- The Master of Music, Music Education Specialization is designed for elementary and secondary music teachers who already hold a K-12 State music-teaching license.
- Specifically, this program is designed to inspire and develop the next generation of leaders in the field of music education by developing and applying scholarly research skills in the field of music education, the in-depth study of advanced pedagogical expertise, and the impact of contemporary learning theory on K-12 music education.
- In this program, successful students will have the opportunity to gain content knowledge regarding the history and philosophy of music education, an understanding of how quantitative, qualitative, and historical music research is conducted, advanced skills in music analysis and interpretation, and a contemporary understanding of the pedagogy of music teaching and learning.
- Students will also have the opportunity to participate in CSU music ensembles to continue to develop as musical artists.
- Additionally, students are expected to be full-time students in residence and will most likely be given the opportunity to teach or assist with undergraduate music education coursework depending upon the level of expertise and program demands.
- The MMus program consists of 30 credits.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- A GPA of at least 3.25/4.0 is required to be eligible for the program.
Indian Student Eligibility:
- Students must complete an undergraduate degree with first-class in a relevant field from a highly ranked university in India.
- Or, students completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
Scores Required
Submission of GRE scores is not required.

- Resume/CV: It is the outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
- Three Letter of Recommendation: Letter of recommendation (combination of professional and academic recommenders) which includes information about the student, their connection with the person they are recommending, their qualification, and the specific skills they have.
- Statement of Purpose: This statement must describe your qualifications and the objectives of your intended educational program.
- Personal Statement: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
- Official Transcripts: Applicants who have attended and/or received degrees from institutions outside the US must provide certified copies and certified English translations of transcripts or records of all previous post-secondary education and of all degrees conferred.
- Essay: A narrative essay that considers a current issue facing the field of music education in K-12 schools in the United States (ideally between 5-10 pages in length).
- Video: A 35-45 minute Music Teaching video (including a lesson plan or narrative description including lesson objectives and relevant contextual information).
- ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.
