Master of Arts [M.A] (Oriental Studies - Islamic Studies)
Field of Study:
This course is unique because, in addition to the MA, it offers in-depth and specialized knowledge and skills for the scientific and communicative handling of religion, culture, and history of the Islamic world and the languages and literature of the Middle East / North Africa.
This course offers a specialization in the following areas:
- History of Faith and Religious Practice in Islam
- History of the Muslim States and Societies
- Contemporary history of the Near and Middle East
- oriental literature (Arabic, Turkish, Persian)
- History of Science and Education in the Islamic World
- Arabic linguistics

Tuition Fees
Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) does not charge tuition fees. The students must only pay a semester contribution fee of about $401 per semester. This fee includes free use of public transport in North-Rhine Westphalia, and reduced prices for food and beverages in the cafeteria (Mensa) and canteens.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- a completed B.A. degree in Oriental Studies / Islamic Studies or a closely related subject (Middle East studies, Arabic studies, Asian studies, etc.) with a focus on Islamic studies in scope of at least 71 CP.
- Proof of advanced-level Arabic skills that are comparable to the knowledge after completing language course module 2 in the B.A. course in Oriental Studies / Islamic Studies and at least basic knowledge of a second Oriental language comparable to the module “Second Islamic Cultural Language”.
- Participation in an obligatory counseling interview, which is carried out by the academic advisor course advisors at the institute before the start of the course.
- Furthermore, proof of the Latinum or Graecum or Hebraicum is required. This proof must be provided until admission to the M.A. thesis. Knowledge of English is required and French, insofar as they are necessary to understand the specialist literature. For certain knowledge of Spanish or Greek is recommended.
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Knowledge of English at least at level B2
- Knowledge of a second Islamic cultural language at level A2 (Turkish, Persian)
- Most of the courses at the RUB are held in German. Students must therefore have sufficient knowledge of German and provide evidence by obtaining one of the following language certificates:
- TestDaF with at least 16 points within an examination
- DSH (level 2 or 3)
- German Language Diploma - DSD - II
- ZOP or Goethe Certificate C2 from the Goethe Institute
- KDS or GDS from the Goethe Institute
- ÖSD language diploma C1
- telc German C1 Hochschule
- Assessment test (examination part German)
Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
