- The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Miami University was founded in 1948. The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology offers a wide range of academic opportunities for students interested in the field of communication disorders. Communication disorders include many areas such as hearing loss, delayed speech and language development, stuttering, hoarseness, and problems with articulation. The department offers undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to provide individual speech and hearing services in the Miami University Speech and Hearing clinic, conduct original research, participate in national conferences, and obtain field experience anywhere in the country.
- The graduate program in Speech Pathology (M.S. or M.A.) prepares students for a career as a speech-language pathologist. Graduate students in Miami’s program develop both theoretical and applied scientific skills in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of communication disorders. Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Have a Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from an accredited institution (CSD majors or non-majors)
- As part of their undergraduate program (CSD majors or non-majors), a student must take at least one course from each of the following areas and ALL COURSES MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE FALL OF 2021:
- biological science (biology, physiology, zoology)
- physical science physics or chemistry
- college-level quantitative statistics
- social science (1 course is required - this is a change from previous years)
- behavioral science
- quantitative research methods course (This must be a stand-alone course; independent study involving empirical research or working in a research lab DOES NOT fulfill the requirement)
- a designated undergraduate course in neurology, neuroscience, or neurobiology (this course may be taken in a CSD department or another department)
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.3 and a minimum GPA of 3.4 in the communication sciences undergraduate degree are recommended.
- For this application cycle (students applying during the Fall to begin their coursework in Fall 2021), the GRE will NOT be used during the selection process. This change is in direct response to COVID 19 and in an effort to decrease the burden on the prospective student.
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- International students hailing from non-English speaking countries must submit proof of English proficiency. Students may provide score reports of TOEFL/IELTS/… or any equivalent test with at least a minimum score as per program guidelines to prove English proficiency.
- In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Miami is accepting the Duolingo English Test for the 2021-2022 application cycle as an alternative to the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test. Miami’s Duolingo English Test scores must include the subscores. If students took the test prior to July 15, 2019, they will need to retake the test.
