Master of Science [M.S] (Applied informatics - major in engineering or media informatics)
Field of Study:
In the course of study, advanced knowledge from computer science and from the focus and application subjects is imparted. Compared to the Bachelor's degree, which is fundamental and method-oriented, the Master's degree is research-oriented. In particular, the master’s degree enables independent scientific work and lays the foundation for further development of the subject. The students can choose between four areas of application:
- Distributed, reliable systems
- Intelligent technical systems and scientific computing
- Interactive and Cooperative Systems
- Information engineering

Tuition Fees
There are no tuition fees at the University of Duisburg-Essen. All students are, however, subject to a student body and social contribution fee per semester.
The social and student body contribution for the summer and winter semesters 2021 amounts to a total of $774.86.
The amount is made up as follows:
- Mobility contribution (ticket): $506.82, of which $367.88 for the VRR semester ticket and $138.94 for the NRW ticket
- Social contribution for the Studierendenwerk: $229.96
- Student body fee: $38.08.
The social and student body contribution is not to be paid before enrollment! Students will be informed about the payment modalities upon registration.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A bachelor's degree in applied computer science or an equivalent or comparable bachelor's degree in a computer science course is a prerequisite for admission. The suitability of the applicants is usually determined when the overall grade is 2.5 or better. The examination board decides on exceptions.
- Graduates of the bachelor's degree "Applied Computer Science (Engineering and Media Informatics)" with an overall grade of 2.5 or better will be enrolled without a prior examination. All other applicants must submit their documents to the examination board before enrolling. This is where the test of equivalence to the aforementioned Bachelor "Applied Computer Science" takes place and, if necessary, the necessary determination of suitability
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following requirements:
- Citizens of a country outside the EU with a foreign university entrance qualification must pass the "German language test for university entrance" (DSH 2 level) or the TestDaF (TDN 4) before starting their studies.
- Educational residents (people who have obtained their higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad) do not require any special proof of German language skills.
