Dr. Arvind Kumar is the Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at RTC Institute of Technology. He obtained his Ph.D. from Agartala in 2020. He has published 04 SCI indexed, 05 Scopus indexed journal papers and 03 book chapters. He is having more than 9 years of teaching experience in reputed AICTE-affiliated engineering colleges.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

"To take care of admission process, students education needs and department tasks"

Being a faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department at RTC Institute, I am responsible to teach my students in an efficient manner. Also, I need to mentor them as and when required, participate in department activities, and assist students during admission time. Apart from all this, I contribute on a regular basis to enhance the curriculum through activities like research paper writing, participation in international conferences, project writing, etc.

What do you see as your college’s greatest strengths and how can it be enhanced?

"Our location, infra and faculty members constitute us"

The strength of our college lies in our faculty members who are highly qualified, well trained and technically sound. Next comes our infrastructure where we provide the best facilities to our students in the form of excellent laboratories, and state-of-the-art libraries, and we are situated in the lap of nature which comes as an extra benefit for us. The performance of our department and college can be enhanced by integrating faculty members and technical staff with industries so that their skills can be upgraded as per the latest industrial needs.

Which approaches will you be introducing apart from the curriculum to teach students?

"I am working on introducing new programs for the overall development of our students"

I would like to implement some subjects and courses in each semester apart from the curriculum for our students benefit. Those subjects will be based on

  • Presentation Skills include Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Workplace Etiquette, Body Language, Self Confidence and a Positive Attitude.
  • Employability skills include Leadership, Problem-solving, Teamwork, Reliability and Self-management Planning.
  • Technical Skills including Artificial Intelligence, Mechatronics and automation. 

How does your department enhance the skills of its faculty and prepare them as per industry standards?

"Through regular industrial visits and training programs as per requirement"

The Department of our college motivates its faculty members for regular visits to the industries, to actively participate in their problems and try to solve them. This practice will surely enhance their knowledge as per industry standards.

How does the curriculum of your department ensure the best practices of the industry?

"It is drafted and updated as per university guidelines"

Our College is affiliated to the Jharkhand University of Technology (JUT), and we follow the curriculum designed by the University itself. Also then, I will suggest removing all outraged subjects and replacing them with the latest updated subject which is currently in demand in the industry.

What was your vision and how were you trying to achieve the same?

"To cheer our students for a bright future and teachers for a better academic experience"

When I joined this institute my vision was to motivate the students towards their careers and future prospects. Apart from that my objective was also to encourage our fellow colleagues towards creating a better academic and research environment.

And to achieve my goals, I have organized a hands-on workshop for students of all departments including ME, EEE, ECE and CSE IT Branch and an FDP (Faculty Development Programme) on Manufacturing and Automation for our faculty members. 

Which challenges did you face to uplift the quality of education of your department?

"Lack of innovative ambiance is definitely a hindrance"

The main challenge which I faced and experienced is that there is somewhat a lack of an innovative environment in our department, which is also becoming a hindrance for us in giving quality technical education to our students. 

What extracurricular activities are organized in your college to enhance the skills of students?

"We conduct hands-on workshops on a regular basis for all departments"

We have organized a hands-on workshop on Robotics for UG students of ME, EEE, ECE and CSE branches. And through this workshop, they have executed 10 different real-world Robotic projects which is definitely helping them to boost their confidence and skills.

How do you prepare your students to cope with the competitive world?

"Through extra lectures, reading materials and adjusting my teaching as per industry standards"

I always try to teach the subject to our students as per competitive standards. Additionally, I take extra classes and provide the required reading materials and video lectures to them so that they can match pace with this competitive world and can stand apart from the crowd.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education and placement?

"We offer counseling sessions, training programs, internships and mock interviews"

I always motivate our students in the following ways, be it for placement or higher education.

  • Career counseling: Most of our students are uncertain about their goals. Hence, I counsel them about the contemporary industrial trends, placements, entrepreneurship and higher studies as and when required.
  • Workshop, Internship and Industrial visits: We conduct regular workshops, and professional visits and also offer various internship opportunities to our students to give them an overview of industry demands and how an industry works.
  • Mock interviews: To remove the interview fear we conduct regular mock interviews for our students. 
  • Training: Training programs for general aptitudes, logical reasoning and employability skills are also conducted for our students.

Which best practices are offered by your department to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

"First we assess then, then we use the approach of practical learning"

Assessing the background knowledge and basics of each student is what we generally follow before we start teaching them. Because this helps us to understand them better. Next, our department firmly believes that only delivering theory is not enough and students must be exposed to practical knowledge of subjects as much as possible via study models and pictures, etc. Lastly, we use summative assessments to frame meaningful performance goals for students. 

How do you bring in a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects?

"By including short video clips and models during classroom teaching"

I like to teach the subjects using hardware models, pictures, and short videos because it becomes easy for students to visualize the concept of those subjects. As a result, their understanding becomes stronger day by day.

How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"By being authentic, honest, trustworthy and supportive for them"

To have a healthy relationship with my students, I usually maintain a positive attitude during classroom teaching, incorporate humor as and when required, treat them with respect and teach the subjects with full enthusiasm and passion. Lastly, I offer extra support to students who struggle to have a better understanding of subjects. And if I talk about my colleagues, then with them I always try to have a trustworthy environment, listen to them with full attention, celebrate happy moments with them, never think twice before clarifying any doubt and offer my help and support whenever required. Because I believe that in any relationship either professional or personal a healthy boundary must be maintained. Hence I try to be real and straightforward with them. 

Any valuable advice would you like to give to students to have a prosperous career ahead?

"Stay focused toward your goals and invest your full efforts to fulfill them"

I would advise my students to be fully dedicated and focused on their goal and to give 100% of their effort to achieve it.
