University of Guelph: An Underrated Gem for the Med School Hopeful

MW
6.2 /10

I received a full ride to the school (scholarships based on grades), I liked the upper year course selection (ex. Cardiology course), the campus and city were close to home and familiar to me, and I liked the amount of research at the school. I applied to five schools with similar degrees (all biology) and had a 96% average in grade twelve.

Course Curriculum :

Good, but I wish the first year was less general and more specific to 'Biomedical Science', it's currently very broad and not too dissimilar to high school.

Exams :

No exams were required to be admitted to this course. There are no exams required for admission to universities in Canada. My acceptance into the program was based on my grades, and I received early acceptance. There was an optional supplementary application that helped with scholarships, and asked questions about finances, homelife, etc.

Placement :

During orientation week, we were shown an infographic about where Biomedical graduates went after they completed their degree, and almost all went on to pursue secondary education. Thus, it's hard to say what the job placement percentage is.

Internship :

Yes! I was offered a campus job but turned it down as I didn't believe I would have time for it. Campus jobs are offered based on answers from the supplementary application and are given based on financial need.

Events :

There are daily events in the university centre, and every holiday is celebrated some way by the school. Sporting events are also important.

Fees :

I received a grade based scholarship, which was based only on my final percentage in grade twelve (top six classes). It paid for my entire year. There are some international scholarships, but it's extremely crucial to fill out the supplementary application or you will NOT be considered for any scholarships!

Scholarship :

I also received OSAP, which has covered my living costs.

Examination Structure :

Good, chemistry and biology exams are multiple choice, and the calculus exams are a combination. They are relatively fair exams!

Faculty :

Good, I am currently an executive member of Biomedical Science Student Association, and there is a lot of support from this group and from the college of biological science. We receive emails from the Dean fairly regularly about volunteer information and clubs, which is very helpful!

Hostel :

I decided to go with off campus residence, as my brother had bad experiences at his university in residence. I feel a bit lonely living off campus and feel like people in residence have had it easier in regards to making friends.
