Department of Management Studies, IIT Madras is a business school under Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and popularly known as DoMS. The department was established in 2004, even though an MBA was taught in IIT Madras since 2001.
The institute was first of all the IITs to introduce MBA studies for candidates of all streams like BA, BSc and BCom apart from engineering stream. This department also offers MS and PhD in Entrepreneurship along with an executive MBA program. Partnering with IIT Kanpur and IIM Calcutta, it provides a multi-institutional PGPEX-VLM, a diploma degree for visionary manufacturing leaders.

Eligibility Criteria 2022
The eligibility criteria in IIT Madras for MBA is broadly categorised with respect to regular candidates, sponsored candidates and foreign nationals or non-resident Indians.
Regular candidates
- Candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree from a UGC recognised university with a minimum of 60% (General and 50% (SCT/SC/PD).
- Students in the final year of graduation need to fulfil all the requirements with provisional certificates and should submit provisional certificates within 2 months of program commencement.
- A valid CAT score.
- IIT graduates with a CGPA of a minimum of 8 out of 10 are exempted from CAT score.
Non-Resident Indians/ Foreign Nationals
- Graduates from a UGC recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks.
- A valid GMAT score is required.
- Final year students are required to submit provisional certificates.
Sponsored Candidates
Sponsored candidates are required to meet the eligibility criteria based on two aspects. That is, whether they are defence personnel or sponsored by the company in which they are employed, presently.
Defence Personnel
- Graduates from a government-recognised university with at least 55% marks in any discipline.
- Defence officers are to receive admission through government agencies as they are exempted from any national-level entrance tests.
Company Sponsored
- Valid score in CAT as conducted by IIMs.
- Graduate in any discipline from a recognised university with at least 60% marks.
- 2-3 years of work experience in the sponsored company.
- Sponsored applications to be forwarded by employers through appropriate channels.
Admission procedure for MBA in IIT Madras 2022
The admission process for IIT Madras MBA admission takes place in three stages: application, shortlisting (based on application) and WAT-PI for final selection as below -
- Application
The application process is completely online and takes place through the University’s MBA admission portal. The admission page will lead students to the common admission portal for MBA at the four IITs- Delhi, Roorkee, Madras and Mumbai. In the case of students applying for all these four IITs, the application process can be easier and faster.

- At first, new users have to register with email and other personal details.
- During registration, all the details and communications will be done and sent to your email address.
- Post, this application process will begin with filling up personal details.
- Enter all the academic qualifications.
- Pay the application fees.
Note : Retain a copy of the application with you in a printable pdf format. Prior to the beginning of application students need to make sure they have a valid email address and an active phone number. As these details will be required throughout the application procedure. Also, students need to keep their work experience and academic certificates handy.
- Shortlisting
The applications are shortlisted based on the composite score calculated giving due weightage to each of the following aspects:
- CAT score
- Academic records
- Work experience
- Academic diversity
- Gender
As the shortlisting is done based on a composite score, categorised relaxations are also maintained as per the norms by the Government of India.
- WAT-PI (FINAL Selection)
The candidates who are shortlisted are selected to appear in the Written Ability Test (WAT) as well as Personal Interview (PI). These are to evaluate academic knowledge, teamwork and communication skills. The venue is usually set nearest to the place of stay of the candidate as in:
- Delhi
- Mumbai
- Roorkee
- Kolkata
- Chennai
The final selection is based on a score obtained by candidates with respect to the weightage given to the following:
- Written Ability Test
- Personal Interview
- Composite scores
- Other forms of achievements
Note for students: The shortlisted candidates are usually called for Personal Interview at the mentioned venue except the Foreign Nationals or NRI candidates. Such candidates have to take the interview online.
Placement
The placement cell of the institute is extremely active and strives to be a facilitator between companies and the students. The flagship MBA program constituted the major proportion of the placement drive. The average CTC stood at 12.44 lakhs per annum (INR) for the MBA 2017-19 batch. The M.S. (by Research) and Ph.D programs also witnessed an impressive placement season with an average CTC of INR 12.79 lakh per annum for the M.S. (by Research) programme.
The list of new recruiters included AG Facilities Solutions, Chalo, Kantar Analytics, Fractal Analytics, Micron Technologies, OSG Analytics, Trexquant, Visual BI, William O’ Neil, ZS Associates and Zycus. The season also witnessed several regular recruiters at DoMS like Accenture, Amazon, Cisco, Cognizant, Dell, Ford and McKinsey strengthening their existing long-term ties with the Department.
The MBA Batch of 2017-19 at DoMS consists of 65 students from across India. 63 students participated in the placement drive while 2 opted out. The batch has students coming from diverse backgrounds like engineering, commerce, hotel management, arts and pharmaceutical science. The average work experience of the batch is 19.5 months in diverse sectors like Banking, IT, Finance, Education, FMCG, etc.
