SGPGIMS Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must have a degree in MD/MS/MDS/DM/M.Ch in the specific subjects or Diplomat of National Board of Examination recognized by the Medical Council of India.
- Applicants may have a master’s degree in science from a recognized University/ Institution in health science/ Allied Sciences / Related Physical or Engineering Sciences
- All above must be completed with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade point/CGPA.
- International student applicants must have a degree in the eligible subjects recognized by the Medical Council of India/UGC for medical/non-medical students. Applicants must have an overall IELTS score of at-least 7 with not less than 6.5 in any of the 4 subtests or an equivalent score in TOEFL for proficiency in the English language
SGPGIMS Ph.D. Admission Guidelines
- Advertisement/notification about Ph.D. will be notified after releasing of CSIR/UGC/NET examination in both offline and online mode.
- Students have to visit the official website of SGPGIMS and click on “admission notice for Ph.D.” to proceed further
- Register with email-ID and proceed further filling in relevant details and upload all the documents.
- After filling in all the details the registration fees is to be paid and click on “submit”. The application can be submitted in both offline and online mode.
- Admission will be made by the faculty member by written examination and interview by Dean’s committee, reading the thesis of the applicants and interested faculty will enrol him/her under them.
- The letter of offer will be given to selected candidates by the research cell of the University.
- The selected candidates must join within 15 days from the date of issuing of the letter.
Candidates are enrolled based on four categories-
- Category 1: Applicants who fulfill essential qualifications and have a letter of award for fellowship and contingency by any Government funding agency for a minimum period of three years.
- Category 2: Applicants s who fulfilled essential qualifications and have passed the national level written examination conducted by the Government agencies but do not have their own fellowship may be enrolled if they are working in an extramural project funded by Government / UN agencies as JRF / SRF / Research Assistant.
- Category 3: Applicants s having Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from Government funding agencies / extramural projects funded by Government funding agencies may be enrolled in the Ph.D. program within six months of having obtained fellowship, but will not be eligible for any fellowship or contingency from the Institute at any time.
- Category 4: Applicants can take admission through national level examination (theory & interview).

SGPGIMS Ph.D. Course Details
The institute offers Ph.D. under the following disciplines-

The minimum duration of a Ph.D. will be 3 years. The maximum duration will be 5 years. Each faculty is allowed to register a maximum of 2 students per year with the upper limit of 6 per guide at any given time.
Course Requirements:
- The candidate has to undertake course work. The course work shall be treated as pre-PhD preparation and must include a course on research methodology which may include quantitative methods and computer application, which may also involve reviewing the published research in the relevant field.
- The candidate has published/accepted 2 original papers in peer-reviewed indexed journals with his/her name as a first or second author.
- The thesis should be submitted by the candidate within 06 months from the date of the DC meeting permitting the student to write the thesis. The thesis should be in a format approved by the Institute. The thesis will be graded as Thesis accepted or Thesis rejected.
- If the thesis is accepted viva-voce examination to be conducted. Minor changes/correction of typographical errors/correction of references/reanalysis of data/clarifications/retyping/correction in figures suggested by the examiners should be incorporated.
- If the Thesis is rejected If two of the three examiners recommend rejection, the thesis will be considered as rejected. If one examiner recommends rejection, the thesis will be sent to a fourth examiner from the list of approved examiners. If the fourth examiner recommends rejection, then the thesis will be taken as rejected. If he/she accepts, then the viva-voce examination can be held.

Ques. What is the minimum attendance requirement for a Ph.D. student at SGPGIMS?
Ans. The candidates are required to sign on all working days except when he/she is on duty/sanctioned leave as per the leave rules.
A candidate, who is pursuing course work as a part of his/her Ph.D. Program is expected to have full attendance in each course. However, a maximum of 30% attendance may be condoned by the Dean.
Ques. What is the maximum number of Ph.D. students a guide can take at SGPGIMS?
Ans. A guide can take 6 students at any given time. A student can submit the research proposal in their desired area and the respective subject guide can choose and evaluate for the final selection of candidates.
Ques. Does SGPGIMS provide any kind of scholarship to its Ph.D. students?
Ans. Yes, SGPGIMS provides scholarships. The college provides a 100% fee concession for students who have an annual family income of less than ?60,000.
Ques. Does SGPGIMS provide hostel accommodation to Ph.D. students?
Ans. The enrolled Ph.D. students will be provided a hostel on availability. The student has to follow the rules of the hostel prescribed from time to time by the institute.
