Mr. Raj Kumar Mistry is the Head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at RTC Institute of Technology. He was born in Dhanwar, India in 1983. He received the B.Tech degree in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering from Berhampur in 2008, and the M.Tech in VLSI Design and Embedded System from Jamshedpur in 2013. He is currently pursuing Ph.D in Antenna Design from IIT Ranchi. His research interests include microwave and millimeter-wave antenna, Microchip programming and Embedded System. He has written more than 20 papers in various journals.

What are your roles and responsibilities?

"To provide abundant opportunities to our students to learn and grow"

I believe our students and youths have enormous opportunities to build the nation, because their brain is like clay, and we can mold them into great personality by imparting good knowledge and values. So being the HOD, I always try to inculcate their curiosity to learn and apply things for future innovation and solving society's problems. And when it comes to faculty, I usually motivate them to work as a team for students, college and their own growth.


How do you build healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"By mentoring and talking to them on regular basis"

To have a cordial relationship with my students and fellow faculty, I always try to inculcate their curiosity to learn and apply things for future innovation and solving nation or society problems. I usually motivate our faculty to work as a team to ensure excellence in the education that we offer to our students. Apart from this, I am also open to new suggestions from their end and communicate them regularly.


How do you put in place a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects?

"We have the latest laboratories where we perform experiments and conduct research"

We have eight separate laboratories in our department and all of them cover the complete academic curriculum for the ECE branch. We are also having one separate project and simulation lab where we focus on the practical implementation of new topics in the field of PCB design, VLSI design, Antenna Design and Embedded system design. This is how we train our students according to industry needs.


Which prime practices are offered by the department to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

"Proficiency classes, seminars and personality development training are given to them"

To develop their skills, we have added general proficiency classes in our routine, where we teach them about communication skills, teamwork and interpersonal skills, etc. Additionally, we arrange seminars for them and frequently invite technical professionals from different renowned industries and educational institutions for technical talks.

How do you frame and refresh the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

"By placing our student's needs in centre"

We have framed our strategy in such a way that it will build confidence in our students to survive in any walk of their life. In a four-year curriculum, students get the best knowledge from our faculty and this knowledge enables them to solve real-world issues.


What are your views on the placements of students from your department?

"We offer the best placement training, hence most of our students are placed in reputed firms"

Students of our ECE department get placed every year in renowned multinational companies. This year also, about 90% of students got placed this year and few have shown their interest in higher studies.


How do you support your students to cope with this competitive world?

"By providing them the required support for skills enhancement"

We rigorously work for our students' development and keep on upgrading them on new skills through our guidance, new programs, extracurricular activities and training programs, etc. 


What extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of students?

"We offer a wide variety of co-curricular activities via centre of excellence"

We are having various extracurricular activities for students. And in terms of technical advancement, we have a VLSI Excellence Centre on our campus where students acquire knowledge in the field of IC design.


What are the challenges you faced to uplift the education of your department?

"We have crossed many hurdles and now our department is growing"

I strongly believe that challenges will always be there and it is good to work in such an environment. Because challenges will define your capabilities, strengths and weaknesses as well. We all know that nothing is ideal in this universe, but it is the long-term evolutionary process to acquire better conditions is crucial and tough situation. We have gone through a long continuous development process and have crossed many hurdles, presently we are pioneering in the field of ECE.


How does the curriculum of your department assure the best practices of the industry?

"It includes the latest programs, training and offers an open environment for research"

Electronics and Communication Engineering is a branch that deals with the science of electrons and covers a wide range of applications like television, radio, computers and telecommunication, etc. which make our life easier and enjoyable. ECE is the backbone of the modern communication system which rules rocket science to telecommunication everything. Nowadays, we are unable to think about our daily life without the elements or devices connected with electronics and communication engineering. So, keeping all this in mind, we are trying to create our curriculum of the B. Tech program that can be link with the emerging technologies leading to Industry 4.0

Our Department has provided a collaborative and open learning environment for free exchange of ideas, where research, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship can flourish and students can achieve their full potential.

"Never underestimate your capabilities and stay dedicated towards your goals"

I would like to advise them to stay focused towards their goals and have faith in your knowledge and capabilities. Also never demoralise them and do not feel inferior while representing yourself. Build yourself in such a way that no one can defeat you except you.
