Hooghly Women’s college got established in 1949 in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. It was earlier affiliated to the University of Calcutta until 1962 but later turned its affiliation to the University of Burdwan. It is the sixth academic institution and the first women’s college in the district. It is also the largest Women’s College of Burdwan University. It is a government-sponsored college and is accredited with B++ grade in NAAC. The institute is UGC recognized and consists of various courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce like BA (Hons.), BA (General), B.Sc. (General) and B.Sc. (Hons.) under a number of specializations.

Admissions into Hooghly Women’s College are based upon merit marks obtained in 10+2. A student shall check their eligibility criteria before applying for any course. The selection process is entirely based upon academic merit.

The placement cell is least engaged and average. One has to strive on their own to get good placement. Internship is not a part of the course. According to NIRF, no students were placed in the past 3 years. Students have to search for jobs after they pass out of college. But owing to competition in the market, more than 50% of the students go for higher studies. 848 out of 1673 students in the past three years have opted for higher education in the college itself.
