Mr. J. S. Bedi, Chairman, Gian Jyoti Group is a social entrepreneur and a renowned educationist. He pioneered the concept of “Quality in Education” in the Northern region for the first time in the early 70’s. People associate “Quality Education” with GianJyoti Group starting from Kindergarten to Doctoral level education. Mr. Bedi was instrumental in establishing Gian Jyoti Educational Society (GJES) in 1974. In 1998 Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology (GJIMT) was established under his vision. GJIMT is continuously ranked in Top B schools of the country and has 25 years of excellent legacy.
You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?
"It is through the next generation that I measure my success and that keeps the fire burning inside me and connects me with the education sector"
Throughout various positions that I have held in my time with education institutions, the potential of the next generation for our future and the vast growing world of knowledge keeps me connected to the education sector. As time passes, the Education sector keeps growing and keeps evolving where our children are becoming keen in various nuances in the world which inspires us at GJIMT to pursue this path and provide a better journey of education and learning.
Being the Chairman of GJIMT, what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?
"Lead by example. That is the motto I follow and also try to instil into the hearts of the young ones"
Focusing on long-term planning, using strategic approach while also analysing current performances to come up with better solutions every step of the way is what I try to look towards. With a hands-on approach to my insights as well as having faith in my team, I can develop frameworks that allow others to reach long-term goals.
Being the Chairman of College, how do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your College?
I focus on the following steps while strategizing for the marketing and administration of our institution
- Identify goals
- Prioritize
- Assess needs and required resources
- Brainstorm and refine ideas to build a strategy
- Implement a school marketing plan
- Assess success
The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institute/ university/ school?
"Our institution provides various different courses that challenge students to their limit allowing them to overcome their potential and strive for further beyond"
Through the various curriculum and platforms our institution provides, students will be able to develop advanced & flexible management skills, gain access to an extensive business network, be able to create numerous opportunities for their career while being able to fit in to their desired goals and specializations.
How does the curriculum of College ensure the best practice of industry?
The curriculum at GJIMT allows the students to understand the most recent and up to date insights of the respected industries with the help of various faculties with a number of experiences in their respective fields. Continuous discussions and up to date debates and interactions with experts from industries brings the best practices to the students. Industries regularly conduct workshops for students. By this, industries directly address the students and train them in the best practices followed in industries. These workshops fill the gap between the faculty offering and industry requirement, if at all any.
Any insights into how your college could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?
Having a campus with cultural diversity enriches the educational experience. Students have the chance to learn from people with different backgrounds and upbringings through culturally diverse classroom and social interactions, increasing innovation and collaboration. Students have everyday opportunities to interact with people from different backgrounds thanks to a diverse campus, which helps them learn to speak more effectively and frequently in novel ways.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the College and the students are?
"As a chairman of the institute, I have a number of responsibilities that require my attention"
From providing leadership, administrative functions, supervision of personnel and development to being a Liaison for the institution at various platforms. I also have to keep in mind the curriculum and academic planning of the institution as well as the facilities and budget management and not to forget, any student related functions to bring forth an environment to inspire the students to innovate and allow their potential to grow.
What do you think should be the College’s top priority over the next 10 years?
"The ability of all of our students to learn in a flexible, individualised style has been and will continue to be GJIMT's main goal"
Students will receive a learning experience based on their academic requirements, time limits, and interests. We shall continue to place a high priority on the students' learning in all spheres of their lives.
When you founded GJIMT, what was your vision for the College? Has it evolved over time, and how far along in implementing that vision are you?
"My vision for the institution has been to empower our students and the coming generation and give them the abilities and skills to fulfil their academic & professional passions in a diverse, welcoming and inclusive manner for all the students, faculty and staff"
As time passed by, the core of my vision remained the same, but evolutions happened allowing me to embrace the change in time and technology and imbue the creative innovations of the modern world into our institution and continue with the vision we have one step at a time.
What would you like people to know about your College they may not know?
GJIMT provides the students with a scholarship programme. GJIMT also focuses on a small pool of students every year allowing them to have much more in depth guidance from their mentors and faculties. With lower fees than other institutions, GJIMT can cater to all students irrespective of their background.
What do you see as College’s greatest strengths?

What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for GJIMT specifically?
The biggest challenges we see and observe include enrolment, quality of education, political interference, infrastructure and facilities and poor governance structure. These can be taken on headfirst by focusing on each challenge one step at a time and reminding ourselves that the students deserve the best of our capabilities and making sure to teach them the importance of learning and eventually inspiring them to do the same for the future generations to come.
Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
"Learn, Practice & Test. Take one step at a time and figure out what needs to be done"

We focus highly on building positive relationships through communication. Promoting class discussions and peer interactions, staying connected with students, coming up with projects students can get excited about while creating a sense of order and routine and imbuing them with discipline allows us to create an environment where everyone can be inspired to aspire, achieve & ascend.
