K. Thameemul Ansari Ameen has been working as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department at Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He has done BE in Mechanical Engineering and Masters in Product Design and Development. He has been associated with Meenakshi Sudharshan College since 2013 and holds an amazing 8+ years of experience in the industrial world. Being a Faculty at MSEC, what are your responsibilities towards the Students?

"My responsibility is to educate our students on latest technologies and prepare them for corporate world"

As an Assistant Professor of Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, my prime responsibility is to upgrade myself and in return share my knowledge with my students. And the ambiance of my responsibility is not limited to teaching only as I need to play the role of a mentor, a friend and a philosopher for my students whenever they get stuck somewhere in their studies or projects. Lastly, evaluating students' knowledge and skills through assessment exercises is my other responsibility.

How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"By being a good listener, communicator and trustworthy person for them"

To maintain a healthy relationship with my students, I regularly interact with them not only in classrooms but outside classes as well to know about their interests, strengths and issues they might be facing in academics. And I listen to them very carefully while interacting to understand things from their point of view. And when it comes to my fellow faculties, I ensure my availability and support for them while working together on any task and have also given them an open and trustworthy communication environment.

How do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

"We teach them by using pre-recorded videos and case studies as examples to relate any concept"

For the purpose of including industry oriented and practical perspective towards subjects, we use an amalgamation of different techniques like we teach our students using prototypes, presentations, explanatory videos and real time case studies as examples. 

Which best practices are offered by your department to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

"Activities like community programs, presentation sessions and hackathons are organized by us"

Our college organizes an annual event every year where numerous activities including paper presentations, project presentations, mock interviews and group discussions are conducted to give a perfect platform to students to utilize and showcase their unique skills and talents and make them more confident. In addition to this, community welfare activities and coding competitions like Hackathons are also organised by us from time to time. 

How do you strategize and upgrade the curriculum of your college to make it befitting for the students?

"It is regularly updated to involve developments of corporate sector in the form or new courses"

We update the curriculum of our college every 4 years to include expectations of the corporate world in the form of new programs, training and internships for students. Also industry experts and eminent academicians are involved during its review process.

How does your department prepare students for higher education and placement?

"We prepare them for the industries and higher education by organizing rigorous training and experts lectures"

Our college does have a dedicated Training and Placement Cell to train our students for the actual interview process, enhance their overall personality and make them ready for the corporate world. And this cell organizes different kinds of training including training on soft skills, communication skills and programming languages. As a result, many of our students are placed in well reputed organizations. Also the faculty members of our institute including Department Head motivate students for higher education and arrange expert lectures and Alumni Talks as and when required.

How do you prepare your students to deal with the competition of the outside world?

"By providing them suitable platforms and opportunities to explore their passion and skill set"

We prepare the students of our college to face this world with more courage and confidence by giving them multiple opportunities to explore their areas of interest and encouraging them to participate in appropriate competitions.

Which extracurricular activities are organized by your college to enhance the skills of students?

"A diverse range of sports activities and cultural fests are conducted by us"

We firmly believe that co-curricular activities are equally important as academics for the overall personal and professional development of students. And hence a wide variety of sports activities and cultural events are organized by us on a regular basis.

What challenges are you facing to uplift the education quality of your department?

"Students inattentive attitude towards their studies is the biggest issue we need to tackle with"

The major roadblocks in front of us currently is to deal with the non-attentive and neglected behaviour of students’ in classes and absence of interest in them towards their studies.

When you joined MSEC college, what was your vision for it and how are you trying to achieve the same?

"My objective was to provide finest quality and job oriented education to students"

When I joined Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, my vision at that time was to provide the best quality education, amenities, guidance and learning windows to students by utilising my knowledge and experience of the industrial and academic world.

How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practices of industry?

"It comprises of latest industry and employment oriented programs and practical exposure"

We put in a lot of effort and do the thorough research of industrial development, demands before designing and updating the curriculum of our institute. And it is backed by the latest technologies being used in industries nowadays along with modern design and analysis software, and finest training programs and research opportunities. 

How does your college enhance the faculties skills and prepare them as per industry standards?

"They are trained and upskilled through faculty development programs and appropriate trainings"

The faculty members of our college are trained on latest technologies and educational practices through faculty development programs and periodical training which are conducted generally in industry oriented labs.

What approaches do you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?

"We use advanced ICT tools and techniques to educate our students beyond curriculum"

For the purpose of teaching students beyond textbooks and curriculum, we use Information Communication Technology such as Google Classroom, Video Conferencing and pre-recorded videos along with prototypes to strengthen students' basic knowledge of subjects.

In my opinion, our relationship with our industry partners are our main pillars of strength as they help us a lot in enhancing industrial exposure for our students by giving opportunities to them to work on real time projects. And these relationships I believe can be enhanced by signing more MOUs.

I would suggest to my dear students to identify their strengths by self-exploration and set realistic goals for themselves with the support of their Teachers, Parents and well-wishers. Stay sincere and dedicated to your goals and give your 100% efforts to achieve them.
