Dr. Jayasudha J. S is currently serving as the Principal at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram. She has 25 years of teaching experience as a Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at the institution. Also, she has received the Best Paper Award for presenting a paper in an international conference, and has organized many community development programmes, short term courses and conferences at global levels. Dr. Jayasudha has been recognized as an approved research guide in APJ Abdul Kalam Kerala Technological University.

Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering (SCTCE) coordinates Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral Programs, and explores the feasibility of various specializations in order to fulfil its mission. SCTCE is one among the few technical education institutions in the state of Kerala where four programmes got accreditation by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for the period 2019-2022. The College is maintaining consistent high academic performance and increasing the research activity. The quality graduates shall sustain and improve on the targeted long-term objectives by providing better visibility and outreach.


What do you think should be the institute’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“Increasing the interdisciplinary academic and research activities”

We adhere to address curriculum gaps and train students to become innovative and inventive in product development and design. We aspire to nurture student clubs and professional competition teams, and prepare students to participate in different competitions in the national and international arena. Providing the training to staff members in cutting edge technologies and encouraging them to take up research and consultancy works, and maintaining consistent high academic performance and research are our goals for the coming years. Also, development of a research and consultancy centre in the field of Engineering and Technology. 


How do you establish an industry-connect with the subjects taught?

“Coordinating best industrial practices and collaborations”

To develop a platform for academia and industry to interact, we innovate and co-create newer technologies, and modernize the existing laboratories and computing facilities. Partnering with industry leaders for product development and design by taking up joint projects through industry-institute participation which helps students learn in real environments and develop attributes. Short visit programmes and summer internships to premier institutes and research establishments/industries, twinning and resource sharing programmes with top ranking universities are taken up to ensure a better learning pedagogy.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the students are?

“Mentoring and guiding students for a successful life”

Working for the students as a sincere, dedicated, regular and punctual teacher is my primary concern. I look after the overall development of the students by getting involved in the teaching-learning process and mentoring the students. I take part in leadership roles for guiding the students and leading the students to live in the right path. 


What are some plans that you’re currently designing for students?

“Advanced training and professional alliance with industries”

We are looking forward to offering training programmes driven by industry-academic partners like Additional Skill Acquisition Programmes (ASAP) etc. Department-level units of profesional organizations like SAE, ASME, ISNT, IEEE, CSI, etc. will also be utilized for making students industry ready. Signing the MoUs with public sector undertakings and taking up joint projects through industry-institute participation, and setting up ultra-modern laboratories and computing facilities for students. 


What are the types of projects that the students work on?

“Research through a multi-disciplinary collective approach”

Students here work on research projects focusing on metal hydrides, hydrogen generation and dispensing units to cater to the automobile sector. Conducting high end research in the area of hydrogen power concentrating on metal hydride based hydrogen storage and use of metal hydrides as actuators - A combined research with leading organisations such as IIT Madras, with DST funding is already under progress. Development of bioreactors on fuel applications, Reclamation of spent/used automotive lubricant by selective purification process, collaborative work with industry on electric vehicles and high-efficiency fuel cells are the projects students are involved in.

How does SCTCE ensure students are being prepared for the future?

“Undertaking various developmental programs and regular evaluation”

The institution maintains consistent high academic performance, and invests and involves itself a lot in interdisciplinary research activities. Providing training, internships and proper guidance to students, and monitoring their academic performance is done on a regular basis.
