The interdisciplinary Marine and Coastal Science major highlights the terrestrial-marine interface, coastal issues, and human impacts on the marine environment.
- Students develop a broad foundation in marine and coastal sciences while focusing on Coastal Environmental Processes or Marine Environmental Chemistry.
- The Coastal Environmental Processes emphasis concentrates on environments and systems in the coastal zone, and the strong physical-biological connection that exists here; the Marine Environmental Chemistry emphasis spotlights major themes in marine chemistry, geochemistry, the carbon cycle and contaminant fate and transport.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A high school diploma (or equivalent)
- Students who are not residents of California must earn a GPA of 3.40 or higher.
- SAT/ACT scores
- The University of California Board of Regents unanimously approved the suspension of the standardized test requirement (ACT/SAT) for all California freshman applicants until fall 2024.
- If students’ native language and school language of instruction prior to their study in the United States were not English, then they must demonstrate English proficiency. They can do so by submitting TOELF/IELTS score reports.
Indian Eligibility:
- Students must complete their standard XII years of education and sit for 10th and 12th-year board/state examinations.
Scores Required
SAT/ACT scores are made optional until fall 2024.
