Government College of Engineering, Salem-11, started during the Third Five-year plan in1966 is located on a 162 hectares site surrounded by hills. GCE, Salem was then the Third Engineering Institution in Tamil Nadu. The first batch of students was selected for the academic year 1966-1967. The institution offers 6 UG and 6 PG programs.

GCE offers hostel facilities to its students with a capacity of 569 seats for boys and 279 for girls. The principal administers it, the ex-officio warden with the assistance of the associate warden, hostel superintendents, deputy wardens, and resident tutors. At the end of each year, membership is terminated and the rooms with furniture, fittings, etc., shall be handed over in fact by the members. Residing in the hostel for any period does not confer any right of membership for the next period. The deputy warden shall make allotment of rooms under orders of the warden. Leaving and expected time of return.
