilities. The student housing is at a walking distance from the campus. Residents are offered with easy access to campus bookstore and library. Applicants need to submit a 50 USD non-refundable housing application fee and a 250 USD security deposit while submitting their application. Rooms are allocated on first-come first-serve basis. Interested students can also look for off-campus student housing in USA.
