  • Gerontology is the scientific study of the processes and phenomena of aging. The Gerontology Program's mission is to improve the lives of middle-aged and older individuals; provide training, consultation, and other services; and conduct research.
  • The Gerontology Program is enhanced by the Gerontology Faculty Interest Group, the Center for Successful Aging, and a chapter of Sigma Phi Omega, The National Academic Honor and Professional Society in Gerontology. Students in the Gerontology Program are eligible for membership in Sigma Phi Omega.
  • The Center for Successful Aging is part of a complex of centers and organizations on the campus of California State University, Long Beach that is involved with aging-related issues. The Center is a transdisciplinary academic/community partnership to promote collaborative innovations in education, practice, policy development, and research.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

  • Students must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, be in good standing at the last college attended, having a passing score on the CSU Writing Proficiency Examination (which may be completed during the first semester in residence), and have an overall 3.0 grade average in the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of the degree.
  • A student with less than the required GPA and who meets all other requirements may be admitted conditionally, with the expectation that the student will maintain a B average.
